There's your challenge, fåm
Reposting in new thread
I added an indicator telling the player they need to do something to see more text.
I also did a lot of backend work
Future things to do is add a portait box that's optional and can automatically grab the right portrait given some variable (string name or id int) and a character name (to display under the portrait if I want)
From there I need to allow the chat box to flow into other events such as showing dialog options, or forcing the character to move, or anything else is a scripted event. This will probably be done by a simple delegate.
I'm thinking I could make a system of event objects that all have an entry point and an exit point and handle themselves properly. Then you can just drag different behaviours into each other to string them together.
>>123638317
>since Unity doesn't support terrain in 2D
Shit nigga. That's just an array of tiles.
>tfw don't own my own home to dev from
>tfw renting
i feel it
>>123638569
Buy a van.
you're welcome.
attempt 1 at making the second playable character, animations soon for both
it's supposed to be a robot
it's taken me far too long to get to this point
>>123638381
That sure would be a lot of effort for something no one participates in.
>>123638531
In a normal game yeah, in Unity you have to take that array and construct a sprite that you can render.
Currently I have it set to automatically create a bunch of prefabs.
That image is literally hundreds of objects. Each grass tile is an object. Each tree trunk is an object. Each tree leaf bush is an object. etc
That's something I need to work on since developing like that is impossible.
>>123638524
Why do the trees look like they move from the beginning to the end of this webm? am I going cray?
ive made too many video games using math like addition. We need to revolutionize mathematical functions to truly make a new video game. perhaps ``quantum physics`` will have the answer. . .
>>123638714
very close colors to the background. would look really nice on a dark background though
>>123638738
Every tree has a script that randomizes their size by 5%, their color between white (base) and a provided color I give them, and their depth for drawing. At the beginning, they haven't randomized yet. After they have which is why they change drawing depths as well.
>>123638719
>developing like that is impossible
Why?
Just make them children to another ge object and it will look a lot cleaner.
You could always just tile the age on a plane or quad.....
>>123638780
>built in native common core
Well it seems I've managed to offened everyone I care about once again
Why the fuck am I so good at that
>>123639008
Probably because you're the type of person who slaps down anime in random posts with no relation to what you or anyone else is saying.
crude inventory prototype
>>123639008
The power of anime...
>>123639061
Oh, sorry, what kind of can do you live in?
>>123638070

>>123639008
Don't worry about it.
Offense is taken not given.
>>123638660
vans aren't comfy
I did consider working towards a sailboat and finding some shitty sandbar island to squat on for vacationing. y'know, just kinda claiming it and building a primitive shack to chillaxe in.my actual work is near a canal too and it's flanked by parks with "shores" so in theory I could sail to work on a small enough vessel assuming I don't get arrested by the coast guard
>>123638812
this, I actually thought it was a dude who had the top of his head cut off from the thumbnail
>>123638937
This is what I'm doing right now
Currently I have a script that generates a bunch of sprites in a huge grid. Each of them has a script that I can set an Enum to. When I hit "Generate" on the main script, all those objects that have their Enum set are replaced with Prefabs. It's super cluttery and each prefab requires a ridiculous amount of time and takes a ridiculous amount of resources to handle by the game for what I want it to do
The solution is to generate one massive sprite, or smaller sprites out of a tilesheet.
There are paid solutions, but I want to try making a free one first.
>>123639073
Nice, pretty cool but not sure how you interact with the inventory
>>123639221
The mouse didn't show up when I recorded
>>123639265
The mouse is slow desu
If you want tryhards to play your game everything must be able to bind to a key
>>123639073
This looks aesthetic as fuck. hope you have some dark areas in the future
>>123639165
Why are you instantiating them all at runtime...?
If you really need to why not make an object pool and instantiate them all at start instead of when its running
too lazy to make actual model, so placeholder instead
it looks like a weird paper crane but idgaf
>>123639392
I'm not
I instantiate in the editor with my script
>>123638812
>>123639158
thanks, i'll see what i can do, but here's the sprite on a dark background to get a better look for now
not done with the pants
>>123639392
>If you really need to why not make an object pool and instantiate them all at start instead of when its running
Also that wouldn't really do anything
That's not how object pools are used
Object pools are for objects that are going to be destroyed and recreated often. If you need to create an object beyond the pools limit, it doesn't gain you any benefit. Pools only come in handy when you've destroyed previous objects and you want to create new ones.
>tfw hard captchas because too much posting
>>123639432
most use cubes, spheres or capsules
you're a fucking mad man
>>123639558
I feel like you would benefit if the dark accents on the white areas werre darker grey, but what do i know?
>>123639579
You can use an object pool for a scrolling map too
>>123639073
That's a pretty juicy inventory.
Will it pause the game when you access it, or will you need to be out of combat before messing with it?
>>123639432

you're going about this the wrong way baka
I picked up FL Studio today and made my first three songs. I'd imagine they're pretty babby-tier, and I know for a fact I have a lot more work to do on them, but I'm pretty proud of learning the software so quickly and cranking out a couple of pleasant-sounding songs.
Does anyone have some guides or lectures on musical theory and construction? I have a ton to learn on this sorta' thing.

btw I hope that thing isn't the character because that's way too small and terrible
>>123644661
About on par with my crap. For where you're at it's pretty decent.
Problem is making shit more complicated without getting assy. FL makes it really easy to make simple songs that sound decent enough... but then there's a wide gap between that and a solid track.
>>123644246
I'm really a sucker for nice red shades like that. Keep going.
Also, do players generally find very small playable characters annoying? I know that in RoR the sprites were around 10x10 or something, but it seems like hopoo got away with it well enough.
>>123644601
>varying colors
Create them in grayscale.
Now you have millions of colors desu.
>>123644817
Yeah, that's the problem - Even though I think they're pretty listenable, it's glaringly obvious they're made by an amateur behind a shitty synth program.
As I said, I need to start actually studying music and figuring out how to build something that sound professional.

