For what it's worth, Sakurai did say an interview around E3 2014 that he balances certain characters around 1v1s while other characters like obviously Ganondorf was designed around FFAs.

He was on top because he was ahead of the curve, now everyone has closed the gap because they're working for it harder now that Nairo showed Zero was defeatable.

Once Hoo-hah was gone he primarily used Sheik. Diddy only came out for certain matchups or to beat shit players. All his tournaments after 1.0.4 aside one were won by solo Shiek who was just as busted as Hoo-Hah Diddy. He didn't lose anything but once before both his OP characters for nerfed.
