I think the thing people don't yet understand is that you can have more than one support. The class is called "support" not "heal", the characters fill a fairly broad variety of roles.
A single Mercy's gonna have a hard time keeping the whole team afloat and juggling everyone won't give her time to do much buffing. A duo of supports can sustain pushes really easily, on the other hand.

Well I think his speed buff is appreciable on point objectives, but I just don't get this elitism that comes from Lucio players towards Mercy.
They require different skills and mindsets. Lucio's a healer, but as a Lucio player you're not really thinking about healing. It's just something that happens. You're thinking about how to be a nuisance with your soundwaves and also where you should be positioned at the moment to most effectively benefit your team.
With Mercy, you're thinking about who needs healing, who needs buffing, and when to switch between the two. You're making split-second decisions about who needs what kind of help more at any given moment, and trying to read the situation and manage it, while hopefully not drawing too much fire yourself.
Both require you to be constantly aware of your teammates' locations and current status, but for different reasons.

I treat 99% of the solo queue games I play like they're scrim matches, practicing getting gud with my favorite characters. There's literally no point in trying to win most of the games playing with randoms unless nearly everyone on your team is on point. I love Mercy's pistol, but sometime's it's difficult to know when it's appropriate to use it.
Every second you spend with your pistol out is a second that could have been spent healing someone or buffing. In the time it takes you to realize someone nearby is taking hits and swap to your heal gun, they could already be dead.
Upsets can happen really goddamn fast in this game, and I feel like part of your job as Mercy is to prevent them or at least help your team manage them.
I generally only pull out the pistol when I'm isolated, or to help deal with icewalls or reinhardt barriers.

You need to have a target rich environment for mccree, mei needs to self destruct in a tight space, junkrats can be defused, before it does damage at all, roadhog has kind of a goofy ult that needs to be around pits or ledges or its does only moderate dps, sometimes ultimates can be pretty finicky.
Its just too bad some ultimates really are "press Q for PoTG".