>>123645524
This is absolutely the kind of motivation I wanted to see.
>>123645330
Just a bit of hot opinion here, but I think you should scale it relative to the character instead of the whole world, like in Fig 1. You don't need that much world information, but you need more character information. Also make your world space smaller, that seemingly simple room seems absolutely cavernous like that. When I said it was charming I meant with fig 2's sense of scale.
>>123644246

yeah, i haven't worked on indoor sizes yet, that's a test interior (also that repetitive texture is different now)

Learn about melody, what chords are, chord progressions, shit like that. Then move on to other stuff. Pick up an instrument. Even just 2-3 months of learning an instrument can yield great results to your own music. Learn some stuff before you even try to make music. Don't expect results fast.

I kind of like them, there's that dissonance and drone to them that fits your aesthetic.
>>123644661
>>123646293
I'd like to stress that I highly highly reccomend learning an instrument when starting out. When you do that not only do you learn the basics, but you also gain the intuition. I can't really explain that to you, but you learn how to improvise, recognize harmonies, and really you can kind of envision things better and won't feel really limited. I use to think that because I would be writing a lot of the songs on the computer, I wouldn't need to learn an instrument. So I cut my piano lessons after about 4 months. It's something I really regret to this day, but even that 4 months gave me the ability to harmonize the melodies in my head, gave me a sort of picture of how music overall is structured, and set the groundwork for me to delve even further into my knowledge.

Why aren't more amateur devs making pc board games/games with board game mechanics?
Advantages:
1. Quick and easy to code. Fast to prototype and fast to finish.
2. Art isn't even mandatory if your game is good, but still helps.
3. Gameplay is king. Imagination is your limit. You can go hog wild with the mechanics.

I can't figure out if I get productive because I clean my place or if I clean my place because I am already productive.
Either way, I'm on the path to making some progress.

runescape 2

Yeah let's do this. What are you working on?

>runescape 2
Not crisp enough. See image for comparison.

I am doing some modeling, rigging and animation to chart my abilities, and see if I can pull off what I have in store for the Winter Jam.

Is that Pepsiman's time machine or something?

What is bruised?
The tree or your hand?
Be more specific in your descriptions.
Horrible Game Simulator
Make a bunch of garbage and stick it into your game and sell it as a commentary on the state of the indie game industry. Rake in the ironic sales.
Why shouldn't I use Java for gamedev?
>>123651735
I don't like it.
>>123640431
To be quite honest none of that is particularly difficult or even much different from any other game.
The only thing that is really different is the high poly mesh but there are even AAA devs saying "Fuck it", only doing that for a tiny portion of their models.
Especially on consoles. That's the reason why anything besides the character models in CoD looks like complete ass.
>>123651735
why use Java when you can use Scala
>>123651728
>making games just for the cash
Disgusting.
>>123652241
>not finishing a game ever
gross
>>123652404
Who are you talking about?
>>123652451
(You)
where's ur game
hahahahahahahahahahaha
>>123652016
>That's the reason why anything besides the character models in CoD looks like complete ass.
there's also a shitload of asset recycling. The MP5 remained completely unchanged from its CoD4 iteration, except for the MP5k in Black Ops. The M4 never got a mesh update until after MW3.
I want to make a free game, but with a cosmetic shop like many games have these days. If you get on Steam does it have any payment integration for you to use? I know they'd take a cut of those sales.
>>123652680
actually I'm retarded, I guess you'd just sell it as "DLC" rather than have an in-game shop
>>123652680
Steamworks does have in-game purchasing apart from DLC, think the purchase of keys in CSGO/TF2.
dev status: cocoon
>>123652743
I'd wager the consumer is more likely to buy from an easily available in-game shop than from the Steam store.
clone a free game and sell it
>>123652840
top shelf
>>123652241
Dishonest devs have no integrity or shame, not sure what they're doing in an amateur gamedev thread.
>>123653016
hmm yes but what is someone with no game doing in an amateur game dev thread? mm
>>123652857
>1st year dropout design "advice"
Wuh-oh, looks like the Source Shitposter work up! Stop posting.
Is there a way to draw only part of a sprite in Unity that doesn't involve using a shader?
>>123653069
But I agree with that too, nodevs and dishonest devs should go and stay go.
>>123653150
buy an asset
post progress

I don't want to be a wageslave. Should I just kill myself?
>>123654150
how hard did you try
did you leave your house and tried to dev somewhere else in a laptop that had no video games or other distracting stuff installed?
have you tried devving with other people so you motivate yourselves to keep working?
have you tried participating in a jam?
