If I were to give the intuitive reason as to “Why?,” I’d be predisposed to argue that if a fan was truly fan, then they ought to learn Japanese. After all, to call oneself a visual novel fan without being capable to read Japanese (which the greater amount of all visual novels are written, and untranslated from) is a contentious declaration in some respects. A translation, no matter how ‘good’, by definition, likely cannot surpass the original work if the intent of a translation is to convey the original author’s sentiments. In this instance, my concern with not reading a language in its derivative prose isn’t a technical one (it is true though, that certain phrases are better left in Japanese, untranslatable to most dissimilar languages). But rather, one of scope. There are approximately 8-15 new visual novels being released monthly, with each, having at least fifteen hours of reading time. A translated work however, is announced once in a while, and completed, a year or so (at ‘good pace’) after its announcement. So if the concern was one purely pragmatic (time investment:amount of works read), then certainly, investing in learning a language would provide far more benefits than waiting patiently.

For anything that isn't 2deep4u Scaji shit, the author's sentiments pretty much don't matter. His logic that translation can't be as good as the original falls apart there. If a story starts out being shit like Comyu's, no amount of fancy language will save it, untranslatable or not.

You pretty much misunderstood that.
A translation is taking Japanese, and turning it into English. What's the goal of the translation? If it's to carry the same meaning as the Japanese (the author's sentiments) then the translation will always be inferior. You say 2deep4u shit but it's actually the case for a lot of mundane things, which isn't a phenomenon you can properly understand without knowing 2 languages yourself, I think. If a translation is intended to IMPROVE the original text, like how Arduoc fixed script errors and overall blandess in Kamidori, then yes translations can surpass the original, in certain viewpoints. However, most translations aren't like that; most are, of course, trying to reflect the original Japanese's sentiments, and therefore they are always inferior.

I know three languages, granted the only translation I've done is a lot cleaner because the languages are pretty close. The goal of translation should never be the equivalent of a human dictionary. The author's sentiments, in the sense of being the particular words used to represent their intent, are mostly worthless. "I want you to put c**k in me anon-kun" and "Take me now" both have the same intent, but the particular sentiment is different. One of them sounds awkward in one language, the other in the other. Operating from the assumption that the goal of translation is to best present the same content to an audience using a different basis of knowledge and shared experience using different words and figurative language, it's necessary to discard the particular expressions used in the original. But that's fine, because it's rare that there isn't some near equivalent in the output language. Sometimes that near equivalent is better at communicating the intent than the original. Japanese stuff loves to fuck with pronouns, and a lot of that kind of thing actually works better in a language like Spanish where you can do the same thing but better. If the rest were translated literally, then the translation would therefore be the same or better than the original for discarding the sentiments but keeping the intent.
It all comes down to whether or not you think the goal of translation is sentiments (e.g. wording) or intent (e.g. meaning).

They absolutely can. I point to the Spanish pronouns example I gave. Some tricks just straight up work better in other languages. It can be clear that the intent is to mislead with pronoun usage from the Japanese, but the Spanish equivalent can just skip straight past all that and have it be implicit.
Whether most translations do succeed at it is another matter entirely. Many translators opt for the human dictionary route and as a result things seem awkward when you read them. Compare with the stuff Koestl does. He totally rewrote the "A Magi Nation" scene, but he nailed the intent of the original.

I see. I understand your sentiments, and in fact my perspective on translations has been brightened. However, despite that, I still agree with >>122442168 in general, for two primarily reasons, which I have encountered quite often in my own translation endeavours:
1) Sentiments (i.e. wording) is often fairly important in a work. Even if intent is 100% conveyed, I would say that the translation is inferior to the original which 100% conveyed both wording AND meaning.
2) The simple fact that the vast vast majority of translators are not nearly competent enough to achieve 100% intent/meaning in the first place.
I have definitely improved my views on translations on an ideal level, but in the "real world", ideal translations are not made, and even perfectly ideal translations are inferior to do changed sentiments. You mentioned in the beginning

However, I think they do. As an "exaggerated" example, every word in certain Shakespeare plays follows iambic parameter. To convey the intent of shakespeare, but to do so without maintaining rhymes/iambic parameter/puns etc will be "inferior" to the original. To use a "common" example, the Japanese have like 100 creative words for female genitals, but a translation will always be forced to either stick to intent (vagina/pussy) and lose flavor, or will be forced to be awkward (love hole/honey pot/flesh crevice).

What I took from " if a fan was truly fan" was that someone who REALLY likes visual novels would be willing to put forth the effort to learn Japanese given the HUGE rewards for doing so. I started translating a VN and it is grueling. It has 9,000~ lines. I go through 100 lines through about an hour of dull work every morning. It's going to take me 3 months to finish, daily dedication to something I don't really enjoy. Aiyoku is 65,489 lines. About 10,000 are translated, *maybe*, so that leaves you with 55,000. Are you willing to tediously work on this for hours every day for 1.5 years? For NO benefit to yourself, except that OTHER people get to read it? I don't think that's likely, anons.

The only reason I'm even able to go as fast as I am is because I don't care too much about preserving "sentiments" and have gone entirely on "intent" which for porn makes it way easier. I ran into that problem myself. It especially hurts because all the lines are in one big document, so even when you spend hours on it you've barely scrolled down the page. The trick is to just break it into manageable chunks, translate a section at a time, and if you're struggling with a part (either because you don't know how to translate it, or you're just really bored), go translate another section that you like more, or just stop working on it for a while. The other solution is to stop posting about it, because if you keep saying you're gonna do it, people will expect you to, which creates pressure, which can actually make it harder to translate. Just remember that nobody's forcing you to do this, you can do it at whatever pace you like, and if you want you can quit anytime.

I have it split into chunks of 100 lines a day. The laziness I feel far exceeds any pressure, the only pressure I really feel is to actually succeed at something and do something vaguely important (to me). The best thing that happened to me was learning Koirizo had a translation riddled with errors, because if people didn't care about THAT, they won't care about mistakes in my translation either (moreso decisions to change things than mistakes), so a lot of the pressure of living up to expectations was lessened. If the going gets really bad I'll just drop it to 50 lines a day and finish in 6 months, or even 25 and in 1 year. I wouldn't WANT to do that but it's an option I'll take over quitting, for sure.
And yeah, what a fuckin' huge document; sometimes I hit like space or something and scroll down a lot, so I have to slowly go through like a thousand untl'd lines to get back to my place. What a downer.

one thing that helps alot is if you can get a decent programmer/scripter/hacker that can rip the text from the game for you in a logical manner. it's night and day working on one large block of text in notepad compared to being able to have the text ripped out in sequential order in notepad, or being able to work and edit all the text as an online document then run a script that dumps it all correctly into said text document.
