It's a good jrpg with a decent plot, well defined characters, a romantic subplot that actually goes somewhere, fuckton of content and decent gameplay.

If you are trying to play it now of course it's not going to have the same magic.
Speaking just for myself:
- playable demo with Parasite Eve, play through it a couple of times because PE was short as hell
- no idea what the intro's about but OK
- battle system is kind of neat, soundtrack's very good, characters seem mostly charming
- demo ends right as something seems ready to happen
- buy full game, play to that point
-almost everyone fucking dies in the next moment
That really surprised me, and motivated me to keep on the game even when it dragged (like the whole prison episode).

I would call FFXIV before the reboot a bigger blunder.
The game flopped so hard the company had to publicly apologize to everyone who bought the game and suspend the sub fee, Hiromichi Tanaka had to resign, and they dropped a nuke on the game and did a total remake from the entire game client to the server infrastructure which supports the game. FFXIV was the prime reason why FFXV was delayed for years.
