It's a scam.

I dunno about full confidence but I had enough faith in him to make a good game that I threw down $100

What the fuck are you talking about?

Why do people like the PSP translation and voiceover of SoTN?

Sure, the original PSX release had somewhat chessy-wonky translation but I thought Alucard's voice was top-perfect for him. In the remake it just so bland and uninspiring.

That's it.
It doesn't even look very good.
The most we can realistically expect from this game is new great Castlevania tunes from Michiru.

Calm down, just give them some time. They didn't show anything bad for now so don't be that pessimistic

Been playing Dracula X recently, my first Castlevania you could say. Is Maria "easy mode"? She just wrecks shit, meanwhile i always suck as Richter.

No.
There were a few cancelled Castlevania's games anyway.
>>
>>339792098
>Is Maria "easy mode"?
Sorta, yeah.
>>
>>339792090

Tht wasn't a canceled game, that was a pitch IGA's team's pitch for a new Castlevania game, it was competing with Mercurysteam's pitch, which got chosen.
>>
>>339792098
Basically. Her defense is worse, but she's way easier with the double jump and doves.

Anyone else notice that Marias sprite has blue ribbons, but in cut-scenes they're red?
>>
>>339792251
Well, now i feel kinda bad for playing as her. But that double jump man...
>>
guiz help
did I wind up getting a bootleg copy of Double Pack? I really can't tell, and I only question it because it has a weird issue where the screen goes black for a second whenever I save, and I heard bootlegs have save issues
>>

We all know how well that went, heh.

Though, LoD1 wasn't all that bad. It's a miracle they managed to pull of decent game and absolutely terrible LoD2 is a manifestation of that. Pure luck will get youo nly that far.

>>
>>339792698
All of them are godly, except Harmony of Dissonance. Objectively one of the worst game in series.

I sugegst to start from PoR, then either Com or AoS.
>>
>>339792698

Circle of the Moon and Aria of Sorrow are great imo. Harmony of Dissonance isn'r very good and has ass music compared to the rest of the series but the room decorating side thing is kinda funny
>>
>>339791717
The entire redub was bland and by the books. It felt like a Saturday-morning anime.

The slightly "off" voices and diction in the original fit the game so much more, in my opinion. I also love Alucard's deep voice. You just know that he was supposed to have some pretty-boy Jpop voice, but it works so much better for him.

>>339792374
Either way the game is excellent.

Though, imo, the best classicvania is the X68000 version, ported to the PS1 as Chronicles.

man, the art change for DoS and PoR were soooo bad. OoE wasn't as good as Kojima's (other Kojima) stuff, but it was very nice and a step back in the right direction, before grimdark Western studios (and Konami themselves) fucked the series permanently. Death by erotic violence.

It's admirable to hack balance into the game, but SOTN is a hard beast because it can be broken in so many different ways.

Bloodlines was the first Castlevania game for which Michiru Yamane composed. She went on to compose for SotN and most of the GBA/DS games.

I do. It's the only time I've ever done kickstarter. A lot of it was feeling bad for pirating all of the Castlevania games from symphony of the night to order of ecclesia, I feel like I'm part of the reason why castlevania died like it did. Despite loving all of the games, I've never paid money for any of them. Even back as a kid on the NES I borrowed castlevania 1 and 4 I rented.

So even if it doesn't live up to my expectations, I can at least feel like I've finally contributed something to the series. Kind of, maybe.

I'm sorry.

Let me tell you, the 3DS may play DS games fine, but playing the Mega Man Zero Collection on a normal 3DS hurts my hands after a little bit. I can play it for extended periods of time on my DS Lite just fine, but the 3DS just doesn't feel right in either the D-Pad or the size. I still need to get an XL some time, and i'd probably spring for a N3DSXL in that regard, but I don't know if that'd fix the problems of intense D-Pad controlled platformer games.

>but I thought Alucard's voice was top-perfect for him.

It is. I love it.

Jeremy Blaustein handled the localization. Overall, aside from changing item names, and WHAT IS A MAN the dialogue is pretty good.

>>339799196

It's kind of awkwardly inserted.

The original JP they go on a rather generic good vs. evil argument. Jeremy Blaustein thinks that's kinda lame, so he tried to get the jist of that but while doing something a little different. It still gets the same ideas across. But "What is a Man" is so weird/funny for a reason.

Some of the voice acting is pretty bad too. Dracula is very theatrical and I feel he has the emphasis on the wrong words. Balustein wanted to oversee the voice over recording sessions but couldn't.

The sprite is supposed to convey motion. no look pretty. And even then, I didn't make small tweaks. I only attempted to convey the larger motion. The dev guy will have to clean it up on his own. I was only focused on the animation.
>>

No, no no. Aria is the game to play after Rondo and Symphony. Aria is the plot sequel to Symphony. It's also one of the best.

>>
>>339800413
There are no SNES version.
>>
>>339800413

Snes version can be skipped. It's a weird remix game. It takes the same plot of the PCE game, and then has all new levels. Consider it its own game.

