They were in the original development plan.
Matsuno wanted Balthier to be the protagonist. Square felt the game wouldn't be successful unless the protagonist was a young effeminate male that could appeal to young guys. Because that was a proven seller.
They had a huge conflict over it and several other aspects and eventually Vaan became the protagonist. Matsuno and Square had a large falling out part way through development and it's why he's no longer with them. Don't know most of the details though.
It's a shame considering Matsuno proved his projects were always 40/40 gold.

Why even? I admit that I haven't played it but I don't like the sound of this at all.
Sure in the original everyone had one and the same board, but they all had different starting positions of said board. And that made all the difference. Different corners and regions of said board was already essentially different jobs to begin with. The skills and perks were clearly categorized on the thing.
So if you wanted a character to master a specific set of skills, essentially taking on that "job", you'd move them to the relevant corner of the board. And due to how they all start at different places on said board, it takes different amounts of time, effort, and resources to get to places for different characters. Though here is the thing, even though they can't all reach the same positions as easily, they can all reach the same positions with enough effort.
This basically mean that you could essentially multi-class and so on. And due to the design of the system you could even choose how far you wanted to go do and could focus your character however you want all while they still have clearly defined specializations from their base stats and starting position on said board.
Why in the world would you remove that in favor of "Choose 1 job, you're stuck with it. Master the class, you're done."?
That sounds like a terrible change. But everywhere I read people appear to praise it. Am I missing something?

Because the universal license board wasn't big enough to keep character diversity well into endgame, you had okay diversity through the main story but when building your characters really starts to matter all your characters are closing in on each other and they start blending into being the same.
The IZJS boards keep your characters diverse through the whole game, they never blend no matter how much you develop them.
And that's why it's so much better.
I think respeccing would have been good, and really, I hope they add it into Zodiac Age, with enough restrictions on it (Like only being able to do it in inns or save points, something like that)
But even with that issue, it's still better endgame than vanilla FF12.

Best soundtrack? Not even close. Pretty much any Final Fantasy that isn't XII or XIII has at least one notable song I can remember by name. These games didn't have any.
Also, the game is super uncomfy. Not one area in the game looked comfy. The story was okay, but all the characters were flat and boring. Vaan sucked, Ashe was boring.

It took me more than one playthrough to connect the dots. In my defense, I first played it at 12, so I definitely glossed over details. That, and it took me a couple of restarts to get through the whole thing. It becomes more interesting when you understand it.

They weren't even that helpful in the beginning of the game. Later on, they're great for applying buffs and debuffs, but some activity on your part is usually required. I wonder if anyone played on active.
I liked the battle system, personally. Also enjoyed the license board and building up characters. The world of Ivalice was pretty refreshing to play through. Hunts offered fun and challenging side quests, you can explore areas early and either get your ass kicked or just find some cool shit. The game's just fun, man. Probably isn't for everyone, but the people who like the game tend to like it a lot.
