In the game, Aqua manages to push him back and he starts using darkness before pushing it aside and they go at it relatively equal for the most part before it cuts away and Eraqus names her Master and tells Terra he mustn't be afraid of losing.
In the novel (which isn't really canon, but I'll mention anyways), Terra realizes he is losing and tries to use darkness, and ultimately loses the fight, which can be implied with Eraqus' words anyways.

Sora is just special, he can house other people's hearts, as he did with Kairi's in KH1.
Basically when he became a heartless, his body became Roxas, well Ventus' heart went with it, so it took on Ventus' appearances and general skills.
Sora was 'purified' by Kairi being a Princess of Light, though he is still technically a heartless until he and Roxas combine again.
Xion is just a clone made by Xemnas in case Roxas doesn't work out, which is why she looks different to different people. Xion looks like Kairi in a way to Roxas because that's what memory he has left of Kairi, or at least partially.
As for Namine, she's an odd specialty in that she shouldn't exist when Kairi let her body be housed in Sora during KH1, because the heart was captured and not turned into a Heartless. It's probably a thing only Princess' can do.

That's something I never liked, I get he's the main character and all and has ties to Ventus and ultimately Roxas/Ventus' skills afterwards, but the game to me always felt like it was more about Riku than anybody. He has the most development, he's the rightful Realm of Light keyblade wielder, he ultimately gets shit done, and the only character to just usurp the darkness.
I know after the Xehanort Saga it'll be more Sora, but really they should just focus on Riku going forward I think. I mean hell both Terra and Aqua make it a point by how much light he has in him as a kid that it's ridiculous, and don't really even bother commenting on Sora whatsoever.
