>I tested it a few times just in case the sun was secretly helping but it was completely pitch black dark and the solar panels had 100% red on them. I turned on my flashlight, and stared at my solar panels just in case the flashlight alone worked like the sun and that didn't work. I sat down, they powered on, and started charging my batteries. At ~200kW with 8 solar panels it's no way to power a station forever but it did charge my batteries through the night.
Should we build an array of spotlights pointed at solarpanels in a really brightroom in our ships to have an unending power source?

So this ugly piece of shit made orbit with 87% of the tank remaining. I only topped it off to 95% and wasted a bit because I was flying while tabbed out and went off course.

Besides the pieces it's composed of, it's carrying all the components for an assembler and refinery onboard. Current mass is 69,150 kg so it can probably take a fuck load more cargo up in one launch.

This is probably as cheap as you can possibly go for a large ship heavy lifter. I need to be some experimenting to see what a small ship is capable of getting up. I'm not even concerned with landing this thing at the moment. I just want to figure out the fastest possible route for pushing into space.

Someone on r/spaceengineers made a chart of gravity vs. altitude for the earth planet: https://www.reddit.com/r/spaceengineers/comments/3szwxa/atmosphere_and_gravity_data_for_earth_very_basic/

I got Wolfram Alpha to fit various types of curves to those numbers and got a decent looking inverse square fit:
g = -0.085859 + 376.826 / (x + 12.3596)^2
g is gravity in Gs (between 0 and 1); x is altitude in km

Then I put the new formula into my simulation program to get a new curve of required acceleration/initial velocity to escape the planet's gravity.

V = 0 -> A = 9.81
V = 100 -> A = 9.05
V = 250 -> A = 6.04
V = 350 -> A = 3.76
V = 500 -> A = 0.94
V = 572.79 -> A = 0 (escape velocity)

>payload on top of a fuel tank on top of a thruster
That's the classic rocket. Kind of makes me wish there was some excuse to make it multistage.
Maybe if you carried less fuel? A detachable first stage containing hydrogen tanks and thrusters, that you detach near the upper edge of the gravity bubble and continue on with ions.
Maybe you could use those wings from that mod to make a controlled landing without the thruster.
>>
>>122484092
Detaching the hydrogen stuff would shed a load of weight so atmospheric re-entry should be safer.
>>
>>122483307
Less than I expected. I guess the weak but infinite-range gravity we have counts for a lot.

Yeah, but you'll have to do it without the hydrogen stuff. And if you can safely land with the ion thrusters, you could have taken off with them.
What we need is atmospheric drag.

Anon with the rocket in question here.
At the moment I'm designing based on the assumption this will be the first lifter built on a planet start which means no platinum so no thruster components so no ion thrusters.

I want to try and get all the materials I need to boot strap mining, refining, and assembly in space in the cheapest, most efficiency, and fastest way possible.

The fact that this thing can land is useful. That means it's reusable. Otherwise I was considering it could be canabalized to build other things. I'd like to avoid staging since it looks like the with space engineers mechanics staging is incredibly wasteful.

Adding on:
The entire hydrogen thruster assembly (4x small, 1x large, 1x tank) only weighs 6501.6 kg or about 9.4% of the total mass of the rocket on liftoff. Ion thrusters are heavy as fuck in comparison. A large ship large thurster is 39400 kg. One thruster is more than the entire assembly! Need to get some numbers on atmos thrusters.

Young trees grow fast
Trees trap carbon in their trunks

Cutting down trees and planting new ones is GOOD for environment as long as there's always both old and young forest to create biological diversity.

Blanets is hard. I've wrekt all three of my small craft (a rover, a scout ship and a miner) but on the upside my mate discovered a source of uranium nearby. Currently I'm contemplating building a heavy lifter and doing manual mining until I have the resources to launch a rocket into spess with a refinery/assembler in cargo.

Once I've got a mining operation in spess going I'll make a platform in orbit and airdrop cargo containers (with antennae) to the ground base.

So I finally got the prototype of my large lander/mothership working.

I was going to use a mix of all three thrusters type and have VTOL but that prototype pancaked so hard most of it disintegrated.

If you use atmosphere thrusters on a large ship, make sure that its an airship meant for on planet use only.
Otherwise that shit is dead weight.

Anyway, my main concern right now is I haven't finished the aesthetics, interior and other key systems, so I'm wondering how fucking heavy its going to get.

It's sitting at around 4.8 mil mass right now.

It's got 16 large hydrogen thrusters, 8 facing down and four facing forward and back.

And then 48 small direction hydrogen thrusters with 12 pointing on both side, and 12 also pointing downward as well as up.

