Finding a programmer, and good leader, are the two most difficult things. If you can build a decent prototype, and aren't a complete autismo with a lot of drive, then it's butt-easy to find artists. You just have to give them the promise that a project won't fail, and they'll come flocking to you. In order to do that, you only need to build a functional prototype.

I want to help indie game companies by drawing for them
but no one really is looking for artists on my end
they all cry for it in some of these threads, but when confronted, get scared and say they'd rather work for themselves, so there'd be less complications
also because there are shitty artists out there who have better connections but are actually terrible artists that don't do their job correctly which leads programmers to believe that artists aren't even worth looking for to try and work with at all

The battle sprites look fine, but a little... I don't want to say Flash Game-y but, it looks flash gamey.
The UI could use a ton of work, especially the font for the HP/MP numbers. And the spell icons look like shit but I'm guessing they're placeholders.

Not a fan of the overworld graphics either.

Hopefully you get a successful kickstarter, your game looks like fun. Once it's up I'll at least spread it around on my social media.

I actually tried to work with my roommate once on making a webcomic once and we really couldn't come to a decent middle ground on vision vs. effort... it wasn't so much that I disliked his art or anything, it just seemed like the wrong fit for what I'd been writing, and he felt my writing wasn't a fit for his art, so we both lost motivation and quit rather quickly.

As a programmer who can't draw for shit, I would love an artist to take interest and help me with my project.

But the ones I talked too either wants me to tell them what to draw or they go do their own thing (which is similar to shit you find in the horrible corners of Deviant Art). Since I don't really have an idea of what I what I always let them design their own thing and it just turns out so awful I have to cut ties with them after telling them its not what I had in mind (to spare their feelings on how their ideas are garbage).

I'm just trying to make a SRPG in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics, but the last 2 artists I got into contact with, it didn't work out. One of them drew the stereotypical tumblr outlook (red swollen noses, multiple colored people without any consistency etc), and another basically drew a bunch of shitty sonic OC (granted the person knew their shit when it came to line-art and structure), when I asked if they could draw something else (I was okay with furry if it didn't look like fetish pandering), they refused.

I really don't know how to get artists, but it doesn't help that I provide little guidance other than what my game is. I think I need a writefag as well to make a setting

first, show examples of their work because I'm curious

the way you get artists on board is through connections. you know people, you post your own work through forums, and spread the word. you set yourself up for a lonely failure, and thats just what you're going to get.

also, if you and the artist don't know what to do, then its never going to work. the artist and a project manager need proper coordination or else one or the other are going to quit through lazy waiting. It happened to me with two other people. I worked with a guy on steam trying to get a game going in UE4 but he didn't know what his game was going to be about at all, and he didn't hire any other artists besides me since he didn't really know what he was doing. the game failed because it was a year since we took off and he pretty much gave up and stayed in his comfy gmod server which he modded constantly instead of making the game.

It's been a few years and I don't remember if I have their artwork on file. I don't remember the tumblr stereotype's profile and the when I checked the other person's DA a couple years ago it was gone. The project is long dead, I just wanted to talk about it and see what I can learn for the future when I start over again.

My plan was to make a Final Fantasy Tactics like game with a heavier emphasis on clan battles with other people than story. As you progressed through the game, the clans you would fight in random battles would be other players teams rather than pre-determined builds.

I had a lot of stuff planned like classes, skills, stats, formulas, tiles, weapon types. I had a functional grid with movement, tiles with status effects, very basic combat, very basic networking etc. I wasn't using Github, but a free repository system elsewhere that shut down so I can't access my code

Animator's Survival Kit is about as standard as it gets, I'm sure there's plenty of resources online for basic animation regardless though

Bouncing ball is the usual first exercise in animation, and it focuses on spacing and timing to give the illusion of speed, gravity, etc. Its super easy, the more frames it takes to travel the slower its going and vice versa, then you get into ease ins and ease outs

I've been trying my hand at some things in GameMaker Studio and though its got its own language I understand the syntax. The problem I have is remembering to account for all the different things the player might try and do, and how to get an object to act exactly like I want it.

No, more often than not people shit on GM for the wrong reasons. It's an easier environment to develop the early soft skills you need to make a game, being able to use better tools isn't worth much if you don't know where to use them.

The problem with it is that it's restrictive and using it too long, especially on simple mode, can lead to bad habits when moving on to better development environments.

