CIV IV is shit compared to it's predecessor. So far, the fourth game, with it's expansions, is by far the best game they've made in th series. The mechanics hasn't yet been simplified to make the game more accessible, and the AI can actually handle combat reasonably well.

i think the artstyle is meant to help new players distinguish the geographical features from each other. bright colours and simple shapes are also easier to make while still conveying the same message
there is literally nothing wrong with this kind of artstyle if it means we'll have more interaction with the terrain. if anything it helps keep things somewhat legible when the whole map is covered with cities and armies
modders will also have a very easy time imitating that artstyle so new content will spring up faster. stop freaking out before we even get to see how the gameplay works
>>337305476

>Instead, Firaxis has created the concept of 12 different types of color-coded Districts (five or six of which will be available from the beginning) that exist on their own tiles on the map, outside the city center and will house specific building types. “A science district, which we’ve called a campus, once constructed will allow you to put a library and a university and a research lab out on that tile. And now your city is sort of specialized toward being a really good science city,” says Beach.

This. Everything being monotone and blending together is going to make distinguishing terrain and improvements a clusterfuck.
If what they're saying about the terrain being more interactive and impactful on the gameplay is true, this kind of aesthetic is kind of necessary.

I think DLC that are focused on specific time periods are fine.
Industrial and Modern age are always difficult to make interesting in vanilla and usually they do a good job of adding what needs to be added.
However, Religion needs to be Day 1. It won't be, with the excuse being they "didn't have time," but fuck that.
Also oceans need to be way more interesting, not some "you can't improve these tiles at all" empty space.

I agree but the problem with 1UPT is that the AI has no idea what the fuck to do with em. At least stacks of doom gave the AI a fighting chance. Conquest victories in 5, even on the highest level, were a joke.

>"OMG WHERE'S THE PROOF???"
>shows proof
>"THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!!"
Then don't pre-order it like a retard. Wait and see if the gameplay actually implements these features in way that satisfies you.
Do you babies need to be spoonfed everything?
>>337309579
Steam refunds are a thing. Too bad early launch hype and people not wanting to go against groupthink are way, way more powerful than 2 hour refunds.
>>337304705
I need more of these memes.
>>337302063
I'd rather see Chandragupta Maurya as India's leader, he was truly a Great Man. A conqueror who laid the foundations of a real empire, not just someone like Alexander or Genghis Khan who built an incredible empire that immediately crumbled upon their death.
>>337309464
Why the fuck is everybody judging the gameplay entirely based on the art style?
>>337301280
People are interpreting far too much from 3 screenshots. Mind you they were dumb to release just a pointless cinematic trailer and 3 screenshots.
>>337309624
>do you need to be spoon-fed what a product people ask money from you to provide will have?
Yes.
I get your hyped, but you also come across as retarded.
>>337301280
>We want the P2W mobile audience.
So tell me anons, how does Civ 4 compare to Civ 3 cause I might give it a shot if its similar.
>>337309747
The gameplay can't be talked about outside of the brief mentions of stuff, most of which sounds bad but isn't all inclusive.
Nothing about this sounds good.
I need good things to be announced to demonstrate hype or excitement. That's just how I am.
>Get home from a long day at work
>Downing zzzquil to get to bed early
>Open Steam
>See Civ6
>Hype instantly shoots through the roof
>Check the pictures
>That art direction
I think that was the quickest I've ever had my hype killed.
Looks like complete garbage.
>>337309747
They're not you fucking dope. There is nothing to talk about but the graphics so people are talking about the graphics.
>>337305728
I honestly hate Civ Vs graphics. Hard to see anything at all. Just looking at it gives me a headache.
>>337309976
Civ 5's graphics got old on me pretty quick as well.
I don't know how to feel about the art directions
but all i hope for is just multiple leaders for each Civ
>>337309773
You're coming off as full mongoloid.
Posting sources isn't "hype", it's showing the available information.
If you don't like it, don't attack the person doing the Googling that you were too lazy to do.
>>337309960
There have been at least two major gamechanging features announced that aren't getting half as much discussion as "muh clash of clans art"

