Am I the only one who isn't fucking addicted to Pokémon Go? I got it at launch and it's ok I guess. I've been giving it a chance all week and I finally figured out why I don't like it:

Your personal enjoyment of the game is largely determined by factors outside of your control, such as
>where you live
>if you have friends who play
>having the time during daylight hours to actually grind a decent team

Maybe it's just my experience but nobody at my job plays it, so I can't go catch stuff on our lunch breaks and my friends who do play live far away from me, meaning I can only play with them on the weekends. Thus, they've all pulled far ahead of me in terms of player level and average CP of their Pokémon.
>>
So I'm curious but is there evolutions? Can you find starters?
>>
It's a social game. You don't have to like it. Normies and schoolchildren like it because they go on hunts around town with their friends.
>>
Whole thing sounds autistic

And possibly dangerous
>>
>>344723187
Yes, you are literally the only person.

Stay strong, friend. The world will need your strength in the coming years, when they launch phase two.
>>
>>344723334
Yes and yes. Evolutions require you to catch a ridiculous number of the same Pokemon, and starters are fairly rare.
>>
>>344723334
You can find starters. Evolutions happen, in a totally different system, using Pokemon-specific "Candy" - so basically, catching a bunch of Pidgey's will give you enough Pidgey-candy to evolve a Pidgey, or a Pidgeotto. Evolving rare pokemon gets hard.
>>
>>344723334
Yes and yes
>>
>>344723334
Yes you can evolve and yes you can find starters. Your first catch will always be one of the three starters and then the others can be in the wild or in eggs. I don't know if it's because I'm in the midwest, but the only fire Pokemon I've gotten so far is a Charmander that came out of an egg and I caught Bulbasaur in the wild. Squirtle was my starter I picked so I have all three, but evolving them will be hard as shit considering how rare they seem to be.
>>
>>344723357
I'm a normie, but find it's very fun to go alone as well - at the corner of my block, over the last hour, there were about ~30 people who came and went because of lures. And someone found a Magnemite, and many of us went over and caught it.

It's "social" and I learned a couple people's names, but most people in that group of 30 were coming solo, with the occasional couple or small group. Mostly the conversation is people laughing and going "this is so ridiculous" or talking about Pokemon.
>>
>>344723403
I caught two venusaurs from my house the other day.
It seems like I catch more Pokemon just logging on every now and then rather then walking
>>
Don't care to try it.
I want to lay around inside taking it easy whenever I have free time, why would I play a video game that forces me to go outside?
>>
>>344723537
So the Pokemon aren't randomly generated per device, but an actual thing that anyone can capture? I've been trying to talk my gf into playing with me but I wasn't sure how it worked.
>>
>>344723524
Weird, where I live Growlithes are pretty common.

Just a note: you can also start with Pikachu - just walk away from your starters 4 times (on the 5th, Pikachu will join).

For what it's worth, I've caught 2 Pikachus (on top of my starter Pikachu) but no other starters - but the normal starters can be gotten from 2.0 km eggs, so hopefully upon hatching enough I'll get some.
>>
>>344723389
This
It just seems too autistic to me to walk around with your phone out playing pokemon in the literal middle of the street.

Good thing this thing really picked up and is now on the news and everything because otherwise you'd look literally retarded if everyone and their mom didn't know about it now
>>
>>344723628
Yes! When someone finds a pokemon, (for some amount of time), anyone can go to that place to get that pokemon.

The only exception is when you use an item called Incense, which gives you extra chances of finding Pokemon, but doesn't help others.

So people put down Lures, which attract pokemon, and the whole group around the lure will see the same new pokemon at the same time. For the most part - i was just in a group where a newer player didn't see 2 of them - not sure if leveling, or if his internet was bad.
>>
I give it another week before people start getting tired of the enormous time commitment and start uninstalling

>>
>>344723682
Not really, since most people walk around holding their phones out anyways. It's always hard to tell (when looking for other players around a lure) if they're playing, or just snapchatting / twittering / texting.

I'm actually fucking infuriated by Pokemon GO.
It shows how fucking simple it is to goad idiots into wasting cash on a gutted version of another game.

Just fuckin' depresses me.
>>
>>344723642
I live in the Midwest, which is why I assume all I get a swarms of bug, grass, and normal Pokemon. I have caught a few water mons (I caught a Magikarp in the middle of my work parking lot, which was bizzarre), but electric and fire don't seem to exist in Kansas. Maybe I need to level up since I'm only 8.
>>
Is it only the classic 150 Pokémon for now?
>>
Played it for an hour, felt like a weirdo wandering around playing a kids game even though everyone else is doing it. It's also shallow as fuck, so I don't see the appeal.
>>
>>344723824
>Get beat in a battle
>Cry to the police after the victor rightfully takes half your money

You knew what you were getting into when you became a trainer.
>>
>>344723851
If they're typing they're not playing pokemon.

