Maybe I'm a little stupid, but I always get lost at some point during a castlevania game. So I just end up re-tracing damn near the entire castle, killing enemies or dodging them as I go. And I love it. It's not wasted time, because I'm getting levels/souls. And it doesn't feel like grinding, because I'm making fast progress through the rooms, even if it's a circular path.
In other games, the "battles" take too long and slows everything down, or the layout isn't complex enough to "get lost" in. But castlevania hits that sweet spot and I love it a lot.

Make it seemless; try to minimize apparent loading, but don't go full American Wasteland with it with hallways unless it's for different zones. Make it all one world. Not really, Dark Souls may have pretty good intertwining level design, but it doesn't have anything remotely similar to the mechanical progression of metroidvania's where by the end your moveset and movement abilities are hugely expanded over what you had access to at the beginning.