Too bad it's a half-assed measure.
They should have added attrition and full stacks. Could have made techs/promotions around increasing the limit and reducing attrition as well.
>>337301494
>>337310219
I hate it too but the water looks nice.
>>337304728
stellaris is just as much of a disappointment as beyond earth
>>337309887
I feel it really kills the mood of the whole "epic timespan of human civilization" thing. The promo art looks pretty good, and I imagine the music will be along the same lines as V and IV. These visuals look like they'll be pretty jarring in that respect.
This just looks so terrible I can't help but believe it was some dumb executive decision to make it look more appealing for tablet users.
>>337306018
This is terrible. I'm all for having better terrain and it blending in more, but that doesn't mean you have to make the game look like a cartoon or some cheap mobile shit.
>>337310152
Because "NONE OR ALMOST NONE OF IT WILL BE IN THE GAME, ALL OF IT WILL BE STREAMLINED AND ABSENT" is an appropriate reaction to being told by the guy who led the G&K and BNW expansions that the features from those things will be implemented in some form in an entirely new game.
I get that you're baiting but maybe put more effort in next time.
>>337303576
I played the console version and loved the aesthetic
>no luxury resource specific unit/buildings
Why don't they just do this. I want to become a trade baron.
>>337310458
The appropriate reaction is to rub two brain cells together and realize they will oversell the quantity, being that they want your cash and are not your buds.
>>337304705
This is what looked off to me. Looks just like it'd fit on mobile.
>>337310334
No way, that delivers a much better product. It's not perfect but it's got a good core. BE has no good core. Adding shit wouldn't fix its problems.
I'm not going to buy it until it has 2 expansions, I learned my lesson with beyond earth.
>>337306907
>Game is called Civilization
>Is censored because it could offend uncivilized people
>>337310507
Then it will be fairly easy to see it when the Let's Plays and other player reviews on Steam start showing up.
That's assuming people actually wait for reviewers that play the whole game through, and not just hype it themselves like you clowns did for Stellaris.
>>337310603
That game could have 100 expansions and be shit.
Civ V would be a better example of your point.
>>337304705
You made my heart skip a beat. Thank god that's not real.
>>337310458
>The guy writing in all caps is not the one baiting.

>>337310726
No shit. My only point is that at this stage anybody responding with glee is a little dense.
>>337310336

>>337310807

>>337310592
its an extremely feature poor and bland game, you can see exactly where features from EU4 and Vicky 2 have been torn out so they can be sold as DLC. There's no way at all to win a war against a more powerful enemy, and wars against weaker empires are so simple its not even satisfying. The ai's will do literally nothing and never fucking declare war on you to break up the monotony. The lategame crises were supposed to be these big things that completely reorder the status quo and force you to work together with your old enemies but its nothing like that at all, oh some literally who empire on the other side of the galaxy had a robot revolt and their rival invaded and put it down. Wasn't that amazing? Sure hope you don't mind continuing to do nothing.

Reading is hard huh?
>>337311360
What do you mean? Are you talking about armies? Because boats are units.
>>337311219
I wasn't offering one, but here you are.
Civ V was a buggy mess on launch, lacked features that do make it a competent (if still severely lacking) 4X, Naval AI was absolutely fucked, land AI is still sort of fucked but was improved with BNW, and the expanded tourism and spy mechanics flesh it out.
Brave New World's core is boring SMAC. The leaders are awful, the design around the whole game is torn from Civ V. BE is a modification of Civ V and it's a smaller game because of it. In the days of Civ IV, BE would be a literal mod some small group worked on, not a new Firaxis game.
Fall From Heaven and its mod lineup are a much broader, more interesting and content-rich series of mods than BE, with its expanded content.
Looks like they borrow a lot from the endless legend.

There's nothing wrong with getting hyped and being optimistic. Just don't let that influence your decision to get the game unless you're sure it's exactly what you want.

It's unlikely but they could easily use Denuvo.

We know by this point it's uncrackable at least for a 6 month period, possibly longer, the oldest uncrackable stuff is from Sept. 2015.

>>337311732
The graphics are one thing.
Gameplay will be another.
It remains to be seen what type of shit show that will be. All we have now is mostly guessing.
Civ V made it worse, I find it difficult to believe VI will improve it in that regard.
If miraculously it does somehow, the graphics will be an afterthought.
Believing that is silly though.
>>337311689
I honestly was hoping for something like this,
>>337311732
>"I have no idea what resolutions and textures are" - the post
Yeah because those games supported textures that are low, something a fucking ARM of god forbid in the future a x86 mobile CPU could handle easily. Civ is PC GAME, meaning it should have graphics that would be on tier with what a PC could comfortably render without over taxing a relatively moderate setup.
The mobile market was a mistake.

