The only part that really let me down with actual hunts was the introduction for each monster on the first go. I really miss ecology videos or the cutscenes with your hunter walking in and meeting them in dramatic fashion. Generations just slaps their name and calls it a day which is odd for the new monsters.

Did you upgrade your wep a bunch? Because the new upgrade system makes it a bit easier to make the same weapons stronger and stronger, so your weapon might just outclass the monster you are hunting and you overlooked it because it's still the beginning tree. At least, that's the mistake I made.

I'm strictly guild for Switch Axe but it's a fine weapon though two particular arts makes it focused purely for sword mode because of how easy it is to recharge the meter. Regular axe mode had a infinite swing with a heavy finisher if you press R. I did dabble with Arial style and blade mode gives you an attack going up and an attack going down which makes mounts pretty fast.
I heard hunting horn takes the least advantage of arts and I personally stuck to guild. The ability to repeat notes from the last song to the current one is really handy.
I'd say go for Switch Axe for tail cutting action but it may not click for you as easily it was for me before using styles.

I chose the adept hunting style because it seemed like the most interesting. Aerial was my second choice, though.
Anyway, I was watching some youtube videos and was a bit confused as to how to do some of the moves they were doing in the videos with the hammer.
In the video, the guy was spinning in mid air with blue streaks coming off of him.
I have tried multiple buttons and not once was I able to perform that move. He was using Bushido style, which I assume is Adept.