Its a platformer except it's gimmick with Power Ups are songs. The way the song system works is sort of like how Time Powers in Blinx work except you have to get the right notes to play it. You get notes ranging from A to G and certain songs need a certain amount of notes to play each song.

For example, one song is played in notes E-F-A-F-C in rising, so it would require 1 E, 2 F, 1 A, and 1 C note to use the ability.

You get random notes from enemies but depending on the stage they will most likely drop the notes you need to solve the puzzles in that stages. Another thing I planned on adding were full charge items that when used give you all the notes needed for a song, those items being one use.

Also each song has combat capabilities as well so you don't only need them for puzzles.

What do you think?

There was a tutorial I was doing a while back where this guy was making a shmup kind of game where you would fire at the enemy and it would shrink.

I tried to do it on my own before watching him do it and sure the enemy shrank, but then it grew again because the size variable was going into the negative. What you have to do is delete the instance of the object when the size reaches zero. I understand but it caught me off guard at the time.

I think a lot of my confusion was coming from the timing of things, like the movement speed and rate of fire. The formulas needed to determine that isn't easy to just look at and figure out right away. He used a formula to make the objects work like they should between 30 and 60 fps. I guess I'm not good enough at math to come up with it on my own.

It just sounds like something you get used to with time. It's part of those soft skills I mentioned where eventually you will just be able to logically lay out each action that an object will take (shrink then disappear) and then apply your knowledge of the toolset (delete the instance).

Basic movement should be quite simple, I assume you have than down and are looking at a more complicated example with acceleration or deceleration. If you're struggling with one method, try another instead and play about with it via trial and error until you have a better understanding of how it works. I've been in that situation and simply put the project to the side. I'd rather make a simple game to get my standings and save more engrossing stories until I'm able to make something that's worthy of one.
That being said, make sure your alternate project is something you'll be passionate about as well, else you'll constantly want to go back.

Because it gives you EXPERIENCE. The point is to put you on a path such that you might one day be capable of making the game you ACTUALLY want to make. To get there, you have to make less difficult games that you're capable of making, even if you don't particularly want to make them.

If you manage to create a basic tech demo for you game, you might be able to attract an artist. If you have an artist to make your tech demo look good, you might be able to get people to support you via a Kickstarter.

Saying "Hey guys I have this really great IDEA for a game!" is 100% guaranteed to NEVER result in the game getting made.
There are no teams of programmers and artists who think to themselves "Well, now that we're fully capable on our own of creating a game, let's go find someone and pay him to tell us what to do!"

You seem to have ignored the middle of my post.

Learning to program Pong will be the first step in you eventually becoming good enough at writing code to slap together a functional demo of your basic game mechanics with duct tape and glue. It will look like shit and probably not play too well, but it will be a PRODUCT that you can show people. Instead of just being an idea guy, you can say "Hey, I've got this tech demo, but it's art really sucks. Do any artists want to help me out?" You're much more likely to have people join you if you have something, ANYTHING, to actually show them. Once your tech demo gets non-garbage art, you can use it to make people want what your game promises to provide. The existence of the tech demo is evidence to them that you have the ability to deliver a final product. Then you can hire ACTUAL programmers with the money people give you via Kickstarter to make the game.

That's how learning to program Pong will help you.

It will give you quite a lot of basic programming experience that can be applied across the board, yes.

And the point is to make small games first. Games that would be easy with a limited skillset, then move on to more difficult ones. You can't exactly have a "small and easy-to-make" 3D open-world multiplayer game.

And you're still missing his entire point. You get programming experience to make a demo to show off. No one wants to work on a game that is all idea and no substance. Especially if their "leader" has no understanding of how difficult good coding actually is.

Like, ask yourself this: If someone was interested in working on your game right now, what could you show them? A demo? Art? Music? Spectacular writing? Your answer right now is jackshit, and no one will want to work for a literal ideas guy when everyone is an ideas guys. You need to have something definite, and anon is suggesting you start with programming. But even if you can't do that, MAKE something concrete instead of abstract ideas.

Write some code that you can use for debugging. Like a text output somewhere on the screen that you can use to know, for example, what the values of certain variables are at various points in the code. That'll help you find the exact piece of the code that's not behaving as you want it to.

Where is this idea that I'm trying to get this game made coming from?
It's just an idea I'm cultivating and that if I ever do get into game design through something like Unity, I'd maybe try to do some prototype work for. I'm not actively trying to publish a videogame, I have other things in my life that keep me busy and paid.
