It was the infamous Arthur Gies review. The one where he spent roughly two thirds of the review talking about the game being sexist, glanced over the gameplay, and gave it a 7.5. Which is still a pretty good score to be fair, but it was the lowest of any major site and pretty much based solely on his sexism complaints rather than anything to do with the game itself.

My personal biggest gripe with Xenoblade was how you had limited inventory space so you always have to sell out items and collectibles, which may or may not be required in a later quest (even though Monado visions some times told you if an item would become quest-relevant, they weren't reliable).
In X you have an infinite inventory, and items can stack up to 99. When you get your 100th of a specific item, it's sold off automatically.
There's also the fact that the game now explicitly tells you what your position is to the enemy (side, back, etc.) so there's no more taking guesses but wiffing a backslash.

They failed because of the games, nothing else. The only games that were system sellers for the Gamecube were Melee and Metroid Prime, but a console can't succeed with only two games that people want. The Dreamcast's system-seller was Sonic Adventure, but it still didn't move enough hardware.
Game consoles are nothing more than boxes that people buy to play games. It's all about the games. If the console doesn't have enough system-selling games, the console flops.
