...On one hand, this means they aren't going to simply rush it out the door. There likely won't be much cut content at all. In fact, it might be exponentially bigger than FFVII PSX.
...On the other hand, this means they might charge us full price for, say, 3 parts of a game rather than 3 separate games that make up a retelling of FFVII's story.
...I'm apprehensive but I'd like to say I see the potential benefits. This news could mean about a million different things. Bigger story? Segmented story? Each continent is it's own world map? No world map at all? Branching story paths based on your choices with various consequences (I.E. more than simply Aerith might die if you fuck up, or Aerith might be saved at some dire cost down the line in future events, etc.)

You're paying 180 bucks for all of FF7. Enjoy the ride.
One thing it absolutely means is that "old" content and areas will only be relevant for the section of the game they appear in. You are not going back to Kalm or other small towns to do sidequests at the end of the game. Only the really important places will still be accessible in the final game.

There is no reason why we can't have a modern FF game with this style overworld. We still get this style overworld in games like Tales and DQ, plus a bunch of smaller JRPG franchises.
But it isn't realistic! You don't see all the monsters on the overworld! Cloud is like 1/2 the size of that one building!

Not sure about Tales, but DQ keeps the OW because of the "sticking to tradition" shit or whatever it has going on in the series.
FF is constantly changing its ways so I doubt they'll keep many elements from older RPGs in later titles.

I think OKW's a simpler faction than Ostheer, to be honest. Ostheer just has the benefit of playing somewhat similarly to their predecessor in CoH1.
