I could see this. Ornstein in Anor Londo was likely a replica that was conjured more than a simple illusion. You only get one soul after the fight, and it's the soul of whichever body is the host at the end. Maybe that Ornstein was crafted from Smough's Soul. Drangelic is a land far away and the stories to first flame and linking the fire and all that carried over there and they started to burn people up too.
When you give fire keeper her eyes she says that far away in the darkness she sees hints of light. That might imply that there are other "copies" of the first fire other places where powerful souls are burnt, like Drangelic.
What I dislike about the Souls serie is that, even though it sorta builds up an atmosphere like a long-ass time has passed, there's no progress in the setting. Catarina is still there, as are Vinheim, Astora... In all that time thoses guys never improved their armor design or their science
Maybe I'm just wrong and only Gwyn had the power to sustain the fire for 1000 years, others just burn at 10-20 years interval. But still.

The prefight was long and annoying and it was running around in circles waiting for a hole when ten fucking enemies lunged at me one at a time in perfect syncs that literally could leave no holes.
Pretty much in any other place in any Dark Souls when it throws too many enemies at you it gives you ways to deal with it.
You ether can pull them carefully one at a time, or you can use the environment to create bottlenecks.
That fight gives you nothing but a large area and deathball of enemies that take way too little damage and of course have infinite poise so you better be sure they are not going to attack when you go in at them.

Untended Graves and dark firelink are possibly from the time when Ludleth linked the fire. If you talk to him he says he willed himself to be a lord of cinder which is why he's so small and weak in comparison to other lords of cinder because everything was possibly dead/he was all there was. Gundyr arrived there as Champion Gundyr was possibly trying to become a lord of cinder but when he arrived at Firelink it had already gone dark and he succumbed to that parasite/humanity thing. When Ludleth came around he either slew Gundyr or you already had done it since time is so unstable and you're visiting the past possibly. Ludleth used Gundyr to judge any unkindled that were resurrected by the first flame to bring the other lords of cinder back to link the fire again (Iudex is judge in latin iirc).

When you first fight Iudex Gundyr you're going back in time to fight him every time you cross the fog. In DaS when you explored the Undead Burg it took you a long while but here every area takes 10 minutes at most to get through IF you explore every path.
It really feels like every area is the same size as Heide's Tower of Flame.

I think that it's more like Death working properly requires Fire. Nito had to consciously keep Death working properly with his soul. When the Flame fades, the distinction between life and death begins to fade, starting with the creatures that are most closely connected with Dark, these being humans, rats, etc.

Most of the Firelink NPC's are unkindled. Sirris, Hawkwood, Yuria, Leonard, Horace and Anri are all unkindled who are trying or have tried to link the fire just like you. How that squares with there being just one Coiled Sword I don't know other than Firelink being a hub, which means that just because you got the coiled sword doesn't mean they didn't in their versions of their reality as the hub is connected to everything.
