So, another Forays question. I'm at depth 12, furthest i've gotten. I was lucky enough to pick up too scrolls of enchantment. However, which should I pick to enhance? So far, I think the dagger is the best weapon in the game because in the dark it can totally ignore the combat stat. between the rest their uses is arguable. The sword seems good for high hit points and regenerates. Mace despite ignoring armor seems lackluster and the staff uses really comes in handy only when facing berserkers, zombies occasionally, and a boar. The bow just seems like trash.

The problem with CDDA ascii (and everything with CDDA really) is that it's a complete clusterfuck. The menus are inelegant, cluttered, and sometimes downright obtuse to use, the sidebar is a mess- though this is a tough one since the information it needs to convey is pretty all over the place.

Even after quitting it still upsets me when people post screens of it. Not that the tiles are any better.
>>
>>123377730
To be honest I like CDDA tiles, at least for their variety, I don't remeber the names, but there were some really nice out there.

Yeah, the narrow (default) sidebar is gross, and the only reason it exists (I assume) is because they had too much crap to fit otherwise.

Even the wide one is getting crowded now (and flat out missing things that couldn't fit).

I don't really see what you mean. The construction menu is pretty clunky, but that's just a singular menu, and the others seem fine to me. The sidebar has a lot of data squeezed into a small area, but the way it's displayed seems clear enough.
I mean, there are ASCII games that actually have bad interfaces. Like ADOM, with it's separate keystrokes for everything, including cleaning your ears. Or DF, with its dozens of menus. What does Cata do worse than those?

>>
>>123379841
It's not about ease of use.
It's about it looking like shit.

It stemmed from a question of why /rlg/ tends to dislike tiles.

CDDA ASCII is bad ASCII in a way comparable to ToME4 tiles being bad tiles.
>>
>>123365523
Tiles can be done well.

That said, I think there's often a neat prettiness that goes into the choices for ascii, and players who refuse to spend a few hours with the ascii don't expose themselves to enough of it to see that.

Also, tiles cannot be used in a terminal and thus displayed over termcast while ascii can. Termcasting is one of the ways I participate as a member of an online roguelike community.

Okay.
Well, I still don't see how Cata is exceptionally bad looking. Basically all the old classics look worse. Angband, Nethack, original Rogue.

I don't really think not looking like shit is a major selling point for ASCII games, anyway. If you want pretty graphics, you make actual graphics. What I expect from good text graphics is to be able to see what everything is at a glance.

I think you have a bad case of shit taste if you think Rogue or Nethack (in their updated versions) look worse than CataDDA. Especially Nethack. What the hell are you on about? Will agree that Angband ascii is pretty bad.

The point of the original post was that it's hard to do ASCII wrong- even rudimentary ascii looks fine, but tiles is so so easy to do wrong.

Can I get away with using this weapon in Poschengband, or is the AC penalty gonna be too much for me at this point in the game? Does it still retain the "gains hit and damage bonus on kills" property through that or does it just become a normal sword? Not sure how that works.
>>
>>123393084
Never did it, but I presume it loses that too since otherwise everyone would be saying to mundanity your rune sword.
>>
>>123392728
>rune swords
Those are a bit tricky. They start out as (-50, -50) and slowly increase if you're killing strong enough things and at deep enough depths. It's pretty quick to get it up to (+0, +0) by holding ctrl and a direction to farm worm masses, but it takes ages to get all the way up to (+50, +50)...most people give up well before then. As its plusses improve, it gains various brands and slays, and it always keeps the lifedrain.

You'll need plenty of strength and +damage items if you want to actually be able to damage things with it, and the sword itself actually needs to get the kill (in case of dual wield) to have a chance at getting another plus.

It's "permanently cursed" which means the only way to remove it is to read a ?Mundanity, which totally nukes the item and cannot be reversed. I'd recommend making sure you have one ?Mundanity to save in your house in case you decide to change your mind.

The AC penalty is pretty hefty, for sure, but the lifedrain helps a lot.

