If you won't be needing the speed boost/shield/twin shadows then go item slot efficient with the combo.
If the game is looking to be a snowball stomp then I prefer go the old style since I won't be missing that slot by the time the game ends.

eh what you say isn't exactly true, playing like a pussy means you aren't doing your job unless your AD wants you to be safe
supports are pretty dynamic in botlane and affect the flow of the lane, they're also responsible for early trades being won or lost because their damage is significant at the time
they work with more limited gold flow than any other role unless you have a jungler that is getting royally fucked so they have to make item purchases count during tight games, though in stomps they're free to kinda buy whatever and it works
there's actual intricacies to playing support, much like any lane, but it's really easy to dumb down the role, in much the same way you can dumb down any role
overall i'd rate support as an easy lane to pick up, but generally speaking a rather difficult one to get really good at, especially since you have to rely on a lane partner and learning to make do with bad AD's comes with the territory
