I tried running it on a Radeon 8750HD and it's barely playable on 720p onwards.

The lighting effects are the biggest FPS drag, from what I've seen

Indie devs saving gaming
Were video games hard because the people who made them played them so much, they got good, and upped the difficulty?

This was true but for arcade games.
Gen 3 games were hard because they were generally very short. Without the high difficulty, they wouldn't last much.

How is the port of FFIX? Are the graphics any better than what you can get emulating?
Main cast and FMVs are better, everything else clashes horribly.
It looks great to me. Backgrounds don't bother me that much, I'm grateful they put out an upgraded version on steam
It's better than emulating the original. Has only minor drawbacks like the UI being a bit big in battles. Worth a buy at least to show Square their old games still make dollerydoos.

Just finished the tutorial! Any idea what to do next to learn the game?
Play either Broken Lords or Wild Walkers on an easy difficulty. Broken Lords are more overpowered in the late game, but they start a bit sluggish. You don't have to worry about foot with them, but this might give you some bad habits. Wild Walkers are the least gimmicky and simple of all factions and pretty strong in general.
Play wild walkers on the lowest difficulty, do whatever, then move on to higher difficulties. Vaulters, wild walkers and drakken are the easiest to play.

I'll start with Katana Zero
Looks cool, but all these 2D indie games with combat gimmicks have ONLY gimmicks. They never have a good story, good music, or good level design. Some idea-guy had a neat idea, made a game around that idea, and forgot about adding anything of substance/value.
Indie games like that are why the games that do do it right (Meat Boy, Shovel Knight, Axiom Verge, etc) are hailed as "amazing" when they're really just solid games that had a lot of planning and thought put into them, not a paper-thin pseudo-tech demo.