Fully stacked runeswords are sweet but really not worth the time. However, if you have ?Mundanity you may as well give it a shot. There are very few permanently cursed items worth using that you would also want to remove ever (in an equipment reshuffle say), so you'll likely find another ?Mundanity before reaching that point if you ever do.
>>
>>123393084
Mundanity causes an item to lose EVERYTHING. In this case, the weapon would become a 0d0 weapon with no abilities.

>>123393221
further clarification, beyond getting to +0 +0 the depth or strength of thing you have to kill in order to have a CHANCE at getting another increase is based on the monster's strength and the depth, plus IIRC uniques always give a chance.

So you can freely worm farm it up to 0,0 but after that you have to start killing real things. And getting from +49 to +50 is a lot harder than +0 to +1.

I'd say menu structure has very little to do with anything BUT ease of use. Visually, it's just text. Like, not even characters representing objects, but actual text you read. How do you even judge that?

And yeah, I think Nethack looks kind of shit. Look at this picture here. Is this honestly your idea of PRETTY? It doesn't even bother with box-drawing characters for the walls, it just uses lines, so the corners don't even tesselate. And the positive-space corridors are garish. The graphics serve their function, but I would absolutely not use this as an example of good visual design.

I pretty much agree with your assessment of tiles vs. ASCII, though.

Charm is acceptable too.
ID is usually best left for staves and wands, to know the exact amount of charges they have at the time, other items id or semi-id after a period of time. It can be useful for other things (rings because they take a long ass time to ID, armor when you're trying to choose or know a runic) but wait on it. ID scrolls are very rare, by the way.
About potions, just quaff them, near water is a good idea most of the time. Hopefully one of them is detect magic. IDing in an unexplored level can be beneficial (because of said pot) but be careful.

You know how in Crawl you can press 5 to rest and heal?
You can do that in Brogue with Z. Never ever do it.

>>123394968
Yeah, once you have a jack put in at least 4 redundant banded cart wheels inside of the quarterpanels/boards. You crunch more loot but it keeps you going in a pinch long as you have the acceleration

Thanks. I died as a result of wading passed some eels and quaffing creeping death before I had a chance to recover some HP. I was relying on those blood plants for HP regen since I've heard so much about how brogue will starve you to death if you wait around. I managed to ID detect magic, I assume red means nonmagic, blue means magic? How does this work for potions?
>>
>>123395627
Hit D
>>
>>123395627
Red = bad, Blue = good
>>
>>123395627
In potions, red means harmful to you, blue means good.
In items, red is cursed (negative enchantment, possibly a cursed runic) blue is blessed (the oppossite: positive enchantment and possibly a good runic). Something that was on the level/your pack when !DMagic was used and doesn't get blue/red will be ID'd as +0.
For staves and wands, since they can't be used directly on yoursefl, red means bad when used on enemies (and good when used on allies, be mindful of that) blue means good when used on enemies (tele is still good on allies).

Use the Discoveries screen for a bit more info.

Yes, hitting more than one thing will give you more chances to activate the runic.

Probably? It will tell you the chance of activation once you kill enough stuff with it.

Stock up on cotton balls from disassembling pillows. If you have the first aid book to read to first aid 3 you get a decent amount of hp back per ball and in a pinch you can slam booze to drop your pain. I love me a hip flask/small plastic bottle of cheap whine.

I'm pretty sure you just have to kill everything up to that point, be on nightmare difficulty and...
And...
Take no damage on the level
Take heart, heathen! If you do take damage then you still get the Spear of Longinus!
Of course, considering you're flying blind, it's probably fucked already. And the level doesn't allow ranged weapons at all.
(Don't tell the demons that)

Take a looooooong, hard look at volumes and your priorities. It's practically harmless to carry an ample amount of medicines. 20 cotton balls is only 10 volume and with 3 first aid should get you a good 80 health back.A tin can lets you boil water immediately. A few long strings lets you craft stone pots, shovels, axes, adze's, and a camp fire drill without fuss.No doubt you've had more than a few plastic bottles, you can empty all that cough syrup into a bathtub, make a note, then make a few makeshift funnels and keep 3ish.If you ever get run off, it's easy to make a cap fire drill for fire, you can forage up some food and containers, setup some funnels near a dense stand of trees then get down to making spiked pits. If you can pick off some zombies for leather for waterskins and leather funnels it's even better. It's not to hard to have a crash kit still with the ~50 enc you'll have at 10 or less torso enc so you can survive indefinitely in a medium sized forest. Although, it is preferred you make caches of a little permafood, funnels, water, and spare tools as you can.

