What's the best approach for someone's first time playing DeS on a melee build? I've played all the other soulsborne games but it's less forgiving in the sense I don't just get to replenish estus each time I die. I cleared phalanx no problem and am on 2-1 now just wondering if I should have accessed one of the other areas before going here.

5-1 and 3-1 are pretty easy, start with those if you're having trouble with the others.

There is no real best approach, because some characters have an easier time in some areas than others. Though you can do 2-1, then 3-1 etc. so you know what those worlds are about.
If you had to pick one hero from each role and only play that, who would it be? Post list and hate on others. Bonus points for trying to back up your picks with conjecture evidence and anecdotes.

because you don't do anything. It's impossible to be bad with him but I've seen some lucio's that just blew me the fuck away. They know exactly when to speed boost so we can push super hard and exactly when to heal. They always have the ultimate in the most clutch moments and I played with this one guy who fucking PUSHED junkrats tire away from the team which basically would've lost us the game