It has right now 8 hydrogen tanks in total, I'm worried if it has enough fuel to last more then one reentry and escape because from what my friend told me filling up even a single tank is really god damn time consuming.

Me and a buddy are probably going to fork the design at this point into two sister ships, one that is a mobile fuel hauler/mothership and one that can carry a ton of landing HABS to throw a ground base together really fast.

Think several pods that we remote control to the ground and then assemble into a surface base.

Do you guys think with the added mass of finished platting, rooms, systems and the full cargo containers it cans till fly?

And will it it have enough fuel?

Rainforest is good.
However, it's true you can't just yell at the people in poor countries to stop cutting it down. Selling the wood and using the land for farming is necessary with human expansion.

So, you see, the hippies are looking at it the wrong way.
We need to design a machine designs for chopping humans down instead of trees to quell the human population.
Get to it engineers, chop-chop.

I haven't yet worked with hydrogen in survival, how long does it take to fill up a single tank? (let alone 8)

Make a new game in creative with a single blaned.

Two ways:
1. In Creative strap on a ton of oxygen generators, they'll produce free hydrogen and fill all your tanks. Remove them then swap to Survival.

2. In Survival turn on Space Master and strap on a bunch of oxygen generators, spawn in ice with F10, micromanage the ice piles because space master is a shitty creative experience, remove them, then take off.

SS13 runs on a shitty garbage engine choking on its own piss. Even great servers lag to oblivion and it's impossible to actually communicate and do shit in that. I've tried that game so many times and just given up every time, sometimes after fucking days of desperately wanting to enjoy it

>>
>>122497886
BYOND is great for small 2D multiplayer games. SS13 runs like complete and utter horseshit because it's decompiled code, that was never very good in the first place, and managed by a bunch of super ammeters.

I worked on cleaning up SS13 when it was decompiled. It was a fucking nightmare of just awful awful awful code. It still is. I know someone who contributes to try and learn how to code and the snippets he always asks me for help with are so bad I usually suggest tossing the entire piece and starting from scratch.

I haven't played it in years because I really dislike the direction it took when goonstation became the most popular branch. Except for Hobnob and a few others who played before it became popular on SA the goons are a bunch of fucking annoying dipshits.

beltloaders, you autistic retard. They have significantly higher fire rate. If you have enough ammo intakes, the reload will give you a much much higher DPS. If you're using 1m shells then using autoloaders is fucking stupid.

Is impossible to create some form of economy within Space Engineers through modding? (realizing you can and probably should reevaluate how certain ores may spawn, or adjust what/how many parts are required for specific objects, or if certain parts can only be acquired through other objectives that are not limitless mining, etc.)

There's actually been a lot of progress when it comes to performance in the last year. Not only did the /tg/station guys put up newer and beefier servers, but there also was a breakthrough in BYOND coding when it comes to deletion/garbage collection.
Played a lot last week and the server held up just fine, as long as lord singuloth didn't eat the station.

If we don't truly need the planet, what possible significance could those mineral resources have?

>>122496564
The thing to remember about the mass distribution of the universe is that all the matter is planets, and asteroids are insignificant motes of dust next to them.
Well, actually all the matter is stars, and planets are insignificant motes of dust next to them, but we won't be able to mine stars for some time yet. And let's not go into dark matter.
Point is, if you can't find a natural resource on a planet, you sure as hell won't find it in deep space. At least not in high enough quantities to justify the cost of getting it. Space travel is seriously fucking expensive.

We're stuck on this planet for the foreseeable future. We'll obviously be needing materials and energy for that whole future, so leaving those trees alone indefinitely isn't much of an option, but we'll still need to learn to manage the biosphere or it's going to break. Right now, humans aren't managing the biosphere very well at all. Cutting down the rainforests isn't some kind of calculated move. They're getting cut down by whoever has the money to cut them, to make some more money. Lumber isn't necessarily more valuable than the intact rainforest could be, it's just easier to sell.

It's a question of value now versus value later.
99% of the time, investors bitch about not getting value now regardless of what waiting could provide. It's also fairly common for the time value of money to make cashing in now more profitable in the intermediate run.

And of course, few companies are concerned with the real long term, since the people there expect to be gone by then.

After playing with planets for a while, I think they're actually okay.
Finicky as hell, and definitely not worth the wait, but they still add something to the game. Those big gravitational fields are a new environment to build ships in, and that's important in a game like this. To have different kinds of engineering challenges.
Maybe it wasn't a terrible idea to put them in.