Play the PCE-CD original. Either get a translation version, or just look up what they're saying during cutscenes. There's only like 5.
>>
>>339800413
SNES is a completely different game. Still good, but it's not the same.
PC-Engine has a tl version, and even a dubbed version if you're okay with 20 year old women trying to play 12 year old vampire hunters.
>>
>>339800242

Probably Nintendo honestly, I'd like to have them hand it over to Rare and see what they could do with it. Or give it to IGA since he seems to care about both Classic and Metroid-vanias.

My absolute experimental longshot dream one would be give it to Vanillaware because I would fucking love to see a Metroidvania game with George Kamitani's artstyle.
>>
>>339800428
headbob is fine in my opinion, but that thing on his helmet could be animated to help to covey the movement and direction

>>
>>339800482
>>339800498
Alright, how different is Richter's gameplay between Rondo and SotN?
>>
>>339800613
Same shit. The stages are the difference.
>>
>>339800428
Perhaps. That would be up to dev-guy's preference. I don't like a lot of head bobbing, because it looks too goofy. A realistic knight wouldn't bob his head when running. Cartoon characters do all that head bobbing. Your neck actually does very looking bobbing when you run. Any shifting of the head is the result of your body twisting while pumping your arms, and the slight vibration from the impact of your steps.
>>
>>339800613
Level design mostly since in Rondo it is stages and in SoTN it is one big stage.

Also, he has more movements in SoTN
>>
>>339800521

>Rare

Fuckin shit, I meant Retro
>>
>>339800613

SotN is all about adding extra things for the same of adding extra thing. They were clearly having a lot of fun with the power of the playstation. SotN Richter gains a lot of extra moves that he didn't have in Rondo.

Rondo he just has double back-jump, whipping, and sub-items and item crash.
>>

That's one of those details you can bother with, after you got the chunk of the main animation down.

>Bloodstained is looking like MN9 again

3D was a mistake. It makes the project overly complex and eats up money/time.

They should have made their game 480p and 16:9. 2x the resolution but not enoguh to make it absurdly hard to do 2D.

They said that with MN9 too. I don't buy it. But they blew 4 million on the game and it looks like ass. The bottle-necks of the 3DS port has a lot to do with that though.

I'm looking at amateur JP games, and a lot of them are 480 resolution, and they look pretty good. Purely amateur, so often the spirtes look great, and the backgrounds look bland. With a real budget and a team of several of these guys the game could look phenominal.

Professional 2D artists are scarce and they do cost a lot. Because they are professional and can adopt to generally defined art-style and work together. Most of the amateur stuff is done by 1 man within 2-3 years and the game is generally short and consist of repeatable content.

Bloodstained and MN( were positioned as high-budget and content-rich quality game. if they'd have to hire 2D artist it would be people with some name and portfolio. 3D was literally cheaper and easier.

Doesn ot mean better, though.

These posts are bothering me.
1. Bloodstained's graphics are not even comparable to MN9's. Bloodstained looks very good thus far. Lots of detail, great character model, good lighting. Even in it's early stages, it's putting release ready MN9 to shame visually.

2. MN9 didn't spend money on toys and an anime. They made partners. The partners latched on, because they saw the potential for money in the future. The partners aren't charging Comcept cash to make an anime and toys.

3. Pixel art is strange in that when the resolution is small, then it's relatively easy to develop for, and people like it on small screens. But when the resolution is large, that pixel art get exponentially more difficult to develop, and people don't like looking at it on big screens. Developing in "480", it's a good solution, because the image will still have to be scale up. Jaggies would still be visible. So the animators have to work harder creating larger sprites that the players won't even appreciate.

Besides, because they want to make this game a major release, 3D is expected by today's standards. Castlevania got away with pixels on handhelds. But even handhelds are putting out mostly 3D games. The standard is leaving pixel games behind.

Also, 3D will make alternate costumes and other cosmetics infinitely easier. Everyone wants bonus content. Everyone wants to dress up their waifus. They can't come out with three dozen new dresses for Miriam if they had to draw every new one in sprite form.
>>

I've done it as Shanoa, but only because I know I'm crap and use Ancient Armor as my crutch rather than the Robe Decollete.

Years back I cost my entire team the round because I sucked so bad and didn't know how to dodge the boss. The JP players tried their hardest and kept using their waters of life on me.

I've gotten much better, but I still regret not quitting the game so they could have gotten a win on the boss without me dragging them down as a filthy US casual.

Oh, and the elevator skip trick. Never mastered it.

Also IGA admitted pretty early on with 3D it will be easier to reuse and retrofit assets if they end up making a sequel or it becomes a series somehow.

>3. Pixel art is strange in that when the resolution is small, then it's relatively easy to develop for, and people like it on small screens. The thing though, is that no one ultimately has a big problem playing GBA, PS1, or DS games on emulators. That's where you're doing just that. No one can quite agree on the scaling methods, but there's a big audience for playing these games on hd screens.
>>
>>339802374
I'd have to remember how to do it now but I had the trick down pat as Soma since it was way easier as him. I could do it with the other characters too but it required a lot of luck/ trial and error.

