I never implied this. But as far as the gameplay itself is concerned it has always been part of the core.
Imagine if From Software made a Dark Souls 4 but made it a turn based RPG with random encounters.
If the world design stayed true to the Souls games. The storytelling style stayed true. The lore. And the souls, level and death mechanics etc, etc all stayed the same. It would no doubt still be a Souls game. But the game would still no doubt be a very different kind of game.

Dark Souls is specifically known for its mechanics, though -- there's even a whole subgroup that get assblasted every time someone tries to start a lore thread. In contrast most people remember plot points or interesting tidbits about the world, or hell even their precious waifu from their favorite FF. The percentage of people who play mainly for mechanic exploitation or speedruns or superbosses is vanishingly small compared to everything else.
It would be more analogous to compare your ficitonal turn-based DS to an FF which had turn-based combat and Nomura character designs but no crystals, chocobos, Cid, flashy setpieces, a world-ending plot, etc.
