I'm trying to learn DoA5LR seriously on PS3 right now and I'm having a bit of a hard time getting used to it. I'm generally a 2D fighter kind of guy but played a lot of DoA1 and 2 as a kid. Mainly just wondering where you usually default to for defense. Like in street fighter when you're on the defense you usually are crouch blocking then just react to overheads, jump attacks or throws. But in DoA there are a lot more ways to blow up your defense. Then you have holds on top of all that. So I'm getting fucking owned just getting slammed with attacks left and right.

Holds should be what you're focusing on most of the time. The second an opponent catches wind that you're just going to turtle then they'll use any number of unblockable moves available to them to fuck you in the ass.
Gonna have to learn how each character plays to properly counter since many of them have fake out moves for the very purpose of getting around holds.

I have the same trouble as you, mostly a 2D player and having trouble understanding 3D fighters. But I've come to default to guard high. Because most big combos seems to come from high hits. Low hits are either fast but don't combo as well, or knockdown but are slow enough to react to. It's easier if you fight the same player/character repeatedly tough, since you come to understand what their strings are and after a while you know when a low or high can come out.

Alright that makes sense, the hold system right now is just way over my head. There are just a lot of moves and the animations aren't the best right now telling what's what in like 15 frames or whatever the average move speed is.
And when it comes to comboing again I'm used to the 2D mindset where if you hit the button too fast nothing comes out, hit it too slow and they block it. But in DoA that shit's coming out and the full thing might connect or might just do a few hits or nothing at all. During the tutorial mode that first weight training took me like half a hour cause I couldn't figure out if I was pressing that last 6P+K too fast or too slow.

If it's a string then you can just input it all at once and it'll all come out. For exemple, Kasumi has a PPPPP string. You can just mash P five times, even if the animation of the first punch isn't even done by the time you've pressed it five times, the next four punches will come out. You only need to time the button presses when it's a link instead of a string.

Well maybe it's just me but I always find grapplers simple to use. And Helena only has one stance so it's simple to use.
