Can anyone tell me why this game is considered the best in the series?
>worse level design than the orginal
>unbalanced weapons
>shitty flying sections
>if you don't buy the overpriced armor, you'll get absolutely raped in the later levels
>THAT FUCKING BOSS BATTLE. YOU KNOW WHICH ONE I'M TALKING ABOUT.
I mean, it's not a bad game, not at all, it's very good, but I would still play the original over this. And that game didn't even strafing.
I thought Up Your Arsenal was considered the best
It's admired for how many gameplay changes happened between rnc and GC
Sure UYA is better but it'll be viewed as how well insomniac really revolutionized the gameplay and slowly improved upon it in later games.
>>336025804
>>336025931
I prefer deadlocked honestly
>>336026023
this tbqh
>>336026023
Gotta love how much insomniac told everyone they hated the angry ratchet design from the 1st one and yet deadlocked exists
I guess angry ratchet =\= edgy ratchet
>>336025804
you could strafe with the hover feature in the first one
>>336026008
This, the addition of strafing alone made GC an extreme improvement over 1. It pretty much set the standard for all of its sequels.
Going Commando was a massive improvement from the first game, and everyone liked the new weapons. Levels design was fine and the new areas looked nice.
UYA is objectively the best, but I hate the orange UI.
>>336025804
I think UYA is the best one personally.
I wonder if Insomniac is gonna reboot all the ps2 games

>shitty flying sections
i find the controls better than SF Zero's, and the gameplay isn't meant to be godlike. it's a mini game.
>if you don't buy the overpriced armor, you'll get absolutely raped in the later levels
I beat the whole game in tier 2 armor. If you're a shitter you can use the shield charger.
>THAT FUCKING BOSS BATTLE. YOU KNOW WHICH ONE I'M TALKING ABOUT.
No, I really don't, but even negative attention is attention, right, not-Sony contracted shill?
>More than 1 Ratchet thread up on /v/ at any given time since the movie promotions started appearing
How's working the weekends?
>>336027338
>No, I really don't
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the giant robo dude battle.
>>336026614
It's fun, however it's nothing like the others. I went to it straight after UYA and hated it, but I liked it after a while. >>336026739 is completely right also.
While Deadlock isn't viewed as the best game
Definitely one of the best spinoffs created of all time
A perfect example of how spinoffs should be made.
>>336025931
It always comes down to these two.
They are my favorite two so I don't mind.
>>336028034
I think deadlock was an experiment to see how high they could crank up the difficulty and firefights because the games after that have been slightly harder than the previous with ItN and RnC boot getting even harder.
>>336027338
>subjective
I guess.
>unbalanced weapons
I guess that's okay too.
>i find the controls better than SF Zero's, and the gameplay isn't meant to be godlike. it's a mini game.
That is where I call bullshit. It's not a minigame, you HAVE to beat those levels to progress the story. It's literally just get shot, wait until the enemy flies right into your fire range and kill them. And you do this 20 times per level. It just fucking sucks man. At lease Star Fox Zero had alright level design.
>No, I really don't, but even negative attention is attention, right, not-Sony contracted shill?
are you serious dude
>More than 1 Ratchet thread up on /v/ at any given time since the movie promotions started appearing
I bought the original trilogy on PSN, played the WHOLE Future series and played fucking Size Matters and enjoyed it. I love Ratchet and Clank, man. Fuck off with your console wars shit.
>>336027338
>in a single player game = fun
What
> Worse level design than 1
Really? I consider 1&2's level design to be more or less equal. Both have at least 2 paths on all bar 1-2 planets, both generally loop back around, both had a good balance of combat and platfroming/puzzles (but 2 made combat much better). 1 probably had more memorable levels, but that's just virtue of being the first, 2 had tons of great ones as well.
> Unbalanced weapons
I'll take "useless after a point in the game" over "useless 100% of the game by virtue of being useless from a design, not stat perspective". 1 had so many weapons no-one used, ever (every time I replay it I'm shocked to find the Drone Device is a thing because I forget it exists every time). Insomniac made sure to make everything mechanically viable, and encouraged upgrading and buying new stuff. It wasn't perfectly balanced, but by End-game "Ultra" weapons were all balanced again, some weapons just had a bout of uselessness mid-late game on first playthrough.
> Shitty flying sections
Best flying sections in the series. I loved these things.
> If you don't buy armour you die easy
WOOOOOOOOOW! Armour isn't done right in any of the Insomniac games, Size Matters had it perfect. But it's not that big of a deal and certainly not unique to GC, unless you mean to say 1 or Deaslocke are your favourite.
> That boss
What's wrong with it? I beat it without using the turrets as a kid because it was such a cool fight wasted on easy-mode turret bullshit. I fought that mech with my weapons and it was intense. Nothing wrong with the fight.
Going Commsndo's only issues are the Final boss was super lame, the Ice Planet made by one guy in a few days and the story kinda drags in some places.
It's definetly my favourite, it fixed the gameplay issues of the first, introduced almost all the mechanics that became series trademarks (Collectathon planets, arena's, optional extra races/fights for money, weapon and health leveling etc....). All while keeping the special charm and atmosphere.
>>336028847
I think what he's trying to say is, if you already completed the game and play NG+, it's fun to just fuck around with overpowered weapons. And while I agree, it does get boring very quick.
>>336025804
>unbalanced weapons
They're actually balanced pretty good in challenge mode
>>336026182

