For what reason? He doesn't need him to make the engines anymore. Romero was the heart and soul of Doom and Quake and people forget that ultimately Carmack was a genius programmer, but these days he's entirely superfluous.

Carmack is one guy. These days most AAA studios have dozens of people working only on the graphics engine. Carmack is talented as fuck, but he isn't a god. Even in the book Masters of Doom he was talking about how he had pretty much reached the apex of what he was capable of making with Doom 3 and that he was starting to get bored with graphics programming.

These days any schmuck can download the Unreal fucking Engine 4 and make whatever they want to with it. Who needs Carmack?
>>
>>332419963
That's such a hilariously sad simplification of what a brilliant programmer adds to a team that I think I'm going to cry.

Good job, anon.
>>
>>332419839
>Brenda at least creates video games
Honestly I've heard about one single game she's created, which was the Auschwitz simulator, and other than that I have only heard of her either complaining about being called John Romero's wife, or about headlining feminist talks at GDC.

Don't get me wrong, I don't HATE her or anything, I like how she says that prizes for female gamedevs are retarded, but she would be nowhere near where she is now if she weren't fucking John Romero.
>>
>>332420156
Nigger I AM a programmer. A programmer is an advanced toolmaker. A good programmer does not make a fun game and every programmer knows this.
>>
>>332420302
Nigga if that's true, you KNOW how valuable a toolmaker is to a game designer for lots of other purposes than engine programming.

>>332420427
At the end of the day, in 2016, a talented game designer has all of the tools they need already created for them. Engines, art tools, hell even DAWs are either free or cost a couple of hundred bucks.
Obviously a good programmer can make unique and useful custom tools. But it's not NECESSARY, is my point, because so much is already created and ready to use.

I will concede two things, and that is physics and AI. But as far as graphics engines or like 99% of tools go? That shit's already out there, man.

>>
>>332420858
Dude. I think you're seriously underselling yourself as a programmer if you believe that.

And I say that as a graphics/design guy with very little programming skills.
>>
>>332421025
Just look at Team Meat. Ed McMillen has made four games since Super Meat Boy. FOUR. Tommy Refenes has made exactly zero. Because Ed is the game designer and when he needs somebody to program something for him, he can just go out and find another programmer if Tommy is busy.

I mean, I make good money. I work for a Fortune 500 company and I am good at what I do. But when it comes to making games, some guy with a great, interesting idea can fire up Game Maker and create Undertale, and he sure as hell doesn't need me to help him make that. I'm not selling myself short, I'm just saying I'm not necessary anymore to make great games.

So you didn't understand my post focused on "tremie", and you're admitting you "understood" what he was saying by just ignoring the complicated words (which you call "guessing from the context").

Since you're basically saying Carmack's speech is just full of a lot of unecessarily vague expressions, I'm glad you're agreeing with me on that

I would be happy with either, honestly. I remember last year they had this on their twitter and got all excited before I realized the date.

Carmack is using a lot of big words to say something very simple. He is notorious for doing that. Just because I don't understand every word he says doesn't mean I can't grasp the meaning of what he's saying from the context.

Expanding on this, it really annoys me when "smart people" do this. They pretend like what they're talking about are these bizarre, abstract concepts that nobody other than geniuses could possibly understand. Like, I get people like Carmack don't do it intentionally, they're just trying to be precise and that makes them sound like robots, but it still bothers me. Programming is hard in detail, yes, but the concepts themselves are not and can easily be understood by laymen. We need more people like Neil Tyson to dispel these myths that science / programming / whatever are for geniuses only.
>>
>>332429082
>people like Carmack don't do it intentionally
Actually he does - he's just pretentious like that.

This is actually bullshit. Richard Feynman actually talked about this. Sometimes you have to understand the intuitive process of something and not just shitty metaphors you get from people like Tyson because it leaves you with this idea that you "understand" something, when in actuality, you incorrectly are misrepresenting something in your mind because you are trying to understand it in greater terms than what it is composed of, something fundamental.

Not only that, but some things are not "simple" and "easy" to explain. For example, on a high level Shor's Algorithm "finds prime fast by exploiting quantum mechanics," but you don't know jack shit about it after that sentence and any deeper explanation requires me to speak in terms that may not be easy to understand for the laymen.

>>
>>332429707
I don't disagree. But to obfuscate simple ideas through choice of language is the best way to chase normal people away from science, math and programming, and that is BAD.
>>
>>332429082
this
>>332429707

This is right. If you ever did something at least a tiny bit complex you can't just explain it by trivializing it, because it's nowhere like that.

Neil Degrasse explains pretty mundane things if compared to actual applied knowledge.

Here is my thought process:

>throughput of the primary graphics tremie pipeline isn't sufficient
Oh! I know what a pipeline is. Throughput must mean putting stuff through it! So you can't put enough stuff through the graphics pipeline!
>to maintain both an ambi-famulated video stream from the camera
Oh so the camera takes a lot of resources, I can understand that!
>and the associated overhead from the unilateral buffer used for shaders
Oh so there's more overhead with more graphics stuff and that's clogging up the pipeline! So that must mean that using the camera and displaying graphics for AR doesn't work because it's too resource intensive!

It doesn't matter if none of those words exist, in context it still makes sense.

You just fall out of the habit of putting things in simpler terms when you start wanting to be specific more often, and when your confidence in talking about it increases. It's kinda annoying becuase you'll talk like that when it's more productive to say the simple version too.
>>
In my wet dreams Romero takes Ion Storm Austin's best designers and just makes a by the book FPS with them.

But it won't happen and it will probably be a shitshow.

Don't know how someone can say Quake 2 or 3 left a greater legacy than Doom and Quake with a straight face. And they're much worse games compared to Quake 1, both singleplayer and multiplayer, which all have worse single player than Doom.

Yeah, no air-strafe while also adding railgun sure were great changes to the games multiplayer, totally didn't turn it into a railwhoring competition. Just watch CA premade matches to see how awful those two addition to the game are, and watch QW TDM to see how good it is not to have those two things. Ruining the great aesthetic 1 had with strogg shit was a great decision as well. Enemy design in 2 was shit, needed more projectile based ones.