>>337313891
Why? Anybody's guess. Probably so other platforms can handle it better, also to appeal to casual players.
Can't think of anything else that makes any sense.
I'm actually reluctantly hyped. Didn't really want a new Civ game, since new installments tend to feel like a downgrade until 3 years down the line when at least 2 expansions are out. But the increased focus on tiles actually looks really exciting, and if they're really keeping religion, trade routes and tourism, then it might actually be a better experience than Civ5 right out of the box.
But for now, I'm gonna hold back my excitement until trying it, the info we got so far isn't really enough to tell whether the new features will add that much to gameplay.
>>337313785
Shit seems to have been made by two completely different people who didn't communicate at all. This can't have been anything but executives meddling, hoping to lure in casuals. They've been talking about trying to tap into the iOS/tablet market since XCOM EU. Fuck I wish they'd just leave that shit for spin-offs like Civ Rev.
>>337309730
But Genghis Khan actually plan out his legacy after his dead. He got all of his son to unified and follow under 1 chosen heir. And that heir continue his conquest from the middle East all the way to Europe. Paradox games used to be broken to the point of being unplayable until the second expansion
The sense of scale with that art is completely fucked, even more so than usual in a Civ game. Before you could at least pretend a continent was an actual large landmass, now it's just going to look like a little MMO island.
I get that units and cities are large and exaggerated for gameplay purposes (that's the way it's always been) but for fuck's sake you don't need to scale up the terrain alongside them.
>>337314465
They ported it to iPad and when they announced BE they stated those players were their intended audience too - which really made no sense.
>>337314573
I've been playing paradox games since hearts of iron 1 (ONE) and while you're right that they're often rough around the edges at first they never felt like a marked step backwards from the previous games
Stellaris changed that. No trade, no espionage, barely any diplomacy at all, the planet cap is ridiculously low meaning you have to give all your colonies to the ai which leaves you with nothing to fucking do because apparently being bored out of your mind is better than having to micromanage.

but pretty good post on why "Stacks of Doom" aren't bad at all
>My last point goes back to what i said first. Civ4 in particular was not AT ALL about only stacking, even though production superiority was more important than tactical superiority (since even the AI understood how to play the game at a basic level). First, there was the rock/paper/scissor-design of the units, meaning you always had to balance your armies. Second, there were siege weapons that could be sacrificed to reduce the hp of all units on a tile, thirdly, there were the possibility of going around your enemies to take out vital resources, citites or just kill workers (which the AI used to great effect). This fourthly, meant that you most of the time had to spread out your army to defend your border, which in itself is completely different than the cliche of "stacks of doom". I could go on about this. But the point is that combat is way deeper in civ4 than in civ5.
>>337316219
I really hope Ed Beach gets fired over this graphics controversy.
And Firaxis puts the BE team in charge.
Post em
I hope we can either mod out the tile sets to something that looks nicer or just force Fixaxis to fix it by complaining.
It looks like a Civ Rev game. Part of what made Civilization feel so good was the fairly serious presentation that made it closer to just a grand board game.
I'll stick to V, IV, and Endless Legend for a year at least anyway.

Yeah they went overboard with eliminating Stacks of Doom, making it so every tile was taken by a unit was also an ugly clusterfuck.
I really loved how Siege Units had range in Civ V making army ships insanely useful and fun. I think buffing range is enough encouragement to spread out your stacks.
>>337316749
>production superiority was more important than tactical superiority
Really my main gripe with 1UPT is this. You should bot be able to so easily defeat much larger army by just sitting on impenetrable chokepoint. A small country cannot content with a great, said Mencius. I believe Sulla's review also mention false dichotomy between "wide" and "tall".

It's possible to make something readable without making it look like a horribly-produced mobile game. Hell, even just tweaking the colors in the shots they provided makes a big difference.

Clashing colors is kind of the point in this case.
These buildings need to be easily identifiable because targeting them specifically will be part of the game.

>>337320984
>buildings need to be easily identifiable because targeting them specifically will be part of the game.
If that was the objective all along there could have been a million different ways of doing it instead of shitting out this abortion of an art style.
Really, using the excuse "to make things more identifiable" is fucking retarded, using the hud elements, lighting effects, or a camera zoom weren't viable solutions because...?
I mean fucking come on, everything about this is a mess, look at the swordsman's weapon, that looks laughably bad. For a game that bills itself as respecting historical achievements with that le epic release trailer it sure takes a big steamy shit over history with this WoW tier trite shit. There is literally no justification for any of this.

