Not really. FF12 was, more than anything else, an attempt to actually modernize the JRPG genre mechanically while staying true to its roots. Combat-wise it was basically ATB + movement. It was also a 180 turn compared to FF10 and coming after FF11 which made people pissed because it was an MMORPG. Then you got a direct followup/knee jerk reaction that was FF13. I have a feeling FF12 will get a much better reception with this re-releases than it did back in the day when it had to deal with babby's first FF that was FF10, for example.

I liked these summons, the problem was that there wasn't much incentive to seek the hidden ones out or even use them. The combat was piss easy, even by ff post 10 standards. There's not much point in using skills/magic cause regular attacks worked pretty damn well most of the time. I think the only exceptions were the phoenix boss and yiaxamat hidden boss where going at them straight on gets you rekt.

I found the combat fucking hard up to a point where you had to manage your MP well to last throughout a boss battle. Perhaps I was underlevelled though. After a certain point I started breezing through every encounter.
Main thing I hated about the espers were that they didn't seem to scale, I'm pretty sure Bellyass got one shot late-game which wasn't worth even the lower MP cost.

I never really had issues combat wise. Early game fights were negated by having decent equipment pretty early and easy to get money to by enough to go around. Not to mention if you knew where to look to find chests with hidden gear, if you're not holding out for that spear.
