There are no mods that fix vanilla questlines and melee won't be too great no matter what you do. Ranged combat and survival elements are doable though. There are some good added quests too.

The developers of Rust have not implemented any features for showing mercy, camaraderie, or friendship between a player who has, and a player who has-not. Players in Rust have little more to do than create a large base, use this base a means of securing and defending their resources, and attacking and taking from weaker players in an effort to make their own base stronger, be it through stolen resources, or simply by eliminating a competitor.