>>337326328
Literally what I just said, you stupid fuck.
>>337324268
It's difficult to reduce to "clashing" or "not clashing" but the color choice is definitely all over the place; the biggest example in the image I posted is an abundance of saturated yellow-green which almost never pairs well and borders mountains and water that is closer to indigo/purple than cyan and thus especially clashes. The buildings and roads are closer to pure yellow than tan/gold and thus blend in to the landscape making the whole thing look like pea soup; various objects shift from relying on color contrast to value contrast, the trees being an obvious example; in fact overall I lowered the value contrast and added hue gradation to make up for it. Also a few buildings have their own weirdness going on, like the extreme saturation of the blue roofs on the buildings near the mountain range. I turned that down almost 30% and it still contrasts just fine instead of "popping" like the red/green pattern I posted.
>trailer was a big name actor voice over with a generic as shit 'humans are the best of the best' with generic cultural images
I had to go watch the DoW3 trailer multiple times again just to get that god awful civ 6 trailer out of my head
LOL nice graphics "pc master race" kkek

Someone should tell Firaxis there's a middle ground.

I know it's a bait post but you gotta do it in a less obvious way man.

>DoW3 trailer
Ugh. Just when I'm about to feel even the slightest bit moved, dumb gangly goblins show up and ruin the whole presentation.
Orks as a race would look better without those little shits.
>>337326539
Civ 4 and 5 both had excellent artstyles, what the fuck are you smoking
>>337320551
your adjustments don't make it look any better
I think the worst thing about the graphics is how simplistic the terrain is, it looks like a child's playmat no matter what color it is and the TF2-style cliffs around the shore look awful
>>337319154
have you played city skylines with nighttime enabled? Eventually you just turn it off because you can't see what the fuck you're doing. Unless you want cartoony dark-blue but you can still see everything style nights

I thought it wascute

I didn't need these feels this late in the night

Steam forums are more cancerous than reddit at this point.

Maybe we have different definitions of "excellent" but for me Civ 4 looked cartoony as fuck (see tanks and leaders) while Civ 5 terrain only had slight shade differences that made strat view and blown up resource icons basically a must.
Didn't care for either of them, other games have pulled off terrain and structures way better.
And now it looks like they've swung back around again.
Take out your nostalgia dildo.
>>337327180
it's not like you can have a factual discussion about what looks better, unless you want to misinterpret some color theory
>>337327026
I wouldn't mind that. Especially if it means seeing some night light effects.
>>337327250
I've never had any problems telling resources from each other, until you get to late-game and need to find the 1 patch of coal in your empire, and antiquity sites I guess
>>337302703
I like that art style a lot.
It's much more cleaner than the previous games and maybe it won't look as cluttered by the end game.
>>337301582
I think a civilization game would work great on mobile. There's no rush or need for precise controls. You can do a couple of moves, save and come back to it later. And you'd finally have a real game on your phone instead of bowling simulators in flash.
>>337327551
Could you imagine how long Civ V's late game turns would take on mobile?

Thanks doc.
I don't care about the graphic or any such trivial things. All I demand is an AI that know how to play the fucking game. The 1UPT information is making me feel a bit worried.

We both know that good AI isn't going to fucking happen, anon

Fixed up a few things (accidentally left out India from Civ IV)
Interestingly, in checking dates I learned of the Playstation/Saturn releases of Civilization 1 in 1996 (JP exclusive). Graphical update makes it look more like Civilization 2, with some movies added in. It keeps the SNES civ list, though - Zulu is dropped for Japan.
But the SNES release was in 1991, same as the DOS release, so personally I'm still counting Japan from the beginning.
This puts the "standard" vanilla civ list as:
America
Aztecs
China
Egypt
England
France
Germany
Greece
India
Japan
Rome
With a special mention to Persia, which has been a vanilla civ since Civ 2.
I haven't seen anything to indicate that any of those will be left out for Civ 6, either.
As point of interest, the number of civs in each vanilla game release:
Civ 1: 14 civs (Japan and Zulu are mutually exclusive)
Civ 2: 21 civs
Civ 3: 16 civs (31 with expansions)
Civ 4: 18 civs (34 with expansions)
Civ 5: 18 civs (43 with expansions and DLC)
If we assume the first 12 are in, and that they keep the trend of the past 2 games, there are still 6 civilization slots. Typically at least one for each of a Native North American tribe and an African kingdom, plus the decent possibility of Arabia again for more middle east representation.

Can't wait for a mod like Civ 5 which scales the units down.
>a ship the size of a fucking city
>swordsmen larger than fucking tanks
I hate the oversized units in every game, it looks retarded
>>337330842
Don't ever play Risk.
I'm sure that would blow your fucking mind.
>>337331127
Probably would. My autism just can't handle the fact that there's massive units.
I don't expect them to be scaled down to actual size but something like pic related would be great
>>337310325
ok IGN
>>337301280
So it's still 1UPT, but you can combine up to 3 military units of a type, can link a military and a civlian unit, and can attach support units like battering rams or AA guns.
Two individual units are stronger overall than one combined corps of two, but the latter hits harder and soaks more damage than either individual.
