First for post your Twitter account so I can add you to the /agdg/ list
First, for progress.
I'm embarrassed to say how long it took to implement the basics of a Map class (including Tile class). At least now it's done properly. On the heap, no leaking, great performance and easy to edit.
So excited!>tfw game doesn't work on W.I.N.E., because unlike the last time I tried coding this same project, I'm doing it properly

Please no

>have a really grandiose idea for a game
>start thinking about how theres no way I'm going to do this
>actually think of a way to simplify it to it's basics
>have an idea that can actually be completed in less than a month
>mention the idea to anyone, explain how I plan to do it if asked, ask for ways to refine it
>they shit all over it every time and tell me to just make a walking simulator instead

Coding is like writing in anther language, except if you make even a single mistake some dude will kick you in the balls and likely won't even tell you what you did wrong. And you need to be able to write what he tells you to write, otherwise you can't get past him.
Art is just like draw picture, man. It takes practice and strong vision, that's all.
>>123953347
>likely won't even tell you what you did wrong
I hate when people say this shit. If your compiler isn't telling you what went wrong then you're using a shit compiler or doing something you deserve to get kicked in the balls for.
>>123953347
man from the past you should know times have changed

>>123953347
if you are not an artist best advice i can give you is simply take a blank page and start drawing, doesn't have to be impressive or symmetrical just do it to train your hand with strokes
after that pick an artstyle that isn't too difficult to mimic.
remember: it doesn't matter if ur art is shit, every drawing you make will be better than the last one

I'm paying like $10/year (though that's with a special sale from like 5 years back, haven't really looked around since then).
Uhh though maybe Amazon's webhosting might work? I know they have low metered fees if you're careful with which shit you turn on.
>>123954381
Yeah, snakes and hornets are the annoyance sort of enemies in this.
>>123954486
Definitely an improvement. That type of tile for the foreground will likely be there for the entire game I'm afraid. Backgrounds will change though.
>>123954636
Not him, but a VPS is exactly what you want for tasks like that, though hopefully you'd put it to better use. You can get one for like $3 dollars a month at the lowest tiers. What you wouldn't want is a dedicated server, since it'd be massive overkill and you're talking on the order of $100+ dollars a month.
Amazon is basically a pay-as-you-go cloud hosting service (very similar to a VPS, but tends to be more expensive), with a lot of other features tacked on. I'd be careful of going with them unless you know what you're doing, their payment plans are convoluted as balls.

I guess I already knew Clarent would be the popular one. The fact that Ari-chan got chased out of agdg is a dead give away.

The animation for standing back up needs some work, it doesn't look nearly as smooth as the animation for hunching over.
Kickass walk cycle overall, though. I love how each step feels like it's got weight to it instead of him just sliding over the ground.

update is the main loop function, I don't know why you wouldn't use that
fixedupdate is as you would expect a fixed timestep function, and lateupdate is for anything that must be processed last
you can use delta time, framerate dependent or fixed if you want, but if you use fixed you should interpolate the value in update if it's anything visual

There is no main loop in Unity, the way a person would be used to from other engines. Instead, you give each object a script, and that scripts Update() method is called automagically each frame.
I mean, when you used to write a main loop, you probably already had code like
foreach monster in monstersList
monster.update()
so now you just dont worry about calling the updates yourself, Unity does that from outside your scope

No it's more that I'm bored of rigid level design.
Let's say the character is a frog.
Possible locations are a swamp, a river or a cave.
Possible mates for the frog are a toad, a badger or a penguin.
Possible vehicles for the frog are a pogo stick, a skate board or a hot air balloon.
One event is marriage.
Once x criteria are met the event is triggered.
Now a scene needs to be created based on whether its in the swamp, with the badger and the pogostick without making variations of every possible scene. Any idea how I go about this in unity?

If i stick opposite movement direction in there, it rotates the ship to face exactly the opposite of the direction in which it is going, so player can use the main engine to break super fast. There's a few problems. Firstly most indie devs don't adhere to a strict size change like that. You see the chest is exactly 2x normal size, but it is also still aligned with the pixel grid. Indie games with mixels will stretch that chest to a weird resolution like 1.5x and the pixels will not be the same size as those around the chest and the chest will not align with the pixel grid. And if they wanted to shrink the sprite then the pixels would again be smaller than all the pixels around it and be off-grid. Both of these just look bad.
Also now-a-days we don't have a limit on how many sprites we can make for a game. It takes less than a minute to make a proper sprite for a larger chest. It's just lazy to scale it up like that.
Mixels aren't that bad as long as it still aligns with the pixel grid. The same with rixels too. If you rotate a sprite rotate it at the same resolution so that the pixels themselves don't rotate.
reminder that killing yourself is an option
My game will have a full orchestral soundtrack

Question here for anyone who has sold games or game-assets, music etc.
Does it ever just stop selling?
I know that it goes on a downward curve from the moment it starts selling, but after that curve, do people still buy it once every month, or is it just dead?

there is a certain combination of what you should be able to do with normals and actual topology, your mesh is good enough for initial topology if you will have good color texture it will probably cover some the nasty smooth shading errors
also with normals you can manually paint your own bolts,cracks (you can do that on diffuse too depend on what what is your final purpose)

People are sheep by choice, anon. Stop getting buttmad at media lies and instead learn how to lie yourself. Also, start being more selfish, but put a layer of BS on it. People literally screw things up when they act generously/selflessly, because things are designed that everyone acts selfishly. Its more predictable that way.
The ultimate secret to making money with vidya:

protip: if you use one of those refurb store watch sites you can snag a 2012 mac mini with a quad-core i7 CPU and upgradable ram for like $500
as of the latest xcode update you no longer need a developer account to test on iphones--you only need the dev account if you want to publish on the app store (and by then you should be able to afford the price of that)

Basically body possession but not as linear and rigid as the game design was in Geist for example. You can even see the items the person your possessing is carrying, which is cool cause it's kind of like treasure hunting almost if you're trying to find a specific material. addition:
i almost made all my music in a kinda "tantric" state. i had no ideas, no expectations, no dreams, no wishes. i just was present and expressed my life force/energy.
it's a state of free expression. there are no more thoughts, ideas, future thinking, concepts or whatever. it's just being myself in the moment.
you could say it like that: "if you really stop wanting to do something, you'll suddenly do it"
the mind/ego can't understand it. it's like the ego is actually oppressing this energy and creativity, yet makes you believe it's "causing it". you believe you "need your ideas and concepts", but in reality these ideas are actually destroying your productivity.
i'm german so i can't describe it better.
i learned it by observing myself but it's more widely known as self-realization, choiceless awareness, hindu, buddhistic, tantric or whatever they call it.

A program is free software if the program's users have the four essential freedoms:
The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).
The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

If you still want to do it yourself then read:

>>123988013
don't do stuff that doesn't have to do with the object's initialization in the constructor
why would you want to do it in the constructor yourself anyway?
int main(int argc, char* argv)
{
Game myGame;
auto errorCode = myGame.Init(argc, argv);
if(errorCode == 0) myGame.Run();
return errorCode;
}

well, you prepare your stuff, your "member variables", load things from disk, create a window, all that, needed for the actual simulation/rendering