I did not see anything you can call "good so far". All i saw is random assets. The same shit MN( pulled off - random assets and artwork with updates, nothing concrete.

>3. Pixel art is strange in that when the resolution is small, then it's relatively easy to develop for, and people like it on small screens. There is also difference between pixel art and 2D art.
Example: SoTN vs DUST: An Elysian Tale.

>Besides, because they want to make this game a major release, 3D is expected by today's standards. Castlevania got away with pixels on handhelds. But even handhelds are putting out mostly 3D games. The standard is leaving pixel games behind.
You can make a very beautiful 2D nowadays that can not just be on par with 3D but overshadow it.

>You can make a very beautiful 2D nowadays that can not just be on par with 3D but overshadow it.
Unfortunately no you can't. It only appeals to a certain niche. While for example KoF13 is arguably a much nicer looking game, to the average 'gamer' it is inferior graphically to SF4 because SF4 is properly 3D. It's retarded I agree, but people in general look down on 2D art, ignorant of how much more work and effort goes into it than models.

There's a pretty good article on it here

KoF13 is okay looking, but nothing great. It uses the drawn 2D imported to the game method, rather than pixel art. It also has some LAME flame effects. KoF14 is a much better looking game.

He said Toru Hagihara was a better programmer than him and he praised him a good bit. Also he was pretty involved in a lot of the later CV games development despite being listed as Executive Producer. It was cool watching him play SotN and give some details about different development things about the game I never knew, like who the person singing Prayer was or what parts of the games he and others programmed. This dude is actually pretty dedicated to CV, he isn't just trying to fucking hop on some mony train like Inafune was.

MN's assets always looked like shit though. At least the assets they've shown for Bloodstained look great. Miriam's model is impeccable. And the game is already resembling Castlevania in motion as well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLpMwEAiw7Q

>There is also difference between pixel art and 2D art.
Right. And if you're going to draw in 2D, then you might as well go HD, no? Well, I suppose you could stick to 480p anyway, but the difference in work is mostly negligible. You're really just gimping yourself. You would take the same strokes in a lower resolution, as you would in a higher resolution. A brush stroke is a brush stroke. You might find yourself doing more cleaning though.

Also notice how much warping and tweening DUST uses. It's an animation technique that is convenient, but ultimately cheaper looking. So it's not even the best that 2D could look. IMO, tweened&warped animation is on par as 2.5D.

>You can make a very beautiful 2D nowadays that can not just be on par with 3D but overshadow it.
Not without either a lot of cash, a lot of talent, and a lot of sacrifice.

What I found interesting was in that little stream he did he played a bunch of western takes on metroidvanias that he had never played before like Rogue Legacy, he seemed really interested in the way that game procedurally generated the rooms and how that worked while he was playing, and low and behold soonafter 'roguelike mode' appeared on his stretch goals, shows some enthusiasm at least.

Mostly, just another fun way to display what you're seeing, assuming naive VR support. I like the feeling of size and depth it gives. For example, imagine if you had an intricate diorama in real life that you could magically control. It's sort of like playing with a toy set.

>>339814230
That would be cooler. But just saying, too, that naive VR support wouldn't hurt especially if it's as easy as a few checkboxes and some playtesting to make sure it works in the case of Bloodstained.

There were a few on the kickstarter comments page.

Who were greatly outnumbered by people praising everything about what they showed, but this is /v/, so screencap compilations were made and it was blown way out of proportion.
>>
>>339821842
>people defend LoS
I can understand defending the first one, and maybe the 3DS one. Those two were alright in terms of actually getting a decent atmosphere down. They never quite felt like a Castlevania, to me at least, but they managed to get a good semi-horror/fantasy atmosphere down, which works for a Castlevania rip-off.
But I will not believe there's anyone who would defend LoS2. That was a mess. Dracula having no intimidation behind his words, being weak as shit even end-game, Satan's boss fight being dull, the castle segments were horrible, bad stealth segments, and a good Belmont being introduced only to be killed off less than an hour after he shows up. Also, that ridiculous blood golem with Gabriel's face.

The fucking stealth section in the garden was the one that pissed me off the most. It served no fucking purpose since he knew you were in there for one and you end up fighting him not even a minute later after you're done with it.

Wow literally three people on a massive kickstarter. Even on tumblr there's mostly just lots of fanart of her.
>>
>>339826410
They are all terrible and should never have been made.
I hate how everything has to be a big budget epic nowadays, Castlevania was turning in a profit with the low budget handled release and they were better games than the LoS trilogy ever was.
I don't even know why Kojima got appointed as a producer for LoS since he did absolutely nothing for it, I doubt it was his idea since Igarashi defended him when he got fired from konami.
Still, I hope whoever came up with it is jobless now.
