I know everyone is sold on this but I just never saw Akane as such a cold person. Everything that she's done has been a product of her own machinations. In 999, she was a mastermind fighting for her LIFE. In VLR, she was a mastermind fighting for THE WORLD. In both games, she knows that there is an end that can be reached. Yeah, it's really fucked up to force people to kill themselves and each other, but she already knows none of them will die and things will work out.
But in ZTD, she isn't in control at all and that's a huge difference. It's the only part of the series where she doesn't have a complete grasp on the situation in. So she can't play off dying as "It's okay. All of these deaths are worth it because I'll have Jumpy-kun at the end of this." Because one of the paths results in 80% of the world dying, Earth being nearly uninhabitable, and, of course, having to leave Junpei for 40 years and go back to putting him in Life-or-Death situations.
So ZTD is probably the "REALEST" Akane that you've ever seen. Now that she has no "script" to follow, as she did in 999 and VLR, you can see her as she really is: Shy, sweet, and smart. Will argue about the ethics of SHIFTING into parallel consciousnesses (and do it anyway). Will blush hard over anyone finding out how she feels about her Jumpy-kun. Will yandere the shit out of the one who kills her man.

Everything about Left and what we were told about Brother's past was completely thrown away. We didn't learn anything about Lord Gordain, and Dio wasn't in the game in any form, and Clover and Alice's issue was never mentioned.
Uchikoshi said that it would resolve everything from Virtue's Last Reward, even if it didn't resolve everything from 999, but it didn't even do that. He lied about a lot to the fans.

I'm just disappointed with the overarching nonary game in ZTD. 999 and VLR's games were interesting and the main focus that hid the underlying plot. ZTD hardly had any deliberation in all of its two possible rounds of play. That's why you don't get as rich character interaction in it, the game just pushes you past all the "normal" development and onto the morphogenetic rollercoaster.

These are exactly my feelings on it too. I think some people just expect characters to behave the exact same way no matter what situation they're in and anything else is "inconsistency" even though that makes less sense. Seeing Akane behave differently under different circumstances gives her more depth IMO even if her other incarnations were more intriguing because they were more mysterious.
