There are no mods that fix vanilla questlines and melee won't be too great no matter what you do. Ranged combat and survival elements are doable though. There are some good added quests too.

Even for stealth archers it's good to have a combat mod, you're going to get attacked by all kinds of things after all. I have a fondness for Ultimate Combat with Revenge of the Enemies..
