The only part thats like monster hunter are some of the online quests. The combat is basically kind of like an MMO. You spam abilites and junk and wait for cooldowns mostly. Characters autoattack on their own. I know that sounds kind of shitty but I had fun with it in the first game. Download the Wii game and play it to see if you'll like it.

I just beat Egil last night and then the game MGS4'd me with cutscenes. I thought I was close to the end but I guess not.

I find I don't need heals at all anymore, chain attack healing is plenty. I sometimes have to pull in Shulk for his shield nonsense but then sometimes I kill things so fast that they don't get to use their super moves anyways. It's hilarious to me that as a little girl I can just dropkick these giant robots and topple them at will.

Considering I'm using a $5 flash drive to load up the data, I'm not certain I care for the flash drive to begin with since it's a minor cost for the use.

Xenoblade X chose the hard mode on all the elements of the game. Listen to the music. It will shock you at the beginning: the first fight will be rythmed with a flow of rap. Not the Wu Tang Clan nor the NTM (french rap band) kind of rap. Imagine the kind of rap that you can listen in anime openings. It's after multiple ingame songs that we understand that those songs are the core of the OST. The tracks are adapted to the situations, sometimes epic, sometimes nervous, and sometimes they stay quiet. In town, the «hey hey han han» hip hop has a slower tempo at night.
A restaurant serving all the dishes because «it's in the menu» will fail some of them. The music in XCX is some sort of basterd mix of Evanescence, Linkin Park, Hatsune Miku and Osaka beatboxers. There is one certitude: it's the most courageous, insane OST you will ever heard. There is at least a track that you will hate. Those who have watched Attack on Titan and Kill la Kill are used to the energetic work of Hiroyuki Sawano. Advertisers would call it «dividing» or «cleaving», psychanalists would call it «suicidal». But wether we like it or not, when the singers shut their mouths, the melodies are great.

It was pretty nice, although after a certain point all of the uniqueness of the plot and setting kind of vanishes in favor of your standard JRPG plot. Also I got cockblocked right at the second form of the final boss, when I thought that it was about to end, so I had to go back and grind a couple of levels.

What. The reality is the exact opposite. There's always a ton of shit skills and classes in RPGs, especially adaptations of PnP systems, and it's not even rare to have skills that never get checked a single time, whereas in PnP sessions the GM can just conjure up situations on the fly where a given stat check can be used.
In either case that's a failure of the GM or the designer. A good designer or GM (basically the same thing really) will have good representation for all choices. They don't have to be equal, as in 5 ways to get the same good result, but still be represented.

I feel like this game will feel like a disappointing grind after 6 hours in and we all will begin to hate the repetitive content and lack of classes.
Remember that in Xenoblade Original you could change the AI of your allies and even control them at any point in the game.
In Xenoblade X it seems like all you can change is the "shouts" of the allies and their gear, meaning the X-timing is all you can change.
So ultimately the combat is shallow "spam abilities when they are off cooldown or on two-cooldown" and wait for X prompts......
