Well, there you find that there's a difference between "viable" and "good". It'll kill things but I always find it adding about 5-10 minutes to each kill. It's better in online if other people have really good gear that benefits more from a boost than from another person doing damage, but other than that, yeah it's a bit on the bad side.

There's a lot of synergy between the SA Arts so Strikers seems very appealing, but on their own, they seem rather lackluster.

I was actually really impressed when messing around with Frontier's caravan quests that you can actually see the proper landmass if you look around when in the airship "rest" missions.

It's pretty rough but you can see the connection between the world maps like >>125935106 and >>125935281 and the land you see below you.
In this case this is the view North where you can see the icy area as well as a bit of the Pokke mountain range.

You do start in the airship for Ravi, but you get a day or night version of this specific one as a rest period when doing the Caravan missions in Frontier, which are basically 3 to 9 hunts in a row.
These act as a little rest period where you get free max potions and rations to help you out if you're hunting from previous ones as well as a store to trade in points you gain over the course of the quests for items.
They were originally be a huge pain in the ass for me because I didn't know that all you had to do to complete this portion was turn in a map.

As funny as it seems, X's flagships aren't the issue, their movesets are perfect. The only stupid shit are the way Variant and Lagiacrus attack. Giant, lazy, AoE attacks. Simply thrown in so a proper hit can't be animated

At last. This game is so weirdly balanced. You don't actually feel powerful until you get to seven stars in Gathering Hall.
Your weapons still feel like Low Rank shit in 4-5 star. They begin to feel decent once you get to 6 star. But they don't feel powerful until you get to 7 star.
I could have sworn that back in MH4U, I felt empowered much more quickly than G3.

I spent 21 minutes fighting a fucking Ferocious Kecha Wacha on 6-star.
I must be missing something or doing something wrong. There must be a way to break him out of that state.

He was definitely the hardest part of that quest, Raizex being the easiest. It's the only time I've had to pay any real attention to where ferocious tumors are, since staying on the opposite side of whatever claw it was on saved a lot of healing. Taking a hammer to it was definitely a mistake.
So how do Heavy shots work? I've noticed there are a few skills that boost their damage

I think I found something, they do damage based on height it seems like? The damage is still absolutely awful, unless Heavy Up skill is like a 1.5 boost there is no way anyone could possibly use this shot type. I guess it makes sense. Because the first time I fought Rusty, it was in the icy polar field, and I drove him off about 15 minutes in.

Yeah that's how all repel quests work, but most of the monsters you can repel are easy enough to kill most people never experience this feature. Note this only applies to "slay or repel" quests and not just any quest with an elder dragon.

It was an old tactic online that one person gets an elder down to near death status, then host their quest so you can bully the monster to death in moments. Then the person hosting wouldn't save and simply reset to get that quest back.
Let everyone but the host rack up some fast kills and good grinding.

It's not a dps meter. Try it with a friend who does nothing except run around all game while kill the monster. He will still get some contribution.
Additionally, on gathering quests you will also get contribution even though you gather different amounts. It's probably a kind of rough guideline.

A friend and I just started fresh characters, and we went directly to the hunting hall and did the HR1 Great Jaggi quest with the starting armor and weapons, no upgrades, no food buff, no potions and got our asses kicked. It felt like we weren't doing any damage though we were breaking parts(the frill.)

What weapon are you using? Handicraft charms are overrated in my opinion, most of the time, you'll be crafting a honed blade, C+2 set in lategame. Few exceptions I can think of is if you're fighting teostra/rajang where weakness exploit outperforms AUL, or perhaps if you require HGE or other defensive skills, or if you're using star knight. But the requirement is different based on what weapon you're using.

Well when I fought him, it was a 25 minute fight with at least 15+ minutes of that spent desperately trying to swat him out of the air and failing or chase him down to wherever he'd just flown off too. He was just swirling around in the air constantly and changed areas at least 5 or 6 times.

Try to wean yourself off evasion+1. As an LS/DB user, it's really really really only useful against deviljho/molten tigrex (and against molten tiggy, you can make a set without HGE). It definitely helps but if you only need one or the other, you can make a generic honed blade/c+2/razor sharp set with the defensive skill of your choice. Also, with increased damage, you kill a monster earlier.
My recommendation for you would be to screw evasion +1, create a set to your liking with charm farming, then git gudder and learn to fight without evasion + 1.

I've been trying to get into gunning, but the shitty defense is such a huge turnoff. Phantasy Star's rangers can get similar defense as hunters and they don't break the game.
It's just something I've never really understood with this game. Like, I could understand if gunners did a lot more damage, but they don't. So, they should be able to spec for higher defense.

On the surface, yes, the motion values look quite similar. But those values don't account for setup cost. That is, the amount of time you need to be running around and dodging to set up good attacks. Melee generally needs to spend more time waiting for the right moment to attack. Gunners don't need to be so cautious because they can continue moving to a better position even as they're attacking. In the case of HBG, range is barely even an issue for them if using crouch fire correctly.

With me it's the opposite.
I typically only use the melee weapons and I don't have much issue finding openings to attack, especially with evasion and evade extender. I have a much harder time gunning, even with evasion. The monster is constantly in my face and it feels like I spend more time trying to stay in the critical range than attacking. Then there's all the maintenance and ammo. Just doesn't seem worth the effort.

To be quite honest though, MHO is just not polished enough as a game. Playing through the early levels, it's quite obvious that it's a step back from the latest MH titles. For example, the standard 2x90degree turns are still present, which makes exploiting the fuck out of them with the GS/hammer easy. Monster AI/hitboxes are pretty horrible. You could stand under the kutku in MHO and totally not get punished at all. There's this new otter/beaver-like monster that has a dig attack that doesn't even target you. There are two options, he either digs straight forward before emerging or he emerges straightaway. The joy of crafting various armour sets and weapons is restricted by extremely low money. Overall, not a very fulfilling MH experience.

But seriously though, many element weapons have really solid stat budgets compared to natural white pure raw ones, so unless you're using a weapon that doesn't care about element at all, Incinerating Dino armor + element weapons will often perform just as well or better.

My solution to this is basically sell nothing ever, then if I need a little bit of cash for something I'll sell a little of my carbide ore and if it's not close enough to reach with selling 1/3rd of my stack of that then I'll just go do hunts for a bit instead.
