That said, if you go back and reread the first two books, GRRM goes out of his way to make sure you realize early on that Theon, while he gets along fine with the Stark kids, is not himself a Stark. Not just in name, but in who he is as an individual. It's fairly evident from the very first scene that GRRM is setting Theon up for a double cross. He deliberately paints him as a bit of a dick, using terms like "sneering" and having him antagonize Jon Snow for no reason. He may live with the Starks, but he does not share their values. Yes, he will later come to regret that, but that doesn't change who he was.
