The SNES was my first console as well, but my older brothers had an NES boxed up and tucked away that I eventually discovered.
I recommend it. A lot of really good games. A simpler, arcade-y era (not too simple like Atari, etc. though) that I feel was fading even during the SNES era.

New games are just much better, plain and simple. I love the NES but I know that Zelda isn't worth $30. It's fun but absolutely dated. The PSP doesn't have twin analog, an hdmi port, or the ability to emulate Dreamcast.
Not that the PSP is bad, but the Shield doubles as a DS/PSP anyway and runs those games at a higher res than they would on official hardware.

The games are so bad they're not even worth pirating anymore, while back in the day you could torrent a stalker and still have fun with it, games like asscreed and fallout 3 just aint worth it even pirate.
The industry would be better off if everyone pirated whatever games they think "is not worth the price" because it would mean that games would have to try cater to quality over quantity, something that has been lost in the new graphical age (happened with launch of x360/ps3 gen imo). The cost of re-manufacturing all of those components would be much higher than most people are willing to pay. It isn't like you can just go to Intel and ask them to churn out a custom chip for a few cents when they have no existing line for it, not to mention the cost of restarting game manufacturing when all of that infrastructure has long since vanished.
And then there'd be the issue of stocking the variety of games, and marketing them individually. Which you could sidestep by bulk packaging, but that would be fucking enormous and remain costly.
It would be neat to have the original hardware, but it's completely unreasonable to expect it.
