Points when their's no leaderboard
Game overs that force the player into the main menu instead of just restarting the level or going to the last save load
Checkpoints BEFORE a cutscene
"Are you sure?" popups when quitting the game
The first button on the main menu is "new game" instead of "continue"
The characters saying something every minute (Gears of War, lots of fighting games)
Weapons that degrade and need to be repaired
Unskippable cutscenes
Quick time events
Being overpowered in game then losing too easily in a cutscene
No button mapping option
Enemies/bosses that are just bullet sponges.

For a couple years before the whole industry became too bloated to function, it was the go-to platform for Western developers looking to make an innovative game, thanks to a control scheme with much better precision than consoles have and the ability to constantly push forward technologically. Add in modding communities that can radically alter a game experience, something that doesn't exist on consoles, and a relative ease of access that made it the single go-to platform for smaller and independent developers before phones became so widespread and still capable of producing hits in that regard, also something that the more restricted consoles lack, and you have the machine where Western developers contributed the most to the medium.
Now if PC devs could only master aesthetics other than "drab gray-brown realism" and "hipster imitation of children's storybook", consoles would really be obsolete.

It gets much better once you hit chapter 3, but also when you acclimate to the game's slow pacing. The game doesn't throw action and excitement at you constantly to entertain you, you just have to slow down since it's a very personal story where the world doesn't revolve around you.
