Well they're the strongest, so they're the best in that regard. Morally there's a complete turnaround if you read all the terminals and listen to the holotapes and talk to the scientists and do the sidequests in the Institute, they're not nearly as evil as people think and mostly have just put their secrecy above the lives of wastelanders (who they already see as living horrible, miserable lives)- Which changes during the course of the quest when as director you announce the Institute's existence to the Commonwealth via DCR. So they're only slightly behind the Minutemen in that regard. Aesthetically sterile white with spirals and light strips and shit just looks really nice, Brotherhood has cooler outfits for its officers but you have to kill them to get those which you can do as Institute (and can also get Tinker Tom's headgear). And as far as the future goes, Minutemen could form the New Commonwealth Republic, but Institute is a somewhat shittier House option- BoS is playing the short game, Minutemen are playing the medium game, Institute is playing the long game and Railroad is off to the side, playing with their dicks. In the end, long(est)-term, the Institute is best for humankind.

Explosives man here, on early levels (sub 10-15) you might as well forget about boom booms because you'll end up without any 10 seconds into any fight. Later on you can toy with Rocket Launchers or getting as many throw explosives as possible.
