You can make shields almost invisible with color changers; set their alpha as low as it goes and tweak the color so it blends in better.

I dunno, just try to place some big jets so they thrust through the center of mass on average and add smaller ones for maneuvering. I guess my propellers were pretty close to balanced already. Don't forget to assign reverse/roll modes for the maneuver thrusters where needed. The AI may fail to use the thrusters properly if it thinks it can do plane-like turns; you can block that via its turn threshold settings.

Summary
This week's update is giving more juice to the weapons and tools by making them stronger and more powerful. From now on tools and weapons are divided into tiers, each tier offers more efficient and better versions so you can get the work done quicker. We are introducing new variants of weapons offering an arsenal with diverse parameters such as rapid fire power and deadly precision. Every tier requires different resources to assemble. You will need to find rarer resources to make the higher tier variants. And on top of it you can mod the characteristic of tools.
Since the release of Planets we have been working on the performance of the game and we are planning to continue improving it to make the experience better for everyone.

So the aerial AI seems pretty stupid and can't keep any distance from the enemies, preferring to fly right over them. Or into them. Which this thing's armor layout was never meant for.

I got it to fly straight enough with some control blocks and naval AI instead. Now it does broadsides while flying pretty low in the air, still moving several times faster than the original watercraft.

Dunno why the naval AI is so retarded with throttle, though. On water it's reversing more than half the time unless you tell it not to, and now it's throttling down the jets. Maybe I can fix those with control blocks too.

Spengist question: Can you modify the speed at which the rotors/pistons lock? Has anyone tried?

If there was some way to initiate the lock voluntarily or to lower the speed threshold at which the lock happens it would make the lock much more useful. If it were lowered you could pilot ships more easily without fear of breaking and with a much slower decline in speed when that point comes. If it could be triggered the possibilities would be far reaching.


Oh, also, my mining vessel and only ship is busted. I have tons of uranium and my oxygen supply is fine, but I've got no refinery and the conveyor system is blown the fuck out.

Air floats even better and doesn't cost anything. You could try to seal the compartments and put water pumps in them.

Putting important things like the engine's root part under the waterline can also provide some protection. Projectiles can bounce off the water, and missiles may end up floating around harmlessly if they splash into the water some distance from the ship while trying to hit the (underwater) engine block.

Lasers may do slightly less damage through water too, but effective lasers tend to be insane overkill to guarantee block kills at a distance so dunno how much protection that is.

Then, make it fly using a custom jet. Keep it below 40k RP while you're at it.

So /egg/ i, as many of you I believe, was thinking about the possibility of reenacting starhip troopers' klendathu fights in the game but sadly the amount of ayys spawning at a time is just too low. So I began looking through the gane files for a way to increase the spawn rate of the spoders, unluckyly there's no simple parameter to edit or increase as the spider spawn event is not in the global events file nor anywhere else as far as I can tell. Then I began looking through the files in the github repository and it seems like there are files governing the spawn of neutral cargo ships which could be edited by script to make spiders spawn instead, maybe even spawn them when the players gets within a certain range of a ship or block.
Unfortunately I'm not enough of a codefag to figure out what to change exactly but maybe someone of you who's more experienced might give it a go.

The file to look at is probably MyNeutralShipSpawner.cs

I was actually getting the same idea myself. I haven't looked into SE modding, but assuming a mod thruster is limited to vanilla-like behavior and functions, there's the issue of getting it to fire when you want to fire it as a weapon and excluding it from being triggered by maneuvering controls.

Fuck no. Keen has done NOTHING but remove the <!-- / --> around the rifles and other items which have been in the code for weeks now. Making new weapons like they did there takes all of 5 minutes if all files are prepared.

They added a new weapons definition and copy/pasted the assault rifle with the new definition. Same for the tools. Slap some blueprints in there (also copy/paste), done. The lazy fucks.

Learned a bunch of lessons yesterday, especially on gun/turret design, water pumps and how missile>cannons but cannons are sweet as fuck. Gonna test it out the ship now.

Electric engines are useless unless you are in devtest, which has the new, overhauled engine system.

Basically they're batteries. They don't generate power, they only store it. Only time they seem useful is when making tiny drones. They can magically draw power from their mothership and take off fully charged. This avoids the extra weight and cost of an actual engine.

Also, all newbies get an obligatory package of autism, in .png form.

Depends on what application. If you want the batteries to power something that's only used for short periods like maneuvering thrusters, sure. I wouldn't recommend using them for things like shields or propulsion, because there's nothing worse than shields going down in the middle of a fight. That said, I haven't messed around with them until a few days ago, and even then was an updated version with some weird shit that definitely wasn't there before.

Short and simple: Use only these parts:
Engine, crankshaft, crankshaft extension, cylinder, fuel injector, exhaust, radiators. Radiators can come on the crankshaft too.

Missiles are only better than guns up to a point. Advanced cannons can be absurdly powerful and hyper accurate at extreme ranges and can snipe the AI core out of ships from kilometers away. Regular custom cannons are a bit poo compared to missiles particularly against shields.

3km/s muzzle velocity is by all means fast, but at 2km a slow boat can still travel several meters before such a projectile impacts.
That kind of cannons are nothing more than a poor man's laser.

AFAICT the thrusters aren't hurting the ship. IIRC the modular thrusters don't even cause thruster damage at all. Nor does the ship seem to take damage anywhere moving around when shields are off.

The ship itself has no clangy bits, and there's nothing nearby to collide with.

What gives?

Shields eat up power. Engines eat up power. It's either one or the otehr or more power. I don't know when we are going to be able to make separate power systems where things are not drawn from the "universal" power pool.
