Werebeast. I remember it being something really unassuming so I set a meeting area on it so dwarves would come close and hopefully attack it. They did kill it in the end and I had no idea it could infect people. A short while later my whole fort had werebeasts popping out of the woodwork.

flooding. back in 40d, farming was broken and you had to figure out how to deal with floodgates and mechanisms from very early on. Also, died a whole lot from goblin attaks. It was actually much harder to learn the game before 0.30+, when farming was more complicated and there were no eggs

Last thread someone asked about making toggled engravings less of an eyekiller: >>123886908

That is why I always put the dark background around the + and the wall tiles.

You can do this yourself, the tiles with the black backgrounds at 50% opacity and the bottom right column tile. You use black because it doesn't show up on unengraved and it just makes engraved show up as a grey rather than eyekiller white.

I miss the cave creatures you'd see around natural fissures.

I once made a fortress across one of those chasms you'd get, it was adorable when my dwarves broke through one of the cavern walls, they started naming the bugbats flying around in there.

At least until one of them flew into someone's bedroom and started savaging him in his sleep, I guess it was pissed that it didn't get a name.

You don't have to embark right next to one, just near one, with no mountains/oceans in between. If you want two sizeable invasions per year until the end of time then yes, you do need to embark right next to one, but that makes sense

Is dragon occurance affected by proximity to a lair? Does it matter if im accross the map to one, or is there a radius in which it will vist? Also, it it more likely to come the closer i am or is it the same chance no matter how close/far I am?

it's really not that tough with the wiki. The hardest part is the UI, once you get the hang of that everything comes together pretty quick. It's also really fortunate that dfg is one of the only worthwhile generals on the site so you can come here and ask questions about stuff the wiki can't help with.

So I've been having fun with my new stupid Kisat Dur trick.

I did a version without the tree by having an unconscious foe and launching myself skyward then just landing on them... exploded once, gotta be careful with that. If they bleed out before you land it really hurts.

Then I was having fun powerbombing this group of goblins and a human that were skirmishing and ended up punching the human into a shallow pond.

A pond with a tree right beside it.

...so I climbed up and while he floundered in the water, I reached the top and let go.

I kinda feel bad for what happened next.

If you don't mind exploits, there's a really easy way to know exactly where the hellmaw is in the tube. Dwarven sonar:
From the build menu designate a 10x10 farm plot over the top of the tube. Don't actually place it (you shouldn't be able to anyway if you're doing it right).
Scrolling down through unrevealed z levels over the tube, every place where there are no floors will just say "Blocked".
When you reach a z-level that has a floor in any of the tiles that the farm plot is designated over, it will say "Blocked" AND "Need soil or mud."
That z-level is the top of the hollow portion of the tube. It, and every z-level below it, is unsafe to mine.

No? Then fuck off
>>
>>123941762
There is a really good method, but it assumes that you don't breach the eerie caverns on the first or second layer.

It's simple: you dig out the first layer, make a downward staircase onto the next layer, but before you start digging the next layer out, you cover the staircase with a hatch cover.

If you breach the eerie caverns, you can just wait for your miner to safely withdraw up the staircase, before locking the hatch covers. Building destroyers can't destroy locked hatch covers from below, meaning that the demons won't get through.

I always just used a bridge to wall off the lone miner I send down there as an ambassador to the demons
Usually you can safely mine the first ~10 layers of adamantite as they tend to be plugged so it works out

you could in theory dye cloth specifically so that your high quality clothiers will produce for the military, while the trainees can produce for the general population. this is done by specifying the color of the clothing in the military uniforms screen.
if you specify robes, the military will grab any robes. if you specify blue robes, only dimple-cup midnight blue dyed robes will be used.

