It's better than it was in 4, but less versatile than it was in 4U.
You can no longer do super or ultra bursts from a shield thrust in sword mode, and will always cancel into a Yellow Shield Charge, which is less potent than Red, but the action can be used to extend an already existing Red.
Guard Points are more prominent, but are no longer a jump pad for various other actions - either they'll guard and knock you back, or if the impact was lesser than what they were capable of guarding, they'll continue the action that triggered them as if nothing happened.
The Ultra Burst no longer has several shockwaves that follow from the blast. I'm not sure if it loses them entirely, or has at least one or two shockwaves around the impact zone.
Other than those changes it's still alright.

I haven't missed with aerial GS even once.
Fun fact: If you leave the circle pad idle once you vault, then you'll go straight up instead of up and over.
Even more fun fact: You can turn the stick in nearly any direction and do a complete aerial 180 in order to hit. You want to do this to angle yourself in a way to immediately vault off the monster again.
Smashing in faces for days. Also another fun fact: Aerial GS's draw attack has a small hop that closes distance AND also counts as a jump attack despite being drawn from the ground.
I feel like Hammer and GS got some of the best implementation of styles. Maybe also Lance/DB, although less so.

First time too, I'm having a horrible time with him. He moves around SO MUCH and he does so many fake moves I never know when an actual hit is coming and when it is I can't fucking adept dodge/block it for the life of me, save for the 2 or 3 obvious ones. The 4 monkeys he summons in every map that continuously throw snowballs at you 24/7 are a huge pain, and I just overall can never find a window to do damage at him.

They need ways to make starter monsters more prevalent. Seltas Queen was a step in the right direction, with the regular Seltas essentially being used as ammo

there's no problem when playing solo but when you're playing with friends (but especially with randoms) you have to check the quest first, then go to the prep area which is at the OPPOSITE CORNER, change your stuff, come back and finally take the quest.
They really fucked up with the prep area. There's also no reason why the hub should be such a large area. This is why the previous gathering halls worked so well.

When you get to the place you can move it around, the right hand side represents the bottom screen placement, and the left hand side represents the top. Of you look closely you can see your healthbar represented, and next to that the map. Then you can move the map wherever.

That's LOADING your shield.
You want to CHARGE your shield. It's different.
By doing X+A several times in sword mode, you can shield thrust into a Yellow Shield Charge. This is the weaker of the two, but if you do a Red Shield Charge after the time limit you built up will carry over and add on, plus the motion can be used to extend a Red Shield Charge.
Red Shield Charge is when you do the X+A attack in axe mode with phials loaded (preferably a full stock), then hit R to cancel out of the super burst and back into sword mode. This leaves the energy bouncing around in the shield, removes sharpness loss from guarding, adds explosive charges to damage any attack that strikes your shield, and both increases axe mode attack damage and gives the Loading Draw (x after loading your shield) and Shield Thrust (x+a in sword) explosive charges, for no phial cost.
During Red Shield, your Super Burst (x+a in axe) will change into the Ultra Burst, and will not leave an explosive charge but instead do massive damage, at the cost of eating all available phials (with increased damage for each one) as well as your shield boost. You can downgrade an Ultra to a Super by pulling back on the movement pad and pressing X so you don't lose your phials and shield.

Is it just me, or is SnS really weak in the beginning? I don't remember struggling this much with SnS before (in 3U and 4U). All the buffs are all well and good, but the SnS weapons seem rather weak. I can't find a weapon with good status + decent sharpness. Everything has a sliver of Green and it'll take me until next rank to get an upgrade and even then the sharpness isn't improved by much. I think I'm going to switch weapons soon. This just isn't fun.
What is Blast element even used for after the massive nerf after 3U? If all it does is extra damage, why not just use poison or higher raw?

Blast can indeed break parts and cause staggers, however Poison has a mechanic where you can build up the value while the current poison is siphoning heath, so you can immediately re-apply it as soon as it runs out.
Unless you're tripping, trapping, or otherwise debilitating a monster constantly, poison's going to help you out while you can't get to the monster. This is super useful for ultra fast monsters or ultra big monsters that take big strides, so they tend to balance out in 1-2 player scenarios, but blast ultimately tends to shine more in 3-4 player scenarios due to the haphazard nature of such group hunts where it's harder to target certain zones without being interrupted by others.
Also for all monsters you do need to take their individual weaknesses into account. For some, poison will do more than blast ever will due to resistances, and the reverse is also true. Some monsters you're just better off using the right element on, and so on.
Of course all of this gets ignored once you find that one weapon with the stats that are a little too much better than any other weapon in that category, which is why I try to avoid shit like kelbi bow, kama sedition, and so on.

It's more like you're just starting to notice the huge shift in designs between gen 1-2 monsters and gen 3-4 monsters. Their movesets, their behaviours, their timing, their hitboxes, and so on. It's all shit in comparison, even if the general idea of the monster is okay.
The only monsters from gens 1-2 that are actually good in gens 3-4 are ones that got tweaks and reworks. In particular, monsters from 2G/FU are the closest. Nargacuga, Tigrex, Rathalos and Rathian got some changes compared to how they were in Gen 1/2, and so on.
Tri was a fresh start for the series and the gameplay and monsters of third gen reflected that well. I actually wouldn't mind seeing MH5 be Tri 2.0, y'know? Another restart would do the series good.
Either that or they start actually changing monsters from gen 1/2. Like, on a basic level. Visually, and mechanically. Call them the same thing but make the excuse that evolution and breeding has changed them over time.

The lagiacrus fight in flooded forest was the worst because it never went into that nice cave area and it took up so much space, that it felt very cramped next to it in the other regions, and there was very little room for maneuverability.
Most monsters only used that cave for sleeping in, which was annoying.

Literally no different from a standard controller, aside from the ergnonomics and lack of stick-clicking, the former of which you can very easily fix by getting peripherals you cheap fuck.
Swimming in 3U for 3DS was serviceable, it's just that the mechanics of the combat were unenjoyable because of the "but the monster's in their element and you're not" excuse. If you swam faster as a basic mechanic, if you dodged further (or got more i-frames on dodge) as a basic mechanic, if your camera got pulled a little further out or defaulted to a marginally higher angle for better depth perception, if weapons with distance-closing attacks closed more distance, if weapon hitboxes were a tiny bit bigger to compensate for the increased area of movement and motion of underwater creatures, it would have been more enjoyable.

I've started whacking monsters with my arrows when they get close, then backhop-rolling into LV3. It's like getting damage in without having to worry about coating loss, and giving time for my stamina to recover.

You can get the felyne lady to look for very specific palicos. The two core skills and their appearance are basically the only two things you CAN'T customize. Everything else is changeable. Some weapons requires covering your elements so you end up having 5+ weapons of the same kind, which makes it harder to experiment with other weapons due to ressources spread thin in the beginning (bow is one of those). Others (GS for example) just require one good raw weapon so you can do whatever you want. There's no penalty other than having to grind more, though.

It's just so fucking boring. It technically has three different moves, but they don't matter because they're still countered by the charge spam tactic: just run up, hit it once or twice, roll away. rinse, repeat. The most strategy you can put into it is to try and lure it near a ledge so you can mount it and end the fight faster. I use fucking Adept Longsword and every time except the first, I've killed it before I even get Sakura Slash charged up.