Here's the 100% kills, damageless UC video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eLeQzxSLlY

From searching I have done, I think that total damage taken may play a part in the spawning, as well as having a fairly high kill rate.

>Draconian shifter and Lom Lobon appear the moment stairs come in sight
>Passage of Globuria to stairs
>Draconian shifter blinks Lom Lobon and 8 draconians around me
>Use Apocalypse in hopes of stunning Lom Lobon
>He only gets slowed
>He casts Tornado
>Blink desperately and cast tele
>Down to 4HP while poisoned
>End up near stairs with Lom Lobon nearby
>Manage to blink and Passage of Globuria to stairs and climb up without him following me
>Spam Apocalypse all the way to D:1

I'm feeling like creating a roguelike but I don't want to poop out a dungeon crawl or another 7 day roguelike.

I'm thinking a project I can get super into for a few months with a wide scope and then release the source before abandoning it because I'm too much of a bitch to finish things so some other sap can pick it up and do the rest for me.

So it'll probably be a rogue-ish. Ala cata.

Someone talking shit about a western roguelike with comfy aspects and bionic horses resonated with me so lets take a bit and worldbuild.
Lets start with some mechanics.

>Open world.
>Randomly generated settlements, cities and towns.
>Rideable horses and somewhat indepth gunplay.

I'll take time and work on a gunplay system.

Maybe things like trick shots and all that but I'm not sure how I'll make melee worth a shit.

I want to go full autist and maybe have special moves and things to manage to help you shoot things, a possible action point system and the ability to learn and improve moves.

Things like shooting from horseback, diving to evade getting shot while shooting, shooting from cover, preforming trickshots to disarm.

Quickdrawing.

Give me some more cool things.

And just overload me with things that I probably won't impliment.

Settings, mechanics.
The works.

I want it to be a bit fantasy-western setting.

Possibly western themed apocalyptic but that seems a it overdone, not bad just not sure how I'd spin it.

>You know in advance roughly how many enchantment scrolls will spawn per playthrough,
No you don't. Like the rest of the loot, it's random.

>but choosing when and on what to use them is not easy.
Yes it is. Use them on your aux items immediately. If you're coming up on post Lair:8 to early midgame branches, maybe save one to create a *DA if you haven't found something comparable yet.

Character advantage in Crawl is worth the most at the earliest points of the game, and decreases from there. Always use your available resources at the earliest possible chance. Hanging onto them only makes your character weaker during the hardest part of the game.

It's not truly random. Brogue always tries to generate roughly the same number per seed. I don't remember what the sweet spot that it likes is, but it's a very weighted random.

Wow I'm retarded and thought that was a DCSS console screenshot without opening it. Ignore everything in >>123427940

Some aren't automatic and are just a weapons platform.. the ones that are, you turn on at the vehicle controls.
>>
>>123428208
to be fair, the brogue player started his post with the word "DCSS" because he's identifying himself as a DCSS-babby branching out into brogue

I think it was roughly 11-16 by d:26. Food, strength, life, and enchantment are rationed out to meet a bare minimum quality of seed but also to avoid getting stuff like 30 ench scrolls cause >RNG >random

you could always try steampunk. Or just copy The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

>more cool things
cattle rustling. Train robberies. Dynamite. The ability to wear steel plate under a poncho to stop bullets. The ability to wear a poncho. Treasure maps.

>I'm not sure how I'll make melee worth a shit.
Fistfights increase base statistics. This incentivizes melee combat. Problem is, most enemies won't ever let you get close enough to punch them. Melee has a disarm/steal weapon attack.

Look at the game Hard West. It has some cool concepts like ricocheting bullets off certain surfaces, being able to attack enemies if you see their shadow, and a luck meter.

Only if its based solely on fallout 1 and 2.
