Typically, when someone gets a lot of notes, or a lot of retweets from something small, it's from the fact that they have been consistently delivering quality content for some time. And so they've amassed a shitload of followers. They didn't just join the internet, and immediately they're famous. Like they're the chosen ones. No, they did something to garner the attention.
Word of mouth comes from the quality of your work. For example: If you and I drew the same subject, in the same pose. One of use is going to do it better than the other. Or perhaps one isn't "better", but one of us has a more appealing style. And in the end, you and I will attract different amounts of people. As a result of the variable quality between our works.
And you know what? Maybe you have 5,000 followers. And I have 500 followers. You get 1,000 notes. And I get 200 notes.
Even though your picture got 5x more notes than me. My image appealed to 40% of my followers. While your image appealed to 20% of your followers. Because you shirked quality. While I worked more diligently on my piece.

True enough, if you're given the spotlight by someone with a big audience, you or your work will also garner considerable attention. If you're getting single digit notes on your drawings, then that should tell you something.
1. It should tell you to tag your fucking posts, moron.
2. More importantly, it should tell you that people are not appreciating the quality of your work, as much as many other artists. And, you can try and pander by doing popular material. Or pander by doing niche fetish material. But that would only be inflating your e-peen by superficial means.
Of course, when I put out fanwork, it tends to get more notes than my OC. But still, my OC gets respectable numbers in comparison. The reason I think that is, is because people appreciate the work I put into each piece. And the ounce of creativity I add to it. I try to make my OC something substantial, and not completely self-indulgent. It's not simply what *I* think is cool. But it's something that I worked hard to appeal to others, so they see what's cool about it too.

1.I do tag my shit correctly, always make sure to get right the name of the characters, always drawing stuff I don't know anything about and whatnot.
2. Does it really? As I said before there are many things that play a role on this. Not just people not appreciating your work. Most of the hits I get are from people who don't follow me. I don't know how that even works but that's how it is. Funny enough most hits I get from followers are from other drawfriends. I would say the do have certain qualities to appreciate other people's work, and surprise surprise, those are the hits I actually care about.
I do lean to certain fandoms, who doesn't? But I never pander to them. Why would I? I know that's as superficial as it gets.
As for OCs I rarely follow people doing OCs so I wouldn't know how that works, really.

You shouldn't diminish the factor of notes to such a degree. They can and do work as an indication for where your art is. If you look at the artists who get showered with notes, then you will notice that they are in an upper league. Save for the exceptions like Shadman. But for the most part, you will see a consistent display of high quality material. Great artists aren't getting single digit notes, no matter how tame or obscure their subject matter is.
The people you don't know, have their own value. Because they're the people that are critiquing the quality of your work alone. Whereas, the people who you are familiar with, they're critiquing the work along with the context of which it was drawn, and the social thread they have with you. So even though the people you know are likely respectable peers, they note is still no more valuable than a random person's note. It's only a different perspective. I value the fact that random people see my work and appreciate it. Because that means the quality of the work has helped carry that piece to new appreciative eyes.

Your lighting is very hard while the shadows are very soft (in most areas anywhere, I can see where the shadows aren't so soft around the right hair strands). Get a bit more adventurous with the shadows and don't be afraid to make them a little darker.
Also be sure to vary your lineweight. Make the lines a bit thicker in shaded areas, such as under the chin.
Other than that I think it looks pretty good anon. Keep on keepin' on.

If you don't feel like learning to paint it the hard way it's really easy to just drag it a bit at the edges of highlight and shadows with smudge tool to get that feel to it.

Not the artist, but that doesn't look too bad and sometimes getting too detailed atually looks worse, depending on how you go about it. You really don't need to try and render every individual hair; just do enough to give off the suggestion of fur.

Try it out. I did that with photoshop 80% hard smudge tool literally in less than a minute.
I like the tool because blending stuff like that is nice in traditional medium but when painting digitally everything but round brush feels like cheating when trying to learn.

Yeah it would require to like do the smudging on duplicates of the layers and then it's pretty much a branching patch on which all your work later on would be based on so it wouldn't be quite as simple to change stuff. But anyways it's good to have an arsenal of tricks and try and implement them in a way that will suit your needs. And the crux of the matter was the achieved look not just the way.
