I can see his point but I don't think it's entirely true. Soldiers are essentially state-authorised mass murderers, but it's not seen in the same way. Sure, soldiers get PTSD and other psychological conditions from warfare, but you still have people who've killed dozens (possibly 100+ like that one US sniper, not the copypasta one) of people and probably wouldn't admit to regretting it. Because it's you or them, at the end of the day.
Likewise, soldiers on a battlefield in a more medieval era like Drakengard would probably be even more desensitized by war, considering the brutality of the era relative to the current time. And no, I'm not saying that grimdark shit like Berserk or whatever is a realistic potrayal, but it would still have been harsher than typical life in the first world these days.

I'd say the biggest problem with D3 is that it's spread way too thin, between the main story, the DLCs, the mangas, the online stories, etc, a lot of characterization for the characters can be missed if you don't go out and hunt down everything you can.

Oh this was just a brief synopsis book with the usual stuff we've always heard, but I also read a book I inherited from my father, "Rise and fall of the Third Reich" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rise_and_Fall_of_the_Third_Reich ) by a journalist who was a correspondent in Germany in the 30s.
What was rather amusing is how it's a book of the times. The guy is clearly not sympathetic to the Nazis at all, bemoans the fates of those opposed to them and explicitly celebrates the more relaxed and cosmopolitan (for that time) culture of Germany in the 20s he was witness to, but then:

Papa Nier was fine, if not bland, Emil was kinda bad, Weiss was shit, Popo/Devo were alright, Yonah was pretty alright, Kaine was fucking god-tier awesome, and all NPCs sounded like shit.
