Nintendo has needed to enter the budget holiday console market for a while now, but this is kind of disappointing. I was hoping they would release something that would really disrupt the sub $50 'console' market, but this is pretty much in line with other similar devices.
Hopefully its actually using a modern SOC version of the NES hardware and not just a budget ARM chip running an emulator.
I dont get why Nintendo is so good at selling people roms.
Recent examples being OOT and MM, they basically debut and were showcased at some of the 3DS's biggest games, then you have Pokemon Red and Blue being sold again as digital roms and now this.
Nintendo loves going back in time and selling popular ip's and even now, reselling their own consoles to people.

Which is a proprietary connector, and not even the one used on the NES so this won't work with NES peripherals.
Sega's system meanwhile actually used a standard port meaning that all kinds of peripherals will work with it. Plus this using the WiiMote connector isn't great since most stuff built to plug into it has a very short cable.

They pushed the Wii U as an all inclusive all-Nintendo machine stretching far back and far forward. This isn't really a move away from the WiiU, its a holiday console built to be put under the Christmas trees of 30-40 year olds as a nostalgic novelty. Its made to print money for a couple of months a year.
Actually compared to some of the other systems it seems pretty disappointing as it won't play NES cartridges, won't take NES peripherals, and has a way smaller library of games built in than many of its competitors.

I think it's more licensing than anything as to why they can't simply put the entire NES library. I'm sure there are games whose development companies no longer exist and the IP rights are floating around somewhere.

They couldn't do it themselves without Sony because they would need the PSX firmware.
Similarly they couldn't do it with the PC version because right now that version is Windows-only.
If they would port the game to Android/Linux or GNU/Linux then they could easily release their own hardware for playing the game.
I'm honestly kind of surprised they haven't because a cheap plug and play Final Fantasy machine probably would print money.

Man, it is amazing how powerful it has gotten so fast.
I mean the 1st version could barely run a GUI, but after that you could not only run that, but all sorts of classic systems.
Hell, someone even complied the Quake 3 source so that it runs decently on the newer ones.
And apparently the $5 Raspberry Pi Zero can emulate some stuff as well.

As far as it is known, microsoft has always been the most neutral in the console wars.
Just like nintendo let them use their n64games in RR, its possible nintendo could get permission from ms to release some n64 games for its micro plug&play console.

It is more worth their effort to develop and port/remake their old stuff to mobile, they have with a bunch of Dragon Quests, the Secret of Mana, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, and even The World Ends With You.
