For those in places like stadium or the official forums, it's because they grew up with Sonic as opposed to Mario or were attracted to Sonic's sick tude over Mario's colorful adventures.
Anyone with a brain knows Mario as a whole is better than Sonic and Mario tends to do things right more often than Sonic.

I don't like to speak for other people but it also seems pretty well known that when Sonic does do something well, it usually turns out better than something Mario does right, as in it's more of an explosive success. Play literally any of the RPGs and you will be driven into the ground with how wrong you are. The mainline games still have their charm but they know their place and do not let things like that have any chance of interfering with gameplay.