Just from glancing over the first page, I see that the tutorial still uses d p for plant gathering, which is a basic mechanic that has changed. It has single tile trees as well. It also still has the carp meme.
I'm not gonna read the whole thing to document all of its obsolesence for you, or to point out the newer mechanics that aren't covered. I really shouldn't even have to make the argument in the first place, that an almost 7 year old tutorial is a poor introduction to the game for a new player. Not that anon, but "d-p" is still in the game, and it has its pros compared to the new "gathering zones". For example, if you live in a biome with dangerous weather, you might just want to ask your gatherers to pick a few plants and then get the fuck back inside, rather than spend all their time outside.

Single tile trees, while they yieald less wood, basically work the same as multi tile dittos. You didn't have to re-learn everything you knew about wood-cutting just because they were added.

You're right about the carp, though.

Standing by.
I don't think it will take long.
The only cases where it takes longer for a tileset to release is a) when you have a tileset that is used with changed raws and the raws changed. You'd have to manually update the raws to be compatible with your tileset.
With any diff tool, this doesn't take much time though.
And b) when new items are added you want to draw.
You still could release something that works fine with the new version in the meantime though.

For this release, I can't think of any items that will be added (instruments and books already exist), but the raws will probably contain changes.
Anyway, most tilesets and graphic packs will be released within a few days. And if the trend of recent releases is to be believed, dfhack, and the various lazy newb packs won't take as long as they used to either.

Personally, I'll download the release, Look at the changelog, diff the raws and init files, make necessary adjustments, upload it packed with CLA and wait for the first guy to tell what retarded mistake I made this time.
>>

DF is CPU and RAM speed limited. The wiki discusses it at length. You would want high single threaded performance CPU and high speed low latency ram. Or to make it simple, the newest processor possible.
>>
So, I'm having an issue keeping my workshops going over a third of the time. Should I have singular dwarves dedicated to jobs, that are single trade artisans, and just have a dwarves hauling class, which live in the Commie blocks, and wheel around boulders?
>>
>>123962759
Assuming you're talking about a general non-specialized, mature fortress:
In most cases you want at least one if not more dedicated dwarves for workshops. Usually several of the most used workshops - possibly with different skill levels allowed. So your legendary mason can make the good stuff you need, while some asshole makes all the blocks for constructions on a separate workshop.

As you want to maximize the time your legendary metalsmith is actually making god-tier weapons, you don't want him to waste time with useless shit like hauling those very weapons.

So yes absolutely, separate haulers.

Also, nobody wheels around boulders - you build temporary mason workshops close to the boulders instead.
If you need a lot of boulders all the time (for a big construction), start a dedicated quarry somewhere.
>>
>>123962759

Enable all labours on all dwarves and let them do what ever they want. Free job market will fix it.
>>
>>123963272
And in case it wasn't clear, here's an example:

2-3 legendary masons, doing nothing but masonry.
1-2 mason's workshops allowing only legendary masons
Those are for your important stuff.

1-4 shit masons depending on your needs, doing nothing but masonry
1-3 mason's workshops allowing only shit masons
That's for the stuff where quality doesn't matter.

Another mason's workshop right where your quarry, active excavation site or current mineshaft is. Make blocks on repeat.

I try to avoid being confused for the artists wherever possible, but no, I am absolutely not CLA. I love the shit out of what they do, and I made a big nonsquare version, but I wasn't the one who came up with it.

The only reason a tileset wouldn't work, is as: >>123960229 says, you use edited raws and they are changed. It is possible that this might be the case for some sets that have the instruments using a different tile, but the more ascii like the set is the faster it will be compatible. I'll be swapping in my Curses+1 and editing the init.txt right after the download finishes because they should just work immediately.

Probably we will be able to specify which graphics a bard uses as a profession, same with inn-keeper/tavern worker I guess.

Then I'll diff my own mod and make sure it all works right, if I don't just rebuild it step by step into the new version, which I was thinking of doing anyways.

My counters are saying 7 hours btw.

Naturally once I get it downloaded I'll be checking to see what retarded mistakes CLA made, if any.