I still prefer GC. UYA strayed too far from actual platforming for my tastes and some weapons I just never used (plasma coil, infector)
Never played this series but kinda got interest in the Vita collection. What is their average length and how is the replay value?

>>336030623

>>336030515
Nothings better than a hidden bottle of vodka and vidya gaems anon
>>336030341
The Vita ports aren't great, the performance is pretty disappointing compared to PS3 or even PS2. That said, it's far superior to e.g. the Jak collection, still playable.
I'd recommend getting it on either of those platforms.
They last each around 10 hours, but starting with 2 there's a lot of replay value thanks to new game+.
You guys think RnC will die out like other long franchises, or did the movie and new game breathe air back into the series.
>>336029437
Crack in Time had cool space exploration, seamlessly landing on moons and stuff, but the combat was really lackluster.
It was also on a 2D plane, so it was more like boat combat with a space background than actual space dog fights. GC gave you a large 3D space to work with and you could end up fighting at any angle, like actual space.
ACiT style exploration with GC flying would be cool, but probably end up really disorientating and frustrating for the player.
>tfw probably the only person who thinks Tools of Destruction is the best game in the series

The Ratchet games are some of the worst emulated.
You must use software mode, which requires an extremely powerful CPU and ends up being no better than playing on a PS2.
Hardware mode has broken textures everywhere.
>>336031530
Forgot to mention...

Agree with the unbalanced weapons, some of them get completely useless later in the game unless you shoot out half of their ammo.
Also, what's up with the shitty health bar? You still die in 4 or so hits most of the time, was it really necessary to change it?
>>336031838
Holy shit, that looks absolutely awful. Why does it look like that?
>>336032268
I never bothered with the upgrades. I didn't want to waste my bolts on them.
I am honestly worried for the series' future
I want to see the lombaxes, I want another villain that's not nefarious. If they have to keep making reboots so a sequel can be well though out I'd be okay.

