This place is too spoopy, man. Is there any good loot in the area or can I just run straight to the boss like I have been doing? The second bonfire doesn't seem to be there now either, which is a bit annoying.
Also, where does this area fit into the lore? Gundyr isn't impaled in this one, and it's basically just the Cemetery of Ash but dark. Alternate reality? Illusion? Past/future?

I figured it was in the past, mainly because of Gundyr and the fact he's much stronger in this one and isn't impaled on a sword. Like, an Ashen One before you already beat him before you got there (At the start of the game), hence he's got a sword stuck through his chest and when you fight him he's infected with thing which makes you go full flailing monster mode.

I feel the maps are the biggest offender though. They are incredibly uninspired. Every map in Gears 1/2/3 took place somewhere. There was sense in it's design. These maps feel more like paintball courses with different tilesets.

Start by not starving
play a custom setup, only fall or spring since those are the easiest seasons. Use the wiki a lot since most of the things you won't ever find out on your own. Never stop collecting wood and gathering food. Feeding a pig 4 monster meat turns it into a werepig that drops 2 good meat pieces and a pig skin which is useful

Is there a single modern game that W. Americans are the best at?
I'm pretty sure Quake was the last game in which a W. American held the title of #1 for a short period of time. Quake is arguably one of the most skillful competitive games ever so we can give Americans an iota of credit for that, but certainly this does not apply to any other game.

I'm wondering what /v/'s opinion is on "inclusion".
From a certain crowd I keep hearing how major alterations are good just because they'll introduce it to new people. Examples like

The response from this crowd is always "why do you care if the devs let another person do X?" That ultimately the best thing a game can do is bend itself to the player's will as much as possible.
I have a great feeling that this is utter bullshit but I'm unable to put it into a strong argument. Am I bonkers or just missing something?

I guess I wasn't clear: I wasn't saying from a crowd "here", I just meant from a crowd of the gaming audience.
Secondly, that was just an example from my own experience; I'm playing it myself now, felt I made a small mistake and found threads of people on the GD forums whining about how expensive it is to respec 100's of levels dozens of times.
But what I'm talking about is not how stupid their wishes are, it's the excuse they give of "Why do you care what I do in my game?" I feel like that's a weak defense and non-existent argument for their stupid wishes, but I was wondering what others thought.

It will probably be similar to Transistor in regards to how Transistor was similar to Bastion
The devs will probably stick to they're strong at: art, music, narration while trying something different with gameplay. And they will probably try their hand at more world building and character development, since they kind of got their feet wet with it in Transitor, but we were stuck reading just about all of it rather than people/things develop in time around your character.