Notice how in my original post I said that the extra loaders make it impractical. I did the math on this and did find out that although there is no benefit to one to four to one (one feeder, 4 clips, one autoloader) there is no immediate loss either, initially capable of the same rate as one to one to one.

HOWEVER, if we take into account ammo loss over sustained firing, once the clip is empty one to four to four outperforms one to one to one by having an extra third of the fire rate.

>>122504317
Yes. Infact, to prove it, I've just done the numbers. Here a 0.50 HE round is used, std reload 22 seconds, restock every 44.

using your one to one to one loader, fire rate per block is initially 0.015042 per block. This declines to 0.007 per block at 16 autoloaders.

Your clip will eventually run dry and your one single feeder per loader will be all thats left feeding ammo at a pathetic one shell per 44 seconds, giving a fire rate of 0.007524 per second per block. Given you're using a single clip this will be your fire rate very quickly.

The best 0.50 HE beltloader configuration is to have 3 feeders on 1 clip, meaning every restock cycle, the clip is completely reloaded.

Looking up the beltloader bonus I found an advanced cannon calculator where it was taken that the belt bonus is 0.2. Testing this it seems correct, if not maybe slightly faster.

for up to 123 beltloaders the time to empty is less than time to restock.

Interestingly, the restock time is a persistent, independant clock in FTD. So if firing is started immediately after a restock, the clock on the next restock is ALREADY TICKING WHILE FIRING. so the sustained fire rate is limited by the restock rate only. Up until a retarded amount of beltloaders, the sustained fire rate INCLUDING restock per block, is always 0.013544.

So by this test, if you are going to use a 1m configuration, always use beltloaders.

Source for the 0.20 factor used in beltloaders
www red dit com /r/FromTheDepths/comments/3sig0e/protip_request_beltfed_autoloaders/

which I tested some of my cannons using my own table and this factor, which gave the correct amount of time per loader to empty the clip from restock.

Here's my table for fiddling with which also includes the one to one to one, one to four to four and one to four to one comparisons.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/m2ll318j9pi60m5/ftd_why_autoloaders_suck.xls

which if it were not for configuration issues (which I previously stated) it could be argued that the one to four to one is slightly better than one to one to one, as the fire rate is initially equal to one to one to one, and the capacity is higher so although rate will decline once one clip empties, by comparison the one to one to one will be stuck with the rate of restock once the single clip is empty. However, as stated, making a decent configuration for a stack of crosses is pretty crappy. And as shown previously, a waste of time for 1m shells, use a beltloader.

>>122513827
From Wikipedia:
>Cyanobacteria, also known as Cyanophyta, is a phylum of bacteria that obtain their energy through photosynthesis. The name "cyanobacteria" comes from the color of the bacteria (Greek: kυανός (kyanós) = blue). They are often called blue-green algae (but some consider that name a misnomer, as cyanobacteria are prokaryotic and algae should be eukaryotic, although other definitions of algae encompass prokaryotic organisms)

Basically, when they were originally defined the naming species and known related species were blue, but they come in many colors and some don't even photosynthesize.

Bravo. Better than any NASA landings we've had on other celestial bodies in the last decade.

Warbros Server here, copying from least ded.

Current server status: Up, but occasionally shaky.

To join up with us when planets, there's some prep work to be done. First of all, you need to get into the group. To do so, message Ced23Ric on Steam. This guy: http://steamcommunity.com/id/ced23ric

Also, to save yourself some loadtime, preload our mods.
You can subscribe the to collection here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=375603526
There is a preload world (offline, creative) which you should start once to prod all mods to download: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=529237944
You can also use that for offline building, blueprinting and then building on the serbian later. I don't care if you want this server to be vanila, it won't be. It's a shitload of mods, but they have been weighted and tested and they work. Half of them are tweaks and visual shit (no beacon glare, for example) anyway.

You will be invited to a group called "Warbros Space Engineers". That group works as a whitelist. Only people in that group will be able to join the server. That is so I can control better who has access and we don't get unwashed pubbies.

Quick rule overview:
- Don't be a dick.
- No megalomanic superbuilds, use offine creative for that.
- No grid spam, every ship/thing you build is a calculated physics object that eats performance. So, no drone swarms, eh?
- PvP is opt-in between two (or more) consenting parties. No ifs, no butts.
- Only one drill per player. Take the Large Ship Earthbreaker, it's a good drill. Why? Drilling kills the game for everyone. Simu speed drops like a white city girl taking a moonshine shot down South.
- Talk to me if you have issues. Don't just shitpost on /egg/, talk to me. I'll see what I can do.