>>336032525
Custom mipmaps.
Basically Ratchet and Clank is one of the few games that took advantage of a feature of the PS2's GPU that few other developers used because of tight memory constraints (4MB of VRAM). It makes things run significantly faster and stops "shimmering" textures at low resolutions though.
When PCSX2 was designed, so few games utilized the feature that it made things a lot simpler and faster to ignore it. Now their graphics driver is so titanic that adding the feature at this stage would require a major rewrite.
You know, i remember clocking at least the first 2 games in the same day as a kid.
like 4 hours each.
i also remember waking up at 10, starting UYA for the 50th time and finishing it by 2.
are the games as short as im remembering or was childhood me some sort of autist speed runner
>>336033227
I swear I got through Challenge mode like 20 times.
After that you can beat it in just a couple hours.
>>336033061
>so few devs actually made use of the ps2's GPU features that PCSX2 ignored it.
makes me sad Tbh pham
>>336032747
It was a good thing, cause its better to have reached the apex and then fall down than never to have reached it at all.
Lets face it, Ratchet ain't getting better that Crack in time ever, so lets remember the games that lead up to it instead of those after it.
>>336033409
It's also the reason Ace Combat has fucked up ground textures.
The problem with emulators is that people want them to work today, and not on computers 10 years in the future. They also generally only care about popular games. So they design emulators around speedhacks and you end up with clusterfucks like N64 emulation.
>>336025804

i think the core gameplay, weapons and movement are much better than in the first game, and i had a lot of fun in the arena modes, flying sections and racing sections. i also really enjoyed being able to level up weapons
i did not enjoy the third game as much, because it felt like the focus went from being an action-platformer to more of a straight third-person-shooter and those aren't really my thing. the second strikes the best balance

Can't really say anything about the level designs from a mechanical standpoint but from an artistic view a lot of them were fucking concept art tier & some of the best in the series - Endako, Feltzin, Siberius, Todano, Boldan, Gorn, the list goes on (although they chose forgettable names; had to look most of them up)

Honestly I kind of hope they just take a break from this series. It's great but they've been putting out so many games since the original debutedthat and I fucking hate neo-Insomniac. Michael Bross, TJ Fixman and whoever was the retard at IG saying that 60FPS doesn't matter anymore need to fuck off

>>336031771
Go to Rilgar and turn on the hologuise before speaking to the racing girl. You'll be able to walk on the track and break crates which respawn instantly the moment they get off screen. If you have the taunter you can use that to break crates off screen and since they respawn instantly you'll just keep on breaking them and getting bolts. Try doing it under that elevated platform with the wall of crates on it, during a race you normally jump through it.

I remember desperately trying to beat the impossible challenge at the arena, it took me over 10 tries at least, gruelingly trying to defend myself in the last few stages
Now I completed it on second try, wew lad. wasnt even hard.
same with rachet and clank 1, i defeated chairman drek on the third try, and not because the combat was hard but because i fucked up the slingshot jumps and fell to the abyss.

I liked how in UYA as you upgraded your weapons they'd get parts added and things added to their behaviors before the big V5 upgrade.
Like the N60, the game's blaster, for example. One level it might get a scope on top, next a guard for Ratchet's fingers in front of the handle. And the shots would change to, at first they're just shots, then they bounce from enemy to enemy, then they shock enemies, etc.
It was a little touch but it really helped you feel like you were getting more powerful as you leveled up weapons. Wish they would do something like that again but I know they won't because it'd require making more than two models per weapon.

Nah, 2 is definitely the best, it was my least favourite for ages then I went back and did the original trilogy back to back. Loved 1 and 2 much more than I remembered, 3 was always my favourite and I came out of it severely disappointed. 2 had an excellent difficulty curve, some really neat level design (looking at you Silver City), a really sleek aesthetic for everything and introduced lots of neat shit that became constants in every game afterwards.

>Nexus Zurkon: Upgrades to have Zurkon, Zurkon Jr and Mrs Zurkon

mrs zurkon being a boss was not a good excuse for that either.

RY3NO
Not only does the name not make any sense, but they made the same fucking mistake they made with the lava gun, immediately after they learned their lesson about what went wrong with the lava gun.
I didn't want another fucking zodiac you cumchuggers, I wanted to run around shooting insane amounts of missiles at everything. One of them is visceral and powerful and fun as missiles fly around and impact shit, the other one is 'press X to make everything disappear'.

I don't even know what Ratchet did that everyone calls edgy in Deadlocked? He was never really angry at anyone except Ace, and that's because he considered Ace a traitor at first, and because he shot Al later. he seemed to take pretty well to being kidnapped and put in The Running Man. Didn't even get angry at Vox, just called him an idiot if he thought Ratchet would ever kill other heroes for fame and fortune.

