The difference between VLR and ZTD is that VLR wasn't a finale; it wasn't it's job to resolve and tie up loose ends. It introduced things so that they would get resolved in the finale that was to come. VLR was never intended to be a finale and so that wasn't its job. ZTD didn't do its job.

What puzzles or decisions did you guys like the most?
I liked the pod room the most because of the shifting room mechanic and the sliding block puzzles (though normally boring) were refreshing from the overdone converting numbers/letters, finding keys/screwdrivers shit in every other puzzle room.
I liked the antidote part because I was genuinely impressed by Akane's plan, and I liked figuring out her reasoning and solution.
Why do people criticize VLR so much? The game answers all the questions about the game it just leaves threads to be explored in the sequel but it's not like you are left wondering about the events of VLR after it.

My reasons for not liking were how it didn't live up to the expectations I had after my experiences with 999. Additionally, while it resolved its own internal mysteries and plot lines, it felt cheap that it was all done to service a sequel.
Keep in mind this was at a time when it wasn't known if ZTD would ever be made, so it was a cliffhanger that may have never been resolved.

Most of the story is self-contained. Akane Junpei Phi and Sigma have their origin stories but you don't really need to know them to appreciate the story, you're told as much as you need to know.
