I disagree: Birth by Sleep has the premise and the ending (which is an extended cut of the fucking fantastic trailer), but everything in between goes between boredom and disgrace. The writing is bland and pretty corny BY KH STANDARDS, and the worlds are barren due to PSP limitations.
Dream Drop Distance has quite a better map design, reaching to the levels of the original gameand I love the demented plot and how it plays out, but it's definitely flawed by the broken flowmotion and boring skill tree.
Chain of Memories (GBA) is really underrated. It's one of the better card style games and really innovated on KH's formula by adding strategy to every move while maintaining free battle space. It also has a whole Riku mode that isn't simply model swapping but another whole thing, and the story maintains the whismical, well written tone of the original game.
KH is KH.

But why? The theme was fantastic and the progression of memory loss was well achieved. The character interactions have the touch the original game had and every boss battle is well paced and interesting in its development. It really pushed the envelope in relation to GBA games (the portrait and model art is really good) and adapted itself to the controls perfectly, and then it gave Riku mode, which is straight up another whole game, just like that.
It was destined to be bland shovelware and it fucking wasn't in any way. How is it garbage?
Sure, using a card system was bold for a developing series and the FMV haven't stood the test of time, but the game is absolutely great if you get past that.

You never needed to grind at all. As long as you just go through each room you open smacking the scenery you'll always have enough points for a pack or two on top of whatever cards occasionally drop. You can emulate the Final Mix version since it has a translation patch. The 2.5 rerelease is pretty much what you get on the PSP version of Final Mix just with a slightly wider view and I think there were some very slight changes outside of that.

The worlds are short because you play as 3 different characters who only really share one world layout and one boss with each other. Each character takes you 8-10 hours to complete if you don't skip cutscenes so in the end it ends up being the same length or slightly shorter than KH1+2

And it will only get better over time. 0.2 is probably an early build and they're not too used to the engine yet. It is pretty easy to not make them look like plastic though and they clearly know hot to do it considering donald and goofy and all the enviroments look fine. It's weird than only the shaders on the human character models don't look that great

the problem is mainly the fresnal ranges and the cubemappings. Cubemapping skin should be a big no-no unless you want characters looking wet (though you could very easily do that with an animated phong mask instead)
but the main issue here is that this is the first time a KH game will have a realistic lighting setup instead of everything being self illuminated 24/7.
I'd hardly call it bad, but awkward, sure. KH isn't really a series known for it's revolutionary graphics.
If they just stick to what the know with the CG they can make it work