Man, I'd love a Nefarious spin off where the whole goal is conquering a galaxy. Shit, maybe throw in elements of base/boss building where you can create your own super evil lair and giant mechs. And, if I can be extremely unrealistic and silly for one moment, the next Ratchet game involves taking down Nefarious and his new evil empire, and it reads save files to implement some of the things you created, like your personal giant mech from the Nefarious game is now a boss in the Ratchet one. Unrealistic and would never happen, but I just think being able to create some massive powerhouse and then have it turned on you would be great.

It was a shocker when you could do that.
Anyone got R&C artwork? Always liked concept art and sketches.
>>336061565
I could have sworn it was a vendor only ammo.
>>336061542
Next you're going to tell me the Spiderbots are useless because they don't kill everything in sight with one single spiderbot, and that anything that isn't the Plasma Coil or Bouncer are a waste of time.
t. unfun autist who can't ever have fun

You don't get to be upset by Quest For Booty and Into the Nexus for being short. They were priced accordingly.
You can hate them for other reasons all you want, but it's pretty damn stupid to be mad about something that they lowered the price of the game to represent it.
>>336061684
Telsa barrier is vendor only everything else you can get from crates even the zodiac
>>336061761
How did you get that I was upset from that post? I'm not, I enjoy QfB, but it's just an extended level.
Well fuck
something's gone wrong, because im caught in a loading screen on my way to the maktar nebula
should i just kill myself?
>>336061808
synthenoids are also vendor only
>>336061893
Forgot about them
>>336061893
R&C3 sniper rifle is also vendor only
not sure about R&C2 though
>>336061720
Spiderbots had some utility to them and didn't cost 1 million bolts.
>>336046985
this >>336047095, both hacking puzzles in 2 were pretty great. The first few Electrolyzer puzzles were kinda dull but they got better near the end of the game, and the Infiltrator minigame was short, simple and sweet.
>>336046985
The one from 3.
What was the worst though?
>The fuckin Sixaxis circuit one
>>336032747
The PS4 sold well despite the movie possibly flopping. Due to the director wanting more something on the lines with the Minions instead of the Ratchet and Clank style writing they were originally going with.
>>336062504
>The fuckin Sixaxis circuit one
You can go into the options and change it to use the analog stick instead.
>>336054730
Deadlocked had a good soundtrack. Better than Future
>>336049396
I'm sick of Zurkon.
I want synthetic Qwarks. Starts off like an immobile turret with a Qwark robot that has a spring base, like the one from the Swingshot obstacle course. Gains a robotic wheel like the ones from Qwark's hideout to be able to move. Spits hero catchphrases and advertisements for shoddy Qwark-brand goods.
It's basically an amalgam of the mini-turret, decoy, and agents of doom/dread gloves.
>>336034882
The reason Nefarious didn't work in PS4 is because there was NO FUCKING LAWRENCE!
You can't have Nefarious without Lawrence.
>>336062654
i love everything you described
>>336058593
>played the shit out of the original, greatest hits, and HD version
>Never heard this song
I will always consider Drek's theme to be the regular Veldin 2 music
>>336062178
Bolts are fucking worthless once you hit Challenge Mode. The fuck are you going to spend that million on once you've upgraded everything?
>>336057567
Late reply just to say you have amazing taste, Anon
UYA is so tedious to replay with those battlefield missions and Quark comic levels.
>>336061653
Lookup CreatureBox. The guys who did the RandC art also did art for some tv shows of a similar art style.
>>336057567
>hunter mine launcher
Nobody would play with me on multiplayer because I was that faggot who would dump all mods towards his hunter mine launcher (good ol' magma mod) and shoot some spare ones in random places while charge booting straight into them to kill them instantly.
Only better weapon in that game was the leviathan flail. God damn was that a satisfying weapon to git gud with.
>>336062654
This is the best idea I've seen in a long time.
>>336061319
The Insomniac that you are thinking of has long been forgotten.