1/2

>>122530094
It's not because of circlejerking, but because of pubbies. I don't want pubshitters on my server.

Some general stuff:
- You are encouraged to make your own faction. Warbros will have one, auto-accepting peace treaties. You can apply to join us, but if you're not into building shit together and sperging out on TS3, this might not be for you. Buddy up with someone, make things happen.
- Warbros faction will not hold your hand. We'll hep if you are conveniently close and can spare the time/resources, though.
- The server will have some QoL addons, such as the helmet mod. Read the description and understand it. Protip: Turn of the glass reflection, set the shadow scale so there is no shadow and deactivate delayed movement.
- Another is Chat History. Type /ch to see the last 50 messages typed in /global. Might help with catching up.
- Also, Build Info, which gives you information about blocks you're placng. Turn it on/off with /buildinfo in /global chat.
- There's only one respawn ship, the Sparky. It has all you need to survive, some mats, beacon, solars, nuke reactor, refinery/assembler. Spawn in one of those and set out to meet the cold void. Keep in mind that Sparkies cannot land on planets because lol thrust.
- There will not be a Starter Zone for new players, unless you make and maintain one. We won't.
- Every time I log off, I will make a copy of the server save. The server is set to autosave every 30 minutes. Recovery of items might be tricky. Make blueprints of your shit - Ctrl+B.

You might want to grab the Warbros UI, too. See through menus and generally improved visibility and an increased G Menu size.

I run it with the yellow font pack.

Wish you were here.

Last word: Offline raidfags, pls go. You are butts.

>>122527864
You are welcome to come and autism in isolation on our server.

>>122529248
We're not "the /egg/ Spengies group". The Steamgroup is just a whitelist to keep out unwashed pubbies. It is the only way I can regulate access.

>star system scenario
>don't know how to fly the starter ship worth a damn
>crash 3-4 times in a row
>finally make it down intact with one landing gear stuck on the side of a mountain

>start building a little shuttle thing so i can practice flying and also do some mining
>main ship clangs a little, permanently tilts 30 degrees forward

>save
>reload
>ship clangs a little more
>now also tilted about 40 degrees to the right
>have to build ramps and catwalks at weird random angles just so i can get up to the top of the ship

I foolishly ground down all the thrusters (thinking to make it a semi-permanent base for now) so I can't just take off to correct it.
>>
>>122532043
... yeah, we're survival. Creative seems pointless.
>>
>>122530194
I'm almost positive they rigged it so certain blocks have a higher chance of surviving impacts with planets. I've done a ton of crashes now where the cockpit survived and I rolled down a hill inside.
>>
>>122532609
Not him but if that's true I approve. Accidentally crashing into an unknown planet and having to find a way to leave gives me a huge boner.

huh, im kind of new to anything that isnt singleplayer survival, but the image said "creative mode"
i don't really know what the "ship blueprints in creative" thing means

also is

related to warbros?
>>
>>122534343
>i don't really know what the "ship blueprints in creative" thing means
In creative mode you can build a ship and then save the design as a blueprint. Then in survival you can build a projector that will let you easily build a ship with that same design.

If we are talking multiplayer there might be little need to adjust spawn rate of ores, just have the users set their own values, have trade/transaction be mediated by a trading block or as an option for ships/stations similar to how you assign ownership.

Have a separate tab for trade were you can assign what is received and what is sent press confirm, trade rejected if insufficient space is available or criteria not met (banned goods, banned player or faction etc...).

Trade block options:
>User confirmation yes/no (do you agree to this trade offer yes/no dialog box)
>Allow trade yes/no (to lock trade completely)
>List of allowed/banned goods
>List of allowed/banned users/factions

Additional options for cargo containers and what have you
>Allow trade yes/no

That wont stop people from smashing your shit and stealing it however.

That said, it would be fun playing with programmable blocks, timers, and other logic to automate and manage trading facilities and automatically update their values based on supply and demand. That's half the fun right there especially if you can make a mesh network and get them to communicate with one another.

Is there a reason why space engineers runs like such fucking shit now?
I used to get 300 fps average, now I get about 20 fps on a planet
>>
>>122534938
Because it renders so much of the planet and leaks so much memory
>>
>move welder ship gently to mother ship to dock
>connectors freak the fuck out and smack the ships into eachother
>fly back to welding zone to repair because projectors
>connector gets rebuilt and the ships try to reconnect at sanic speeds from about 30m away

FUCK

Server provider just popped a message into the frontend.

Apparently the bug of "DIS IS CREATIVE NOW" is so keen, other people get it, too. Also, yay me, I fixed it by writing it back into the config file.
