There have been styles of combat with a heavy emphasis on the way you draw your weapon and going straight into a strikes (which made a lot of sense, since real fights were often over in a fraction of the time you see even in most "realistic" movies and shows), which has ultimately been twisted into this romantic ideal of sheathing and drawing again mid-combat.
Sure, it's dumb, but it's far more entertaining than the real thing, which is why it's done like that, though there is such a thing as taking it too far.

Which was least worst, Maw of Chaos or Soulforge?
I wish we'd see a stealth game like Thief Gold and 2 again. I loved sneaking around in old crypts and castles. Funny enough the closest experience to that for me was an adult module for Neverwinter Nights.
I don't think Soulforge was bad. So I'm going with Maw of Chaos because Thief 1 had far too many fucking missions with forced combat.

Fun ending level desu I enjoyed it. Also Soulforge was absolutely huge and labrynthine as fuck and I enjoyed that too. I love being able to actually get lost in a game.

It gets a bit better, but still not very interesting because dark souls combat is good, but just a bit too simple to be interesting.