Snapchat or whatever is harder to tell but since pokemon is the fad this month it's a fair bet.
>>
>>344723403
Really? I caught a bulbasaur while I was taking a shit.
>>
>People call playing this thing autistic
>Everyone and their mother is playing it

I don't think so anon
>>
>>344723981
Shallow phone games are what people want anon. Its mindless enough for the masses to latch on to and since everyone is playing it, it gives more of a reason for people to join the conversation and play it.
>>
>>344723950
I think leveling is part of it, but I'm not sure. It's clear they aren't using all 150 from the game yet.

There are three geographic types used in the game - desert, grass, and water. All locations are one of those three. But within each, you have areas where certain pokemon are more common.

I'm guessing rarer pokemon are generally congregated in areas with more pokestops around. This really hurts rural players, but even then you can probably get a lot of good stuff by understanding how the "pokemon nearby" feature works and using it (not saying you don't use it - but I just learned that as you walk, it reorders, and the top ones are closest to you).

>>
It's free, I'm not complaining. It also gamifies long walks, and I had a few lovely ones so far. You lot are taking this a bit too seriously.
>>
Not being lucky enough to live/work near a pokestop is probably the biggest factor keeping me from enjoying it. GF works right next to one and can spin the thing all day and is sitting on a few hundred balls. Meanwhile I have to drive on my lunch to get a handful and am constantly close to 0. Honestly, the best compromise would have been to have pokeballs doled out in certain amounts daily and not provide XP at pokestops because players who have a geographic advantage like that already have 1000+ CP mons dominating gyms.
>>
>>344723187

Is there anyone who is actually addicted to Pokemon Go? It doesn't seem like the type of game that is possible to become addicted to.
>>
>>344724046
On an iPhone, it's very hard to tell typing to tapping. Pokeball motions + AR camera wackiness are the only ways I can tell they're playing without seeing their screen.

>>
>>344724336
Yeah, I'm jelly of the people who work at a Pokestop. I have a decent number on my route to and from work, but I'm still usually pretty close to zero so I've been running away/avoiding catching Pokemon, which is lost XP.
>>
>tfw neighborhood is super fucking quiet and you look like an absolute creep walking around alone unless its to walk your dog.

I genuinely don't understand the Pokeball toss mechanic. Using the same motion and release point, the balls seems really fucking erratic. Sometimes it goes past them, other times it falls short. I'm not 100% certain about the circles. I know the color indicates difficulty but fuck if I know if I'm supposed to toss it when it's full or small.
>>
>>344724696
I seriously doubt anyone cares if you're out for a walk. Cmon man.

I like it because me and my girlfriend go on nice walks together and catch some pokemon.

>>
>>344724751
You have to toss it when the circle is small.
>>
>>344724751
If you hit the pokemon, you catch them.

If you hit inside your green/yellow circle, you get a bonus. If the green circle is big, it's +10 (Nice). If it's medium, it's +50 (Great). If it's small, it's +100 (Excellent).

After a day of playing, I've gotten a lot better at throwing. Turn off AR Mode as a first step. Way easier.

Pokemon Go is the least autistic thing you could do right now. I almost forces you to go outside, walk around, and engage with other people to get the most out of it. I spent 3 hours walking around with people I never even knew at the local campus, finding pokemon and battling gyms on Saturday. Then I spent another few hours getting out of the house, doing errands I rarely would do on a Sunday because of Pokemon Go. It doesn't require you to hold the phone in your face either, you can walk normally till your phone vibrates then pick it up and figure out if it's a pokecenter or pokemon that needs catching.

There were some cool ideas. I thought the gym leader thing was cool, and the novelty of being able to catch pokemon is neat. It's at its best when you end up finding a place you didn't know about

Other than that though it's just eh. There's no breeding, battles are lame, there's barely any social interaction even though it's a mobile app (you can't trade with your friends, for example) the only way to make pokemon evolve is if you keep catching them over and over again, and it eats your battery like a motherfucker. Maybe all of that will change with updates in the future but right now it's just eh for me.

I also expected to find other players that are logged in on the map, and be able to fight them or trade, almost like fighting randoms and trading with that rare person in the games.
the mechanics of the game could use some major re-working to feel like an actual pokemon game, but I guess that would take more time, more dedication and cost an actual game's worth.

What the fuck? Autistic? Is't he most normie fucking "game" imaginable. People who don't even play pokemon, let alone video games, are playing this.

Debatable. The servers are shit and the game itself is unstable and prone to crashing. I was logged out multiple times on a walk I took earlier until the servers finally shat themselves and refused to do anything for the rest of my walk.

I hope the battle system from the games gets in. With pvp it'll be hella fun.

True, I also hate staring at my phone and walking at the same time, but it's still not hard to put your phone down to your side till your screen locks, then turn it back on again for a few. The reason pokemon go sucks is because it revolves around a shitty RNG minigame as it's core mechanic. You might as well be pulling the lever on a slot machine to spit out another slot machine as the prize so you can have a chance at scoring some points.

