This "game" is pretty fun. Walked a good half dozen kilometers today.
There doesn't seem to be other trainers around me yet, so became the master of 3 gyms near my home. I live in a dorm full of nerds, so I imagine they will be contested soon.

Whenever you enter a 'battle', there's an AR switch in the top right.
If you're concerned about battery or pokeballs, I'd keep it off, since I'm assuming having the camera on drains more battery, and whenever it's off the Pokemon just stay still so they're easier to catch.

It's pretty strange. All the shit you need you get from playing the game and collecting coins from the gyms you own. You can buy the coins, but there's no point unless you want to hatch a gorillion eggs at the same time or constantly use incense.
So if you actually go outside and collect Spots and Gyms and catch pokemon, then you don't have to buy a thing. It's pay to not play.

Niantic has enough experience with Ingress to know how to run this game. Soft-launching in Australia/NZ only is just a common strategy when you launch a large product like that. You want a rolling start to avoid things going badly.
Granted some will just download the APK or make an AUS/NZ iTunes accounts just for that, but it's a small minority.

It's mostly based on Ingress nodes. Seriously everyone knew this would just be Ingress w/ a Pokémon coating on top of it. Nodes (Pokéstops/Gyms) are just recycled from Ingress.
The game cannot be so granular to be giving you electric pokémon because there's some electronic store nearby... At best it will just use geographical/terrain data such as mountains/sea/plains etc. to adjust appearance rate of certain pokemon, that's it.
Also the roster is super limited right now (I believe we only have the first 150), so when you remove special pokemon like legendaries, Mewtwo etc. that doesn't give much possibility for variance.

Amerifag here (New York City) Just installed the app off some shady site last night and spent a couple of hours playing the game this morning. There's no tutorial, so I was pretty much standing outside in the hot ass sun trying to figure out wtf to do. Eventually I figured out that I had to walk to the points of interest and collect shit.
How the fuck do I find pokemon the correct way? I keep walking to these spots on the map where little blades of grass would be shown floating in the air, but no fucking pokemon show up... I keep pressing the little icon on the bottom right and then I select the pokemon that I want to find (it's grayed out because I haven't discovered it yet?) I kept selecting the grey'd out bulbasaur and krabby thinking that when I walk over to the blades of grass, it will turn into a pokemon that will try to engage me or something, but nothing ever happened (yes I closed and re-opend the app). after 30 min of walking and collecting items from the points of interest, I finally found a DODUO! And then I found another....and another..and another...and another..........Again through trial and error I figured out that you'll only get REAL pokemon to come to you if you use and item called incense that attract them to you
The battle system is complete shit, again, no tutorial. I stood out there in the sweltering heat fighting a pokemon at one of the gyms. I lost every single time. It was only after I was down to my last doduo that I fucking realized i was supposed to be moving my pokemon around and fight it myself, instead of thinking they would fight on their own. In the end i still lost after the gym's rattata hit each one of my doduo's only three times.
Also, there's literally one guy who owns all the gyms around my area. I know this game isn't out in the states yet officially, but still, this guy "coolkid" walked some fucking miles to conquer every gym he came across. (I guess they were vacant to begin with since no one knows about this game).

The mid end huawei phones with 1080p screens and 12 megapixel cameras cost like $100-$150 dollars. The LG G3 and G4 are sub $200 and those have quad-hd screens and 13-16 megapixel cameras. Download opera maxx. It helps to reduce the amount of data that you use from background applications and ones you currently have open. I only get 3 gigs a month, which i can burn through in a month but with opera maxx( I promise i'm not shilling) I have to try to use up all my data.
