I started fast traveling almost exclusively when I got bored of the commonwealth. I knew there was nothing to see because I already had decked out gear, a decent legendary, and 60+ stimpaks. I had no reason to explore any where. I just now when to the museum of witchcraft, already knowing what happens there because of /fog/. I just don't care about exploration, really. I care about interesting quests that get shit done, or new guns, or mods, etc. Not "generic raider drug den #5000"
It gets old and boring really fast when they drop more stimpaks, more bullets, and I don't need more of either. It's just for wasting time, really. Some places are fun, yes, but there's a lot of bullshit in the commonwealth that I don't care about.
It took me 30 hours to complete the game, and I did a lot of side quests, I just didn't put a lot of effort into exploration since I already had so much shit. The second I got the cryolator I threw it in the trash and never used it again, the second I got Old Faithful and 400 damage per hit I stopped caring about going to the shitty, dumpy little buildings with no quests and more drugs. Who cares?

And through enculturation which happens to everyone as a child, humans can also have their personalities "programmed" as well.
In game, it's more the Institute that is fueling the fear of synths than the synths themselves.
