going auto full auto when you're actually trying to hit something and not suppressing is all kinds of dumb.
You'll be wasting bullets like crazy, you won't be able to aim for shit because of recoil, your gun(depending on how many bullets can it take a time) will overheat like a bitch.
Even machine-gunners won't be going full auto most of the time, usually they deal with bursts.

It IS garbage compared to Chrono Trigger, but so are 99% of all video games ever made. It's still pretty damn good compared to other games on the PS1. It just needed some more time in the oven, or maybe less "idea guys" working on it and bloating the game with a convoluted story and needless concepts. It's similar to Xenogears in that way, but is less blatantly unfinished.
The combat also needed to be re-worked. The system itself was fine, but with the way leveling worked, you had no incentive to actually fight anything, nor any incentive to use the vast majority of the characters they dump on you.