There's nothing RNG about it. Pokestop and gyms are fixed locations, and Pokemon spawns are fixed as well.

No, it's all 150. Your pokedex will only go as high as the highest Pokemon you've seen, so you'll need to see a Dragonite to unlock all 149 entries. Good luck tying to find a mewtwo though.
>>
This idea have potential, but it is seriously misused right now.

Remove CP, add the normal game leveling system and combat system, maybe make it harder so people arent with max level pokes on day 3, make legendaries HARD to find, if possible hard to access, like everyday it appears somewhere random in the world. Good fucking luck.

Live in Utah. All of my friends are playing this game and it's all they talk about. Don't have much time to play it myself, but I really don't care to do so. I've spent more time than any of them playing the main series games and actually breeding and training Pokemon. Kinda funny how the one in my group of friends who is the most obsessed with Pokemon completely ignores this phenomenon, but not that weird considering the low quality and content of this mobile game.

I was out catching Pokemon with my dad and my sister earlier, and I was super worried about getting arrested.

I'm in my twenties, my dad is in his late forties, and my sister is sixteen.

It was the middle of the night and she could walk faster than us. It looked like we were following a teenage girl around.
>>
>>344725476
It's fun, but I'm probably not going to get super invested into it or anything.

I'm really disappointed you don't battle to catch other Pokemon or anything like that. It feels like Nintendo really dropped the ball there.

And the absolute top-tier people are going to be the people with lots of money to burn who just buy a lot of shit, as far as I can tell.

I honestly don't get it, I heard in the last thread there's not even a battle system to fight players. What could possibly be so alluring for this shit? Just catching shit? Pokemon are locked to two abilities for fuck sake.

Please explain.
>>
>>344723187
I don't get the appeal, is it purely a social thing?
I've spoken to my brother who has it, there are not really any battles or trading with friends, it just seems like a glorified stamp collection you can show off to your friends.
I can't see this game hanging around too long if there's nothing to do with your pokemon after you catch it.
Can you grind your pokemon to higher levels? What does that achieve?
>>
>>344733515
It is a social game, shocking I know.

I walked 7km before I even was aware of the fact, this thing is just so easy to lure you into it.

Besides, me and my wife enjoyed the ENTIRE fucking walk like we had not in years.

So basically, fucking amazing if you have friends OR are looking to meet people (fucking drop a lure in a park and hang out with other peeps).

You use candy to make your Pokemon more powerful. You get this candy from catching more of the same Pokemon. And if you have enough of it you can make them evolve.

You can apparently start challenging gyms once you get to level 5. No idea if you can start fighting people.

The major problem I'm having so far with this game is that you don't fight to level up and catch the Pokemon. It feels like Nintendo dropped the ball with this while still making a mint off it.

What are they at now? Eight billion dollars?
>>
>>344733880
There are territorial battles for gyms. The combat is simple and mostly a tap fest, but the system of levelling friendly gyms and dismantling enemy ones is pretty good.
>>
>>344734136
I feel like they're going to add all this new shit into later on, and then it might be worth playing when it actually has some substance to the game.

As always, why they didn't wait and launch the game with all the features I've no idea. By the time they release battles and trading it would have been forgotten about.

>>344734230
Are there factions you can fight? Do you fight actual other players? Can you choose your faction?
>>
>>344733921
I tried doing it the social aspect of it at my local park, but I only saw couples walking around, and other people who weren't really in the mood to talk. I don't like spontaneously meeting new people though, so I wasn't too bummed.
Also walking is a fun hobby and I sincerely hope you and your wife continue to do it after this fad wears off.

I don't play it much. I usually open the app check if pokemon are near, catch those that don't involve me moving and close it. I'm limited by my data. I have 30MB, yes you read that right, of 3G. I do technically have "unlimited" but it's throttled to 2G speeds once I've capped on 3G. I do not have 4G. I'm limited to wifi and usually public is too slow so I'm basically limited to only using the app near my house.

I can't find better plans with more data for $40 and even then while the program runs on my first gen Moto G it is somewhat resource intensive. It's hard to tell whether I'm being bottlenecked by my phone or the data but the data seems more likely.

It's honestly a good time, I've got a gym right now and I'm top dog. Shit is fun,and just wait all these people are busting their loads evolving so quickly for Mon that will be good for a week but I've got a few cooking that will be absolute beasts since I'm making sure they'll be maxed out.

>>344736375
Pokemon literally will double or more from their cp before evolving when evolved. And sometimes the evolved pokemon will take 2 candy to power up as well. So it's better to do it before evolving, I mean eevees spike like a motherfucker when evolved.

If you wait for a really good evee and then power it up some before evolving it will be far better.

Still, candies are valuable so it might be in your best interest to keep searching for a high level of a pokemon instead you wanna evolve. Higher the level of the trainer the higher cp mon can be caught. Don't drive yourself crazy with this shit but it does help.
